2025 Draft Order

Current Draft Picks:
Round 1: 1, 2, 13
Round 2: 34, 41
Round 3: 53, 58 (These picks are in excess of available list spots so will be forfeited if we don’t consolidate our 2025 picks up the order or trade some for future picks)

List Spots Available (39 of 48):
• Main list (33 of 38) - 5* (in: Starcevich, Young out: Allen, Ryan, Chesser, Hunt, Petruccelle, Jamieson)
• Cat A rookie list (5 of 8) - 3* (in: Robertson (pending), out: Rawlinson)
• Cat B rookie list (1 of 2) - 2 (out: Livingstone)

* Based on Dewar being upgraded after the maximum 3 years on the rookie list. Hutchinson may also have been upgraded but this isn’t confirmed - if it is we will have 4 main and 4 rookie list spots open

* Matthew Clarke has stated we have 5 main list spots

Matt Clarke wraps up the trade period - 6PR

We’ve got those spots for three seasons.

The AFL reserves the right to screw over our list management by taking them away if we actually start looking like a football club again.

(Realistically, the AFL should either give them to us or not, this half-arsed "we reserve the right" business is crap. And to be honest, WC and Freo should both have this sort of thing permanently as some assistance for the travel burden)

So if we bid on Uwland at pick 1, Patterson pick 2, Annable pick 3 this is what happens to our picks.

Pre Draft: 1, 2, 13, 34, 41, 53, 58
Post Draft: 4, 5, 16, 30, 36, 45, 50

Bear in mind, we still have first two picks of open draft.
By doing this our points for 34 onwards go from 608 value to 992 value meaning we can easily match anything for our players later in draft. Also means we could snag a Curtin or Barker at 30 if no bids to match as yet.

Sound like it's in our interest to bid

Oh yes, there it is in the fine print.

Wouldn’t put it past them TBH

Part of the package was that the AFL reserves the right to change the terms after one year. So those rookie spots aren't set in stone. Although it's unlikely, if we start doing well they can take them away next year.

Yeah, the caveat is just included for the one in a million chance we get back top 4 next year and the media/clubs put pressure on the AFL.

Who's on the chopping block next season?

Probable: Harry Barnett, Jack Williams, Tom Cole, Bailey Williams, Harvey Johnston, Jamie Cripps (Is he still even on the list?)

Possible: Malakai Champion, Jacob Newton, Rhett Bazzo, Matt Flynn, Noah Long.

Going to be interesting if we shoot up the ladder and the AFL takes away our extra rookie spots.
While we have the extra rookie spots for 3 years I expect 2 will be for NGA talent to filter through and find the best and 2 will be mature age talent like Dev.
My chopping block is we need in 2026 another elite mid if we take Duursma.
An elite KPD or best available in that position.

My list:
Cripps
Barnett
Johnstone
Bazzo
Long
Cole
They look the most likely.

Next likely:
Champion
JW will be retained.
BW wont be on the chopping block unless someone is traded in to replace him.
Newton looks decent.
Flynn is ok as a 2nd ruck.
My thoughts.

Suns still have their extra rookie spots.

We won't be anywhere near them

Yeo if he doesn't get on the park.

Owies even if paid out early.

Not any oldies left who would attract trades. Duggan maybe?

The points on the picks 34 onwards may be more with a 1st round bid on Dean and potentially later 1st round bids on Addinsall or any of the Essendon or Swans academy players. Hope we take a punt on Barker.

I’m currently on a flight from Sydney to Perth. Aaron Francis is a few rows behind me.

Maybe he is holidaying - but given he was delisted by the Swans my first thought was that maybe, just maybe, he could be going to meet one of the Perth clubs.

He’s certainly been an underachiever in his career; but I think him being delisted has as much to do with Charlie Curnow coming in as it does with him not being up to the level. He looked okay at times last year. It could be a free-hit for West Coast.

No idea if this will amount to anything, just thought I’d share.

Good list thanks. Agree mostly with your selections.

JW seems to be on the outer with Mini and he had a very forgettable year. Depends if we take CDT or any other talls in the draft/rookie/PSD/SSP. He's such a reliable set shot though, and with Oscar gone, maybe he's safe.

Bazzo is decent depth in an area we are sorely lacking, reckon he stays with continued form and lack of injuries next year.

Agree about BW but surely we are working on improving our ruck situation, and Flynn is (marginally) better at this stage. If Bailey could only stick more marks he'd be a keeper.

I have a soft spot for Long. Such a classy player, great decision maker, great ball user, just needs to bring it together next year after a forgettable 2025.

I really would like us to open up a sixth main list spot by moving Cripps to the rookie list or him retiring which I low key hope he does

It means we can use a fourth selection to get a slider or someone that fits our list needs like the two you mentioned. Rodriguez is another that could last until around pick 30

Alternatively it guarantees we have positions for all three of Williams, Banfield and Evans if we don’t like the options when that pick comes up

I think we need to be planning the phasing out or moving on of Duggan. But it will be difficult and ugly to force out a loyal servant. At some point next season we need to start asking him if he is open to a trade.

**** me are we really going to work ourselves up over not taking Ah Chee against his wishes in the pre-season draft? Something that for myriad reasons is a complete fantasy and would set the AFL, player managers, and probably the UN, on the warpath.

And look, I get. As a master deal-maker myself, even I can find myself a bit hot under the collar when a rolled gold future money spinner of mine like, 'ChatGPT but for dogs', is turned down because the cucks at Google can't see the big picture and instead cover their asses with bs excuses like, 'It doesn't make any sense', or 'dogs don't have money', or 'seriously though how the **** did you get my number?'

My point is that like anything in life, you have to know where you are at or you're going to make endless mistakes. And yes much like the cucks at Google, the Eagles were pushovers and seemingly without any strategy under the last regime, but that is not where we are at now.

Which is why - for the moment - I'm ok with the 'we're reasonable guys', smile and shake hands approach, because we are bereft of talent, an absolute basket case with nothing to sell, and at this stage we are absolutely at the mercy of the AFL, player managers and to a lesser extent, other clubs.

So we won't be arseholes, we won't push our luck, and slowly the narrative will change. The AFL opens its gift bag, and the player managers go, 'its actually a good vibe there, they're good to deal with, I'd hear them out'.

And when we're on the up, an attractive proposition again, and the begging bowls are out away, we can afford to be the hardarses - and I'll be disappointed if we aren't.

Because the failure of the Tim Kelly trade was that Geelong was ruthless and we didn't match them, we didn't know where we were at and we caved, making a rival stronger and with zero incentive for us to do so. The lesson from that is not to always be pricks (Hawthorn) but that we need to pick our moments.

There's a quote that plays on Clausewitz' maxim by someone who's name escapes me, but it goes something like, 'diplomacy is a continuation of war by other means'.

Which is to say, diplomacy doesn't need to be a sign of weakness or surrender but instead another tool to further your interests. Something we can never afford to lose sight of again.
This is deep.

Also not wrong.

Maybe the only good thing about not being in a flag window is not having to swallow having your club over pay for what you think is last piece of the puzzle for a flag just because it is possibly the last piece, and therefore the other club knows you will overpay. Like the Swans did with Curnow and the Suns did with Petracca and Hawthorn would have done had the deal gone through with Merrett.
