In:
  • Brandon Starcevich arrives at West Coast in a three team deal
  • Tylar Young (Richmond) arrived at West Coast in exchange for Pick 38.
  • Deven Robertson (Brisbane) has agreed to join West Coast and will be signed on to the rookie list after being delisted by Brisbane
Out:
  • Oscar Allen joins Brisbane as a FA - West Coast receive Pick 2 as compensation

2025 Draft Order

Current Draft Picks:
Round 1: 1, 2, 13
Round 2: 34, 41
Round 3: 53, 58 (These picks are in excess of available list spots so will be forfeited if we don’t consolidate our 2025 picks up the order or trade some for future picks)

List Spots Available (39 of 48):
• Main list (33 of 38) - 5* (in: Starcevich, Young out: Allen, Ryan, Chesser, Hunt, Petruccelle, Jamieson)
• Cat A rookie list (5 of 8) - 3* (in: Robertson (pending), out: Rawlinson)
• Cat B rookie list (1 of 2) - 2 (out: Livingstone)

* Based on Dewar being upgraded after the maximum 3 years on the rookie list. Hutchinson may also have been upgraded but this isn’t confirmed - if it is we will have 4 main and 4 rookie list spots open

* Matthew Clarke has stated we have 5 main list spots

Matt Clarke wraps up the trade period - 6PR

I feel physically sick reading the latest interview with Clarke.

The way he is talking about Starcevich and Young is the exact approach the he took with Baker- foam about what wonderful players they are and how great they will be for our culture, talk like it is a certainty before the deal was thrashed out and then get reamed on the trade table as a result.

I'm genuinely petrified how bad these deals are going to be. In a year where we could literally trade noone, go to the draft and set up our future with the best two players in the draft and another two first round picks you just know there is going to be absolute carnage by the end of trade week.

I feel as if there is a shift in AFL clubs becoming more ruthless in their player recruitment, and I have no issue with Brisbane playing the cards they have.

However I wish as a club trying to improve our list we would use all options available to us. An advantage to being last on the ladder is the first pick in the PSD. I'm not saying we should threaten every trade to end up there, but for players like Young or Brockman who are OOC and have less value this should be the avenue they join the club.

If other teams have a problem with it, much like Nothern Academies or FA compo, take it up with the AFL who created this system.

Sure, but also...

If we get to the end of the free-agency period and Brisbane don't lodge, then there'll be a trade. We're apparently offering nearly the same deal money wise for Starcevich as they are for Allen, so let's say it's a straight swap (it won't be, but just for sake of brevity).

Brisbane still get Allen, they now don't get pick 16
Eagles still get Starcevich, keep 16, but now we don't get pick 2

The consequences are far greater for us than they are for them, and they're betting that they can force us to hand over a better pick because of it.

Of course in theory with 10 minutes to go on Friday or whenever the deadline is, they should just push it through because for them pick 22 or whatever it ends up as is still better than nothing , the problem for them is once they do that they've lost their leverage, so it really just depends how close to the line they're willing to sail (and how pissed off Allen's management become along the way)
If Brisbane don’t lodge, WC should for Starce. Brisbane would then have to trade for OA but they would have no leverage unless they match the contract offered to Starce by WC to stop him from moving via FA. But then they’d be paying a higher salary than what they’d like for Starcevich and there would still be no guarantee the Allen trade gets done.

Of course this won’t happen because it’s a lose/lose scenario. Brisbane would miss out on Allen (or whatever they trade for him) plus pick 22 (or whatever we’re offering for Starce). Much better for them to lodge something that gives WC band 1 and accept a reasonable offer for Starcevich.

WC hold all the power. Brisbane gifting us band 1 costs them no draft capital, but denying it costs them quite a bit. This is all without mentioning our position in the national and pre-season drafts which allows WC the ability to pick Annable at 1 and picking up Starcevich at the psd.

What is BS is that Brisbane can lodge the allen paperwork 1min before deadline and we wont have our answer on compo till after .

Say it is band 2 and we match we should then put starcivich FA paperwork in but we can't because it's past the deadline .

If you are awaiting compo after the time has elapsed you should be given a window to lodge a further FA bid

Found the shirt you should be wearing during the negotiations.

