A fairly quick attempt of my idea.

At first I kind of liked the yoke coming down to the lion but the more I look at it the more I realise it doesn't work. When you look at the side of the jumper it doesnt look right at all.

It seems a bit long necked. Try bringing the head down.

Yeah, but you get the idea.

Liam Boy's modernized one is a bit more symmeterical than LeeARM's---the head too high.

But both of yours are better than the new logo. The original logo is also better than the new logo. The point being that it just doesn't look right to have the lion in that pose looking back at you, and ALSO in such facial detail with an otherwise detail-less rest of the lions body and ball etc.

There are very good even more detailed lion logos out there for sporting teams, but they have different poses---eg, a front on close-up of a lion leaping forward with paws steeled, leaping thru/over the font name of the team, etc.

But, if you're using a logo that is going to be placed prominently on the front of a jumper/product, those good detailed ones still don't work because of a too-detailed face floating in the middle of a plain jumper. See the Crows, Eagles, Hawks overly large overly-detailed clash jumpers of this year, or the Lions 2008 clash jumper having a full animal taking up both front and back of a jumper. All those uses don't work.

Instead, the very design of the Brisbane jumper previously was a logo big enough to replace the size of the FFC monogram. So the actual Fitzroy lion was suitable to put there in that size because of its simple drawing lacking detail and the pose of the head.

Example....compare a Ferrari logo, a Trans Am logo, or a logo on a bottle of beer/scotch.....drawn a certain detailless old world way that suits it being emblazoned on the actual product, doesnt DETRACT from the look of the product itself but blends in. Having too much detail on a non-detailed product (a plainly painted car or plainly printed non-gradient two-color scheme of a football jumper) spoils the look, takes the focus away.

Redone with some minor changes.

I thought the blue arm cuffs might link the blue from the back to the side and take away some gold as there's a bit too much.

I have to disagree with you there, LeeARM, about the current lion body. IMO it looks very cartoony and soft. No strong, bold edges; strange repetitive feet; shadow on the top but not the bottom :)confused:); and just generally 1 million miles away from Costa's brilliant attempt.

I like the smoothness, it beats the messy edges of the old design, I like consistency so I'm for having the same 3 and I like how the maroon shadow is used as line to define the shapes (as you said the light source is wrong so it could probably be improved but I think it's clever and more subtle that the old way of just cutting into the body with the lines).
While I think Costa has done a good job (definitely a better job than I'd be able to do) I think that his design has too many curves that make it look a bit... feminine, and I don't think the addition of gold shadow works great (it might just be the bright yellow that isn't working for me). While Costa has the right idea I just think he's changed the feel of the logo and it doesn't look as tough.

That's pretty much exactly how I felt about it.
