Quick Links

List Changes - 2025
In:
  • Brandon Starcevich arrives at West Coast in a three team deal
  • Tylar Young (Richmond) arrived at West Coast in exchange for Pick 38.
  • Deven Robertson (Brisbane) has agreed to join West Coast and will be signed on to the rookie list after being delisted by Brisbane
Out:
  • Oscar Allen joins Brisbane as a FA - West Coast receive Pick 2 as compensation
  • Liam Ryan and a 2027 R3 pick has been traded to St Kilda for a 2026 R2 pick
  • Campbell Chesser has been traded to Carlton for Pick 41
  • Jayden Hunt announces retirement
  • Jack Petruccelle, Callum Jamieson and Loch Rawlinson not offered new contracts
  • Coen Livingstone joins the list of players not offered a new contract

Players Out of Contract - 2025 (0)
  • Jamie Cripps and Malakai Champion seem to have been offered new contracts despite there being no official announcement. Means that all players out of contract for 2025 have been given new contracts despite or removed from the playing list

2025 Draft Order

Current Draft Picks:
Round 1: 1, 2, 13
Round 2: 34, 41
Round 3: 53, 58 (These picks are in excess of available list spots so will be forfeited if we don’t consolidate our 2025 picks up the order or trade some for future picks)

List Spots Available (39 of 48):
• Main list (33 of 38) - 5* (in: Starcevich, Young out: Allen, Ryan, Chesser, Hunt, Petruccelle, Jamieson)
• Cat A rookie list (5 of 8) - 3* (in: Robertson (pending), out: Rawlinson)
• Cat B rookie list (1 of 2) - 2 (out: Livingstone)

* Based on Dewar being upgraded after the maximum 3 years on the rookie list. Hutchinson may also have been upgraded but this isn’t confirmed - if it is we will have 4 main and 4 rookie list spots open

* Matthew Clarke has stated we have 5 main list spots

Matt Clarke wraps up the trade period - 6PR

So if we bid on Uwland at pick 1, Patterson pick 2, Annable pick 3 this is what happens to our picks.

Pre Draft: 1, 2, 13, 34, 41, 53, 58
Post Draft: 4, 5, 16, 30, 36, 45, 50

Bear in mind, we still have first two picks of open draft.
By doing this our points for 34 onwards go from 608 value to 992 value meaning we can easily match anything for our players later in draft. Also means we could snag a Curtin or Barker at 30 if no bids to match as yet.
Whilst this might be the case now I suspect Brisbane and GC will trade their picks (15, 17, 18, 23, 24, 28, 29) before our 34 to later picks which will mean our selection at 34 won't be brought forward as much as that.

It'll be interesting to see how many trades they can make to push back before the bids come.

Who's on the chopping block next season?

Probable: Harry Barnett, Jack Williams, Tom Cole, Bailey Williams, Harvey Johnston, Jamie Cripps (Is he still even on the list?)

Possible: Malakai Champion, Jacob Newton, Rhett Bazzo, Matt Flynn, Noah Long.

Going to be interesting if we shoot up the ladder and the AFL takes away our extra rookie spots.
Owies should be high on the probable list. To be cut with 1 season left to go a la Legdon. Long on the probable list unless he has a breakout season.
Flynn and Williams not going anywhere unless we find decent replacements.

According to this, Livingstone is the only Eagle without a contract

Either it’s wrong or our club’s social media team have been asleep. Tbh, both are a possibility- for example it says Beecken is out of contract at Brisbane but his signing was announced the sane time as Tunstill

Adelaide: Nil
Brisbane Lions: Conor McKenna, Darragh Joyce, Luke Beecken
Carlton: Mitch McGovern, Rob Manahan, Will White, Matt Duffy, Flynn Young
Collingwood: Lachie Sullivan, Mason Cox, Tom Mitchell
Essendon: Ben Hobbs, Luamon Lual, Will Setterfield
Fremantle: Nil
Geelong: Cam Guthrie, Jed Bews, Joe Pike, Oliver Wiltshire, Ted Clohesy
Gold Coast: Asher Eastham
GWS Giants: Wade Derksen
Hawthorn: Seamus Mitchell, Jamie Uhr-Henry
Melbourne: Nil
North Melbourne: Cooper Harvey, Will Phillips, Darcy Tucker, Geordie Payne
Port Adelaide: Nil
Richmond: Thomson Dow, Tyler Sonsie
St Kilda: Ryan Byrnes
Sydney: Dane Rampe
West Coast: Coen Livingstone
Western Bulldogs: Jason Johannisen, Nick Coffield, Caleb Poulter

