I reckon you could lock Sheezel into a HFF round 1 debut for a club like us.
Jhye Clark (* his parents are campaigners, who calls their kid that with that spelling) you could lock in for a round 1 debut at back pocket or HBF.

There's a lot of talls now looking like 15-40 draft picks. Hopefully we can draft and develop well, we still need a couple more on the list.
There are defs guys who could play early and generally thats mostly due to body size & fitness etc, but im talking about guys who are just too good to be left out. Would make any AFL team R1 even if played out of position. Guys like Nick Daicos, Walsh, Wingard, B.Smith, Rowell.
Id say most draftees would still do the obligatory handful of reserves games if nothing more than for the coaches to pat themselves on the back and tell each other that they made the player earn it.

I spoke with someone today who knows Sheezel very well. They were told directly from the kid that he's desperate go to the Hawks but would be content with Essendon as well. When i asked would he play the homesick/religious card they said quite possibly, to which i asked is there any chance he would change his mind about playing for an interstate side?

Their reply? "he's grown up entitled his whole life so i doubt it".

There's often a bit of that about Vic Metro kids.

I am already pre-emptively feeling rejected on behalf of the club by his attitude and am wishing the worst for him and his career...

If Hawks are keen and Sheezel continues to impress, there might be a request for a slide back. Someone with pace like Sneezel would be highly sought after both Bomber and Hawks, expecially Bombers with their lack of pace.

Hawks are holding pick 5 and 23. A slide back in points from 2 to 5 is worth pick 30. I would seriously consider 5 and 23 for 2 and our R3. That would leave us with 5, 19, 20, 23 and 25.

Bomber are holding pick 3 an, 21 and 39. I would consider 3 and 21 for 2 and 25 assuming they are keen on Sneezel. Go back 1 in R1 and go up 4 or so with the Port pick.

You might ask why would bombers do it - we let it slip the Hawks are keen on Sneezel. Often in drafts it involves who else you might trade with, not just whether you will take person X.

Rising South Australian midfielder Mattaes Phillipou put in a standout display in the Croweaters’ first under-18 national championships clash against the Allies on Sunday.
The 191cm midfielder tallied 23 disposals at 87 per cent efficiency, 16 contested possessions, a goal and a game-high 182 KFC SuperCoach points, impressing with his inside ball-winning, decision making and clean hands in traffic.

Phjillipou has shot into first round contention and is among the top prospects from South Australia after a stellar season for Woodville-West Torrens, where he has been a prolific possession winner at under-18 level and has managed to make his SANFL reserves debut.

The Croweaters were missing Kobe Ryan, Nick Sadler, Harry Barnett and Will Paton after the quartet entered Covid protocols but managed to open their account strongly with a 37-point win at Thebarton Oval.

Phillipou combined well with Eagles teammate Adam D’Aloia at the coalface, who won 18 disposals, nine tackles and 112 points.

South Australian key forward Isaac Keeler (three goals and 102 points) outshone highly touted tall Harry Lemmey, who kicked one major and had seven touches.

Adelaide father-son prospect Max Michalanney was efficient out of defence with 15 disposals at 87 per cent efficiency.

For the Allies, AFL Academy products Lachie Cowan (20 disposals, six tackles and 111 points) and Jason Gilbee (21 disposals, six marks and 96 points) provided dash and rebound as both continued their eye-catching campaigns to date.

Fellow AFL Academy and Lions father-son prospect Jaspa Fletcher, the son of Adrian, had 23 possessions, 107 points and kicked a long range goal from beyond the arc in an enhanced inside midfield role.

Giants Academy member Harry Rowston was arguably the Allies’ best, finishing with three goals, 24 disposals, eight marks and a team-high 116 points in a promising outing up forward and through the middle.

Fellow Giants linked ruckman Nick Madden, who has an imposing size at 204cm and 110kg, won the ruck battle

Phillipou got 182 supercoach points in the first U18's game for those of you like me that are hoping he jumps up into the same tier as Warlord.

Bit of a trend developing , of players who are pulling the "stay home card", in recent years come draft time.

2018 - Bailey Smith. Sandringham Dragons.
2020 - Archie Perkins. Sandringham Dragons.
2022 - Harry Sheezel. Sandringham Dragons.

Ummmmmmm ..........spot the common denominator.

Out of interest, does the Dragons' catchment area have a high proportion of private schools/include affluent suburbs in their zone?

