Just an update on Ralphys article. He
was just on Mid Week Tackle, said the idea of contracts have to hit $1m a year to trigger band 1 is wrong.

Battle left for Hawks on roughly $800k guaranteed a year and that triggered band 1. Lions ain’t fussed about his form and injury history, they believe his they can turn both around.

If it’s Achilles damage, that’s the year done for Oscar. You can take that to the bank.

If it is his last game for us, thanks for your service and good luck in your future Oscar.

Hoping we hand jobe a debut next game.
I see what u did there 😉

Agreed.

Nah, that isn't free agency. That's just trade week. Agreed the players want want want and never give anything back in return. The AFL are weak as piss when it comes to dealing with the AFLPA.

If I was the AFL I would be happy to expand free agency. But in exchange the players have to make some concessions.

What you need is a system where restricted free agency is, I dunno, restricted.

Oscar Allen is out of contract at the end of this season. WC should have been able to offer him an extension last season, and he should be eligible to field offers once this season finishes. If we offer him4 years x $500k that sets his value to our team. If Brisbane turn up and offer 6 years x $900k then good for them but why do we deserve pick 2 on that basis? What should happen is that we hold the right to match those terms and keep him should we want to.

But the AFLPA don't want that. They don't want any negative aspect of US sports creeping in, only the good bits.
I don't think a club should be able to get a quality player that another club has invested a draft pick and years of development in for free just by offering him $1 more than his current club has offered.

The simplest way of doing it is to make a rule that only half a players salary counts in the cap if it is a player you drafted. That would weight things heavily in favour of the club that developed the player.

If you take Oscars name away and just analsye what that player has done this year, end of 1st round compo is a a steal.

Do not match Brisbane's offer under any circumstance.

Still want pick 2 though.

Do you think there might be more to a player’s value than just their most recent season?

Do you think Geelong got ripped off trading pick 17 for Bailey Smith?

How long since Oscar played well , consistently?. I have a terrible memory

He played every game and kicked 53 goals in a wooden spoon side in 2023?

That’s a poor way to negotiate.

Joe Daniher hardly played for 3 years. It’s career trajectory is nearly the same as Oscars right now.

The Bombers still got band 1.

This is what people forget.

People also forget we aren’t getting pick 2 for Oscar. That’s not what this is

We’re getting an after first natural first round draft pick for Oscar

That just happens to be pick 2.

So many people forget this as part of the formula, man. It’s so basic and yet some people cannot grasp it

Tom Morris is reporting that Lions deal is 6 years by about 750-800k.

Watch and see if that is enough for band 1 compo.

It would put us in a difficult position if we are forced to decide between pick 19 and matching a 6 year offer.

If we match, dare I say Oscar would accept and stay.
Reporters constantly get this sh1t wrong though.

This is not how the FA compensation formula works.

It’s not the total value of the deal, it’s the average amount per year guaranteed with longer deals attracting additional points towards compensation up to 5 years.

The 6th year of Oscar’s supposed deal with Brisbane does not add any weight to the FA banding.

And Mckay’s contract was weighted against contracts in 2023. Two years later and a new CBA means the top 5% threshold required for band 1 compensation is higher than for McKay.

No idea what the contract value for Oscar is, but I don’t think a deal 750-800k will trigger band 1.

If that is the contract the AFL could override compensation if they chose to.
If Collingwood can pony up enough to make Perryman band 1, who is middle of the road player they don’t really need, then I’m pretty sure Lions can reach band 1 for someone like Allen

I’m slightly worried about us being linked to all these players on the outer - don’t want us to turn into Freo circa 2016-2020 where they seemed to get every WA boy on the outer each year (Kersten, acres, conca, colyer etc) who were all good enough players to make the best 22 but didn’t necessarily improve them a helluva lot.

Both Freo and Sydney have been genuinely crying out for a genuine ball winning midfielder this year and yet both Sheldrick and Erasmus still find themselves on the outer.

I understand we were very keen on them both pre draft which can cloud our thinking somewhat. But I think there comes a point where you see them for exposed form at the level. I like them both, honestly, nothing against either- both would walk into our 22 tomorrow. But genuinely, in 2-3 years will they find themselves in the same boat, being pushed out?

It’s not good, but also a little deceptive.
With 18 teams and we are clearly the worst, it puts Ryan, Cole and Cripps around our top 10.
Oscar I’d argue hasn’t been fit for a big chunk of the year
Duggan is a try’s but his dump kicks just hurt us constantly
Kelly, yeah can’t argue, he has just been shit
Duggan's shit comment that the young players have to learn how to stop a teams momentum is an absolute joke coming from someone who gave up the chase after a ball when there wasn't anyone near him.
What a great example as captain he sets for the young players. He sucks and should be delisted at the end of the season as he is a totally useless dump kicker that adds no value or leadership at all to the team.

What's the latest on Hawthorn and Sydney re Oscar? Both need Oscar more than Brisbane do.

Not sure Sydney were ever in the game, don't think Hawks have actually walked away, they just weren't top of the list.

Sure, and reporting from Ralphy to calm tbe farm on compensation.

But the 750-800 figure from Morris was absolutely a concern. I don’t think 750 gets it done.

Anyway, sounds like Morris figures are very much on the low end.

They need to get rid of the current free agency system altogether IMO.

The club receiving the player needs to pay something for the player and the club losing the player is entitled to receive something back. The players will scream because they want a free agency system that allows them to just go wherever they want.

But i think you could design a system that allows players to get to where they want to get to the majority of the time even if they don't have the right to just pick up and leave. Clubs don't want to hang on to players who want to go, they just want to get something back.
Gotta say I don't often agree with your takes but I'm all about this one. I just think it is insane that the rest of the competition pays the price for one team to get a player of their choice without costing them a cent in trade capital.

Meh, we have a make shift afl midfield, and WAFL top ups playing midfield roles in the WAFL, and that’s with only two mids on the injury list (Yeo and Sheed).

We need to increase both talent and depth in midfield.

At the very worst, Erasmus will be a 30d+ Simpson medallist who can help the beagles.

At best he could be a Ned Long type pick up.

I disagree that Freo have need for a big mid. The 3 games when Freo played him as a genuine mid he was gettkng around 19D 4 clearances.

It’s an obvious choice for us.

The Lions key forwards are Eric Hipwood and Logan Morris (who is 191cm), they are in the premiership window the next 4 - 5 years, of course they need to take a risk on someone like Allen who they can add for "free".

If we were in same situation i'd keep Allen, we aren't, so we can't.