Hobbs and Phillips would be of interest if they don’t get new deals at Essendon and North respectively

Before the extra rookie spots were announced, Thomson Dow is one guy I thought might be a good get as a marquee player for the Beagles. We probably don’t need any of those now as the mature rookies will pretty much fill that role, and I’m not sure he’d be ahead of any of the guys we’ve already been linked to (eg Schoenberg, Berry, Macrae, DevRob obviously).

I suspect he probably ends up with the Saints new standalone reserves alongside his brother anyway.

Much will depend on the bidding for our NGAs and Banfield but I’d like the club to try to find a ruckman later in the draft. Jamieson’s gone, Livingstone doesn’t have a contract (yet), and the rucks we have are well exposed and have so far proven themselves unable to compete. Flynn Riley is the one I’d lean to. There may be other good prospects out there.

It’s all very well to look ahead to Benji Van Rooyen and Axel Walsh but there’s no guarantee we can get them and they may (like most ruckmen) take years to develop.

If Axel Walsh continues on his current trajectory there’s no chance we get him considering the picks Tasmania have in that draft.

Throw a rookie list spot at Seb Royale (East Perth). It won't happen but that's the type of bold move the club should be making with additional Rookie spots.

Seb has been injured all year and is in the WA U18 summer squad as an overage prospect.

If Axel Walsh continues on his current trajectory there’s no chance we get him considering the picks Tasmania have in that draft.

Axel Walsh is mini-draft eligible, and it's up to him to nominate. He's a Trinity and Mt Lawley Inglewood product like Starcevich.

2027 and 2028 1st round picks should be put on table for him.

The points value of those R2 and R3 picks are nowhere near as valuable so the type of trade backs for multiple later picks isn’t as viable as it once was

Also, there aren’t a lot of clubs with several picks in that range

Some examples of clubs with picks they might be willing to package up:

  • Collingwood (39,45) = 407 points equivalent to pick 32 (405)
  • Fremantle (20,47) = 875 points equivalent to pick 17 (879)
  • Geelong (19,40) = 1034 points equivalent to pick 14 (1024)
  • North Melbourne (25,26,46) = 1285 points equivalent to pick 10 (1276)
  • West Coast (34,41,53) = 608 points equivalent to pick 24 (621)

North using 25 and 26 (1151 points) would be the best option in a trade for pick 15 (973 points) off Gold Coast. The others represent only marginal gains

Adelaide, Carlton, GWS, Hawthorn, Melbourne, Port, Richmond, Saints and Bulldogs don’t have multiple picks of any value to bundle up

Essendon and Sydney have their own points requirements to match bids so aren’t going to want to move up the order for a loss of points

Trading picks for points is definitely going to be harder

Aside from which players we draft, I’m most interested in seeing how the DVI changes impact the draft

With the high probability that A Reid becomes a very good mobile ruck in another 3 years its the next generation ruck that probably need to be put on the list 3-4 years behind to develop.
A Reid 2023 draft, BVR or Walsh are the logical next step and just happen to be WA kids.
Flynn and BW will stay on the list until they are ready to take over.
Barnett should be delisted asap, JW provides more ruck support and is also a decent 2nd ruck/fwd option.

I think you're right - I didn't go into the detail of potential trades but your analysis indicates there will be some done but not as many as I thought would push back past our pick (34).

What I can't work out is why we don't maximise our list spots by delisting and re-rookie the likes of Barnett and Cripps at a minimum. Surely that's a no brainer to give us the most flexibility for the draft, we can't be seriously worried of them being poached can we?

From your previous posts I believe that would give us 7 list spots if we did this. Allows us to take a slider with 34 is no bids come for Williams. Even if they do I don't think we match a bid in the twenties anyway.

Also allows us to match a bid for Evans if it comes - would be silly not to unless we are sure no bid comes but why take the risk if we don't need to.

Next year draft will be stacked with good ruckman though
There is two good Vic ruck and a SA ruck
Where this years rucks suck
