Ok. 100% discussion in good faith here.
There’s no threat from Brisbane to reduce Allen’s offer. Our offer has been the same from day one to Allen.

Nor would Brisbane match your offer to Starcevich if you lodged it. Our list manager has made it very clear that we will not pay that type of money for Starcevich. We have a strict wage structure in place, where pretty much every player on our list has take “unders” for us to remain competitive.

Brisbane’s concern is if we lodge the Allen paperwork first, West Coast can the turn around, wait for the compensation to be granted, then say, “we are only going to offer pick 37 for Starcevich, it’s take it or we walk him to the PSD”.

So our actions are trying to guard against the very scenario quite a few here have said is exactly what they wish your club would do.

The one concern I have, is that our offer to Allen is similar to contracts that have triggered Band 2 compensation this trade period, so we are reliant on the AFL massaging your compensation up to Band 1.

You can jump over to the Lions list management thread and read what I’ve posted there, and you’ll see I don’t take a “side” in these types of discussions. I look at every club and trade through, what I believe is, a pragmatic view.
I agree with the fact that there is no threat from Brisbane to amend Oscar's offer as I would say we would hear rumors in the media from Oscars management that his contract is being based on a negotiation outcome of a separate deal in Starcevich. I am sure the AFLPA would also be on top of that.

What you say about strict wage structure would be common with most contending teams. However, if Brisbane has offered terms under the threshold of Band 1 compensation it seems the AFL has used its authority to increase the compensation with the media mentioning the Eagles getting pick 2 including Twomey the AFL's mouthpiece.
With the Eagles being so bad for the last five years I would say this is a part of the Eagles assistance package.

Clarke has stated that the Eagles view both transactions as separate deals.

The delay in lodging Oscar's free agency paperwork by Brisbane is just posturing.

So, by Friday before the free agency period ends and Brisbane do lodge the paperwork for Oscar it will be interesting to see if the AFL are true to what their media team and others like Duffield have been stating.

If the Eagles do get pick 2, they seem to want to trade up and as the Hawks showed last year with Barrass amidst player negotiations if another deal or opportunity presented is deemed a higher value you take it.

I think the Starcevich trade gets done for one of the early picks in the twenty's either the end of first round compensation or the eagles first pick of the second round.

Lions are aware Allen’s contract is not big enough to warrant pick 2. That’s could be why they haven’t lodged it yet. They probably want to get Hawks R1 or our PP for Starcevich before we find out what Allen’s compo would be. We don’t have to trade for Starcevich if we don’t get pick 2 for Allen, do we?

With Reidy now finding his way to Carlton, I’m once again thumping the table for Pittonet to make his way to WCE as a cheap stop gap. Can guarantee you best 22 footy the rest of the way, bridges the gap until Reid or whoever else is ready.

Would be getting in his ear given he’s been trapped behind TDK and as soon as the air clears up again they go and trade for a younger ruck.
Pittonett is way better than Reidy .

Reidy is cheap backup

Why would carlton lose both their rucks in one off season

If we match band 2 for allen we can bid on starcivich as a free agent but Brisbane could also potentially match .

They have till Friday to lodge the paperwork. I am certain Brisbane will be asking before they lodge it will it trigger Band 1.

The AFL knows we need all the help we can get and this is the perfect way to provide it to us without clubs jumping up and down complaining.

As others have mentioned it's already been accepted we will get band 1 so i can't see why the AFL wouldn't massage it over the line.

It's good for us and them that it happens however under no circumstances should a trade for Starcevich be done before the paperwork is lodged. Agree to terms and once Band 1 is assured finalize the trade.

One theory on our board is that West Coast’s list manager asked us to start at pick 16, so that when we settle on the compo pick, West Coast fans feel like they got a “win” over the Lions.
Hmmmm, that doesn't really sound plausible at all. Seems comical.

We aren’t forcing a trade.

West Coast “need” to trade for Starcevich so as not to dilute the Oscar Allen compensation.