Can you delist then re-rookie a guy who is still under contract? As opposed to someone out of contract
Could be an option for Barnett if required. Surely nobody else would take him.
I think you'll find Barnett Livingstone and Cripps are in this boat, depending on trades and draft hawl and NGA bids.

Gloves are off now. Sam Mitchell has made that abundantly clear. As has saints. This year is the shock to system that will force the AFL to do something about contracts and whether clubs have more leverage with contracted players. My money is there will be new contract clauses that allow clubs to trade while a player is in contract.

It won't happen, they know that if Oscar doesn't leave as a FA then we will take Starc as a FA and they get nothing for him (as there will be no pick 2 to be diluted).
So we get Oscar Allen back get Starcevich as a FA and we also keep the pick 19 . Thats not too bad a scenario for us

My theory I this your post is all part of the Brisbane strategy

The pick 16 is not in play "at this stage" comment bothers me a bit, but at least we're not considering it atm. Hopefully he's not bluffing. Needs to either be used as a pick upgrade or to pick up a slider.
He used the same lines last year right before he dropped the baker bomb. We've got the worst negotiator in the comp - trade period is scary.

Then if it's band 2, we match and force them trade.

If they don't want to trade then Allen comes back. Starc stays at lions and we bid on Annable at pick 1.

Lions look like blackmailing fools and other clubs will be very carefully moving forward to negotiate with them.

Genuine lulz at the bedwetting going on from some posters in this thread.

Must be expensive washing those bed sheets every day.
Oh yes, because the club deserves our trust with their great instincts and decision making for sure. I have full faith in the guys who led the club to 1 win in a season

Why wouldn't the club grab Stac as a free agent in this situation?

At what point does Andrew McDougall, Allen’s manager, start putting out feelers to the likes of Sydney or Hawthorn to see if they’re interested in a 26 year old KPF?

Can’t imagine they’d be overly thrilled with Brisbane delaying lodgement of the paperwork much longer
This. Surely Brisbane are just posturing to try and squeeze Clarke. I would have thought the contract terms, including pay and tenure, have already been agreed in principle with Allen and his management.

I would imagine they can’t just say “we’re trying to screw West Coast to get a first rounder out of them so sorry Oscar but if they don’t pony up we’re reducing your pay by $150,000 a year down to Band 2”.

Yes, but Brisbane may well match.

Other than what Clarke has already said publicly the next step/statement is very clear:

“Allen and Starcevich are only linked in one very simple way - if and until we have confirmed Allen’s departure we do not have an available list position for Starcevich. We cannot negotiate in good faith with Brisbane on a deal we can’t conclude. However once we have confirmed either way the status of Oscar (inclusive of our review whether to match any free agent offer or not, as is our right) we will have clarity on our list position and our ability to negotiate a trade or lodge a free agency offer for Starcevich”

Then go negotiate a way to trade out 16 to someone else 🤣

FWIW picks 17 + 23 are worth around the same as pick 7, so there is nothing in it for GC to do a swap. We would need to give them extra points value this year or they are just helping us out for the sake of it and only we do that.

17 plus the PP and we throw in a 3rd plus don't bid.

We bid 1 on Uwland and bid 2 on Patterson that guts their draft hand.

Would force GC to retain pick 7 to match both bids. Welcome to 2026.

Conspiracy theory: this was orchestrated by the AFL to get out of giving us pick 2..Then they can blame us for not caving in to Brisbane's demand
Brisbane are not allowed to demand we trade them more, and in return they guarantee us #2 compo.

If anything the AFL should be issuing a please explain to Brisbane to clarify why lodging FA paperwork is in any way linked to a trade with the club losing the FA.

In any other situation, Starcevich would be coming to us for free. In this set of circumstances, we need to trade to avoid diluting our compensation pick. Brisbane are well within their rights to delay lodging the paperwork for Allen if it's viewed as some sort of lever that they can pull to extract value. The onus is on us not to blink.

We'd be livid if we weren't trying the same if the shoe was on the other foot.

I see what you saying but what is stopping us matching the FA bid for allen then taking starcivich as a FA ?
