AdRort was only last week???

yup we’ve surpassed Abbott levels of a shambolic govt

Well done lnp!!

“Also this week, it was reported that Australia has slipped to 11th position on the TIA Corruption Perception Index, a fall from 7th in 2012.”

The penny is finally dropping.
Jail the lot of the campaigners once Labour get back in.

Rob R one of the things being experimented with in the States is donation vouchers.

Seattle is the main one trialling it, and the system is simple.

1) govt covers the cost of much of the campaign

2) who gets that money is determined by the voters

3) every voter gets a voucher for $xxx dollars

4) they can give this voucher to any candidate of their choice, who then can cash it in for their campaign funds

- there were massive concerns about people swiping them from letter boxes, but this hasnt been a huge issue so far

- needing to get vouchers has meant candidates are doing much more retail politicking (door knocking, local shopping centre stands), as they need to convince people to hand them a voucher

- more main party candidates with strong door knocking campaigns have been biggest beneficiaries. main party candidates who live in city hall alone got nuked

- only a small proportion of vouchers were used, engagement is still very low

very much a work in progress, but i like the concept
How it turn out? I would be worried about groups external to the parties influencing the campaigns and how hard it would be for independents to compete. I do like anything that reduces the influence of donors and would require parties to pay attention to safe seats.

Independents owned it. They door knocked, and got vouchers more readily than the majors who sat on their arse waiting for mail ins.

Big lesson is that rewards grass roots campaigning

Would love someone to dig back into the way Liberal mates won the initial tender for a Victorian casino licence. The preferred tenderer in the initial tender was an international company with vast casino running experience. That was called in and Liberal mates with no casino running experience won it second time around. Leading to the international company who were initially the preferred tenderer saying they would never tender again in this country. Wonder why?

Go your hardest... be sure to apprise your fellow travellers of the role of both the Cain & Kirner Governments in the introduction of gambling more widely, the pokies & the casino.

I'm not sure what you mean by that last sentence. Do you expect private contractors to take a loss?

The Vic ALP government f’ed up oversight of HQ. I don't see how Murdoch and ScoMo can be held responsible for that.
Private contractors should not be involved in bio hazard prevention/containment measures. Private companies are there to make profits and rightly so.

Quarantine and Inspection Service, like Border Security and Immigration and Customs, are a Federal Government responsibility. Right from the start and at every step along the way, Morrison and his inept ministers have failed spectacularly and instead of the Murdoch/Costello/Stokes media conglomerates reporting Morrison's abrogation of his and the Federal Government's responsibilities, they have sought to look for any and every "angle" to take the heat off Morrison and his bunch of buffoons.

The Victorian Government, just like every other State Government, does not have the resources, the facilities nor the trained personel to undertake bio-hazard containment and prevention matters; they certainly do not have the facilities, resources nor the trained personnel to run large scale, hazardous quarantine operations. Medi -hotels are completely ridiculous and completely inappropriate. Where do people think that Covid escaped from? It didn't just miraculously appear! It escaped from the profoundly idiotic Medi-hotels set up and the only ones that have benefited, have been private contractors.

These types of operations are not about making money, they are a public health and safety issue and have nothing to do with making profits.

What is required is management & failures are not limited to private enterprise.

The ideology that underpins your thought process beggars belief.

So other than allegations what have you got?
Hang on.

You said this:
Corruption is endemic in Government in Australia - only a very narrow view would deny its somehow only a problem for the Libs.
... when someone pointed out Liberal party corruption, but when someone responds with 'I agree', you ask them what they have other than allegations.

Is your position a) that corruption is endemic in Australian politics, or b) that they're all innocent until the allegation is demonstrated?

You cannot wave the 'Both sides' flag whilst also waving the 'Innocent until proven guilty' flags. They get in each other's way.

I can, & will, do whatever reflects my opinion. I do know the difference between an allegation & corruption proven.

You're full of s**t.

Either corruption is endemic in politics, or they're all innocent until allegations hold up. You cannot pick and choose which argument you run with based upon what best allows you defend the Liberal party in the moment; the two arguments counter each other.

It's an either or proposition. Pick one.

Go back to sleep. There are some things that private firms do very well and make money because of it and there are some things which private firms should be kept well away from and they are processes which are of national strategic importance. Quarantine and inspection services, bio-hazard prevention and containment, customs and immigration, border security.

It has nothing to do with ideology but all to do with common sense. The only one freaking out because it impinges upon his ideology of nothing gets in the way of making a buck, is you.

Theres one party with a fully funded federal icac with teeth

One without.

Guess which is which…

& I support a Fed body ... maybe its not as simple as one side or the other.
We all know its the questions that swing votes are what count.
If you vote in the next election for:

Liberal and they win - no icac

Nationals and they win - no icac

Labor and they win - icac

Greens and they win - icac

An innovative new form of capitalism, known as ‘can-do capitalism’, works by providing large tax-payer funded government subsidies to industries that would otherwise not exist in an open market.

An economist who spoke to The Shovel said a recent example of the new economic system – a $600 million gas plant that nobody asked for – illustrates how can-do capitalism works. “An investor, in this case the government, determines where future demand will be highest. It then ignores that opportunity, and instead assigns funds to a different industry that is threatening to withdraw party donations. It’s just a different way of thinking about the word ‘demand’,” he said.

He said there were some other important differences when compared with the traditional system. “Unlike normal capitalism, which relies on market forces to determine the allocation of resources, can-do capitalism uses an advanced form of resource allocation known as ‘corruption’. The technique has been used to determine where key infrastructure – such as roads and sporting grounds – should be built”.

Another difference is the way prices are set. “Prices under this system can be higher, particularly if it’s for a parcel of land owned by the mate of a government minister”.

Can-do capitalism also has its own way of dealing with externalities, like greenhouse gas emissions. Instead of using a market-based system, such as a carbon price or trading scheme, it funds the polluters direct
