Did Punts even exist back then? Sometimes it feels like he evolved from the necessary atoms coming together just in time for 2014.

Bloody shit time to support NSW/Sydney based teams having huge seasons.

Sydney Kings - All anyone will remember is the series was forfeited.
NSW cricket - Victorians crying that there should have been a final even though they weren’t even guaranteed a place in it (seeing them so pissed is fun, though).
Sydney FC - Runaway favourites yet if we’re given any plate/trophy and the season isn’t completed it’ll be because of Sydney bias.

Yes, I know, I've seen it too... but the AFL isn't going bankrupt, and there are plenty of people who don't understand that going bankrupt IS a commercial reality and is in fact, a tool that is there to help them. I was referring to the supposed conversation between the AFL and Rupert... that is not going to happen.
Actually it is pretty dire for clubs and the AFL. The revenue comes from gate takings and TV rights. With no fans, no takings, so each club suffers big losses. The TV rights only get paid if the games get televised. The cancelling of the first 5 rounds will cost a staggering $400m to the AFL. If a season is cancelled then the revenue lost is around $2bn. Fox and Murdoch don't have to pay if the games are not played. It is that simple.

If the AFL suffers these losses it would be technically bankrupt and would need to seek financing from the banks, or alternatively someone like Murdoch would take over ownership of the league. Either way it would survive, but the consequences would be a huge scaling down of the work the AFL does in the communities, clubs, academies and all grass roots. Effectively the AFL would become like the ARL, with little funding for anything. Player salaries would also be reduced making other sports more attractive for elite athletes. It would take many decades for the AFL to recover if at all.

I continue to be of the view that the teams should be completely isolated from the community and family, and that the full season be played and televised. This will protect the AFL who is then in a better position to support the clubs who will not have gate takings. I see the the NRL is exploring moving all 16 teams to a town in Queensland for this very reason, as they are in the same predicament.

I am not that sympathetic to the players being away from family for three months or so. Most of us have had to do so for our careers at some stage, whether fly in fly out or relocated. I know I have and I don't get to be a footy player.

My daughter, son-in-law and I were discussing this very thing last night and were pondering the feasibility of all the teams taken to live in different parts of Melbourne and assigned a training ground with all involved to be kept completely isolated for the next three weeks, then a 17 round competition is played with all games being at Marvel Stadium with no crowds. As the situation changes and the risks lower, then perhaps crowds could be re-admitted.
Not sure of the feasibility of that, but surely something along those lines would be a better result for all involved than the current no idea plan that seems to be the go.
Of course any player that does not wish to play under these circumstances is completely permitted to do so but by choosing not to play they forego their salaries.

I think the issue of playing is not really about players

if it’s just 44 players at a ground go for it

its coaches
Media
Attendants still needed without a crowd eg security
Medical staff
Cameraman etc etc etc

If they are dispersed, which I imagine they would be in a ground big enough to fit 100,000+, then they shouldn't be an issue.

I just think the optics of it are ******.

'Hey everyone, self isolate and be careful, it's more dangerous than you might think.. oh, ignore what the athletes on your screens are doing'

from the fox sports website:

All 18 clubs voted to play Round 1 as planned in a phone hook-up with AFL chief exeuctive Gillon McLachlan on Wednesday morning.

The CEOs unanimously supported the season starting on Thursday night, though foxfooty.com.au understands the Sydney Swans needed some convincing.
Just as its players had done with the AFLPA survey on Monday night, Swans chief executive Tom Harley asked some extra questions but ultimately voted in line with the 17 other clubs.

If Murdoch obtains ownership of the AFL, I'm out... immediately!

You would hope that there is some sort of clause in the agreements which stipulates that the tv rights apply to games played.....though It’s likely there would be some sort of minimum specified else they would be paying for nothing supplied which they wouldn’t do. The fact the AFL are pushing continuation suggests a serious exposure on breach of contract. Whats likely? The AFL may just push a 1 yr extension without further payment. Murdoch likely to demand a reduced price and preemptive extensions at discount because of world economy. Of course if that happened it filters to salary cap and salaries. I can’t see a takeover but afls negotiating position is weak. At days end I think the future option in favour of tv entities is most likely BUT the price is at issue. The insolvent position is massive leverage.

I wonder if payments were front loaded? if they were then Murdoch is in shit because he has an agreement with technically insolvent AFL where they could just walk and start afresh with new afl then putting tv rights out to tender again. Mmmmmmm.