Another game like that this weekend against Vic Country and he will start to get his name moving north on the boards. The Allies early games are usually weak as they get very little time to play as a team. Vic Country on the other hand usually produce tough inside mids and hence a perfect test. for those wanting to watch it, it is on AFL.com on Sunday 1.30 Adelaide time

I am looking forward to having at least 2 great midfield options available to us. Both Wardlaw and Phillipou are possibilities - depends on the next 3 months. I am discounting Ashcroft as he is not in play. The surprise for me was The Pieman taking what was screaming out as right for us. He normally does something different. Perhaps he might just do the same in November this year!!

Yes it does.

The last private school alumni from WA to play the home sick card was Yeo, and not sure Aquinas can be classified as top end and I think it had to do with the low ball offer Brisbane made him and the crap structures they had at the club

Way more so than any other TAC Cup side, I’d say.

Bingo.

Unless Jackson is desperate to come home, I'd be doing whatever I can to get him to sign a short extension with Melbourne like English has with the Bulldogs. We can reassess in 2 years time when NicNat is on the way out and we've had ample time to assess the ruckmen on our list. Need to use all the picks we've got for youth for at least the next 2 drafts.

Is 21 youth?

I’ve said it before but the go home factor is always going to be more of an issue with Victorian kids than any other state due to the imbalance of having 55% of the sides coming from one state

Any Victorian kid that shows enough talent to indicate an AFL future may be realistic goes through the TAC pathway in the knowledge that he has a better than 50/50 chance that, if drafted, it’ll be to a team in his home state

Compare that to WA/SA kids who are faced with odds of only marginally better odds than 1 in 10 they’ll be picked up locally

The possibility of moving interstate is far greater for WA/SA lads so they get used to the notion of shifting to the point where it becomes exciting, especially if the move is to Melbourne.

I don’t think the Victorian boys, especially the Metro ones, fully comprehend or consider they might have to shift so they aren’t forced to make the same realisation

It’s also far easier for a Victorian player to actually go home as there’s 10 clubs to return to

Consider Luke Jackson. Right now, as good a player as he is, he doesn’t really suit the needs of either WA club to the point where both West Coast and Fremantle would be compromising their list builds to chase him. When there’s only 2 clubs the likelihood of a player being a good strategic fit is lower than in Victoria where there’s 10 clubs

So Vic metro kids are far more likely to pull the flight risk card and are more likely for such a stunt to work (it also flys under the radar of a Vic-centric media who rarely question it)

* I deliberately excluded NSW and Queensland kids from the discussion as the northern academies make them a different proposition again

Eastcoasteagle - care to provide us with a flavour of the "stay in Melbourne" APS schools that fall in the catchment zone of the Dragons?

It is likely to be residential address and not school location but the residential and school have a close correlation but Oakleigh butt up against Sandy so some schools will flip either way.

Schools in the Dragons zone I recall include Melbourne Grammar (Chesser went there but as a border so tougher), Xavier, Halleybury, Brighton, St Kevins, Scotch, De La Salle and St Bedes. I see them as more "privileged".

Caufield Grammar, Wesley and Trinity tend to lie in the Sandy catchment.

Perkins went to Brighton and Smith went to Xavier - both Dragons who said they did not want to go interstate. Not sure which school but the late Harley Balic was aslo a Dragon who did not want to leave Melbourne.

Liam Baker our “second biggest trade target”

And for those thinking Patrick Cripps, Mitch McGovern, Liam Baker or Tim English (to name a few) are homesick for Perth, they grew up in the country so have now likely lived more years in Melbourne than Perth.

One of the reason the northern clubs like the Vic Country players is that they have already got it in their mind that they are leaving home - it is just a matter of how far.

The biggest go home factor by a long margin is with the Geelong Falcons. This is also economic and lifestyle as you can live on the coast from Queenscliff to Anglesea and have a short commute to Geelong. Dangerfield, Rohan, Cameron, to name a few. We did well to keep Schofield and Nelson. The location is pretty damn good and the property prices are about half that of the good suburbs of Melbourne.

Exceedingly dry stuff there.

Yes it does.

Supposedly it was only $15k difference between what Yeo wanted and what Brisbane were willing to offer.

After that his management contacted Freo and they weren't interested as they didn't think they needed him.

So landed in our laps and we haven't looked back.

Geelong is the 'capital' of that region so woyod have pulling power - nice coastal area with best surf in AU as long has you have a good wetsuit

add to that Brisbane were not the most desirable club at that time - the famous five escapees were all leaving a sinking ship
