This has actually been my default setting for a good month now I reckon. Santa Maria really solidified it as the place to be on weekends.

For some reason watching the Beagles is less stressful and less disappointing than watching the actual AFL team.
One can't help but let out a fatherly chuckle watching Harry Barnett gallop about like a newborn giraffe.

Barnett, the commentary teams quips and total inaccuracy when calling players names, the umpiring standard being arguably worse than the AFLW, the camera shaking and occasionally panning to the wrong spot missing entire plays, some of the things the microphone picks up in the crowd 🎤...

No shortage of chuckles when watching the Beagles, that's for true.

Now let’s hope he doesn’t get sacked.

All these fast playing players but still can’t win a clearance or tackle the opposition mids in there. (Or win a hit out)

Midfield is where the game is won and we are so far behind in that position.

You have to back in the scouts until they are proven right or wrong.

The Newton pick is a little weird. Already ruled out for this week so you’d think they are planning 18months on the list unless he’s a total bust. I would’ve guessed no forwards in this draft.

Imo they have to go find a mature ruck, mid and 2x KPD if Gov is done.

Likely 3 first round picks plus upto 4 NGA/FS picks. Those list spots are going to be tight imo unless they know some players are already likely out at the end of the season.

He’s not getting sacked and you just pick best available talent unless contending and filling a short term need in the MSD. Our draft hand is strong again and that’s the way you get your inside gun in

We have got a serious number of Karens or moaning Myrtles on this board.

I actually like the picks today and believe they address a need on our list.

FFS - I have had to work hard and finally managed to get rid of Colin and Colin esq posters and now we have a bunch of Karens venting!

Newton is a forward who can play serious midfield minutes and missed a very deep draft due to injury in his draft year. Why would we have a bunch of Karens worried while their petticoats are igniting.

It might not be perfect but I stay tuned for those magical days like when Burgiel kicked four. Santa Maria that was special

Lecca was 6ft. In the modern game cousins/masto are considered midget’s especially in the midfield where there’s mids taller than some of the KPP’s in the 2000’s
People tend to focus on the Cripps/Bont/Fyfe types who approach 2m yet can run like gazelles, but here are a few other names to ponder:

-Libba: 1.84m
-Rowell: 1.80m
-Serong: 1.80m
-NDaicos: 1.84m
-Butters: 1.81m
-Neale: 1.77m
-Merrett: 1.79m

By no means am I suggesting that anybody who was just drafted fits in this elite group, but the point is that while you aren’t going to get a midfielder who can accumulate 30+ touches and also take some speccies and kick a goal most weeks from the height around 1.80m, there’s no reason that a “short” footballer can’t address one of the club’s biggest weaknesses (winning clearances and routinely getting belted in possessions). They just need to have the instincts and toughness to win the ball in contests and enough of a tank to run into open spaces to get their hands on the ball regularly.

Didn’t say anything about him making it or not. Just stating that those heights in modern footy are considered midget territory. That said it’s a bit like early 190cm KPP with shortish players, it’s not impossible for them to make the grade but it makes it harder for them to succeed and basically have to have a couple of points of differences.

Also I don’t think think 184cm is in the midget category really either

Ok campaigners, which one of you is actually Gaz 🔥

Has Thorney finally flipped with Petch not getting a game?

I'm more concerned that Michael Gregory James isn't leaving any first names for the rest of us, the selfish campaigner.

4cm is not that big a difference (at least that’s what I tell my partner, hey-oooooooo) and even if you want to consider just 1.77 to 1.80m that gives you 9x All Australian and 2x Brownlow Medal in Neale, Merrett and Serong.

I also don’t think that height matters all that much in midfielders, not like KPP. In some ways the short guys have some advantage in winning ground balls and working their way out of congestion.

I thought briztoon had gone quiet.

Is he gone?

I'm happy with McCarthy. Real point of difference from anything we have atm & the combination of absolute top-end pace & the ability to kick it ok is hard to bypass. Sellwood would've probably also been a good long term investment, & to draft him on the same day as Adam Selwood's funeral would've been poignant, but you can't have everyone.
Re Newton, have no issue with this pick either. No doubt we considered tall defenders but they obviously thought nobody was up to it. Newton seems to have better attibutes than Long, someone he's likely competing with.

I don't really get why people complain we didn't draft a mid.
Sure we might get extremely lucky & snag a Newcombe or even durham, but to make it as a mid in the AFL you've got to match it with the best of the best. Chances of finding this in mid season draft are low. I think there's a better chance of finding an AFL quality flanker/pocket who can be more of a role player.
Also, do we want to be prioritising a mid with probably limited upside for valuable AFL level mid rotations over the other youth we want to go through there.....Gross, Hewett, Reid, Hough, even Hutch?
We do need some more senior bodies in the midfield but I'd prefer to target a Phillips, Sheldrick etc in off-season (not dev though sorry)