Brisbane are using this situation to our advantage to increase our points pool this draft (and in next year’s draft).

West Coast made their first offer, and we made a counter offer.

Neither club is being a d!ck, both clubs are trying to get the best deal for their club.

List managers would need to appear to their club members and employer as hard core poker player type even for their own credential . Posturing is all part and parcel of the job like peacocks mating dance is important to the peahens .

Guys, it's all posturing and opening positions.

Brisbane would accept the compo pick or our second rounder, they know we want to give the Hawks second, so they say they want 16, in the hope that we drop and offer what they want, and they move up from 16.

The PP or our 2nd is too much for Starc 8n any case.

Sounds like we "tabled" one of them it seems.

If Pittonet thinks he's going to lose his job to Reidy he should probably give the game up.

Agreed, he’s way better than Reidy. Just thinking if we were ever going to try and poach a player in an underhanded way, he’s the type given he’d ultimately be cheap, and we could guarantee him footy while the club who has stuffed him around is bringing in more competition for his spot.

Reality is we need to address our rucks with some sort of cheap stop gap at least, and there are very few on offer.

Clarke said yesterday pick 23 is around the mark and Twomey has said 23 has been "tabled"

Indicates to me its been offered. Why are you saying it hasn't?

If he did then we just dropped our pants and touched our toes.......again.

So are we saying we opened our offer with 23 instead of 37?

And they open with 16.

We need better negotiators if that is true.

That’s not entirely true again. Both clubs need to trade for Starc. The Lions get nothing for Starc due to Draper joining as a FA already. The Eagles don’t want to dilute the compensation for Allen if it’s band one.

Both clubs “need” to trade.

No idea.

Why didn’t West Coast offer the compensation pick in the initial negotiations?

It should be an easy trade.

But both clubs are posturing for what ever reason.
We offered our second rounder you say, is pick 23. Our PP will be 22. You're going to use the pick to bid on Annable and the point difference is 30.

But the point difference to pick 16 is about 250 points.

Don't try and convince us you haven't tried to screw the pooch by demanding 16. This isn't about middle ground BC middle ground on points would be pick 19, but we don't hold it, you do. So whatcha gonna do?

Pick 19 22 43 46 52 still only tally 1842 points, which is a bid at pick 4. But pick 16 for the extra 250 points gets you to a bid at pick 2.

Brisbane can **** off. Our second rounder is adequate.but take the PP and be happy.

Parking the Allen stuff for a moment...

If you could choose between trading up for GC first pick or trading down to grab Bombers first two picks, which are you choosing?

The former for me. Duursma, Sharp and a slider, even if it's CDT. Think if we put that pairing together at 1 and 2 we can afford to go speculative with the next pick.

Probably been addressed in the 1000 posts each day, but playing it out in my mind.

We wait out the clock on a Starcevich trade, waiting til FA lodge deadline is over.

Worst case:

Allen only nets Band 2, we match and force a trade.

Brisbane have to give us at least Pick 19 to get Oscar Allen moving, leaving their draft hand (43, 46, 52) woefully inadequate to cover any bids, let alone a bid at Pick 1 or 2. Acknowledging they’ll strengthen a little if Ah Chee moves, but still running a risk.

We can still get Starcevich as a FA if timing allows, either forcing a trade or getting him for free as Lions can’t afford our offer. No worthwhile compo for Brisbane in any case, as they’ve brought Draper in.

Alternatively if the timing doesn’t work by a matter of minutes/hours, Starcevich arrives via draft shenanigans, or we miss out entirely which wouldn’t suit the club so assume it doesn’t come to that.

Really not seeing where Brisbane have any edge here given they’re negotiating against both us and the clock.

He would not come cheap though. Carlton badly need him and he's contracted for two more years.

They will throw Dev in and call it even.

If the Lions want to play hard and win every trade and look after themselves. All good.

We bid early and burn those points they shafted us in getting.

Why not both I would do iether or both in a heartbeat
