Talking to my mate around cricket sayings and how it allows great analogies for life.

Quick list as follows

On a sticky wicket - Things are going to go pear shaped
Coming in off the long run -Trying to ramp up the pace
Flat Track bully -Guy only performs when its easy
"Let my bat do the talking" -I'll show you the work, not talk about it
"let that one through to the keeper" - Won't touch that comment etc
"rotate the strike" - let your team members have a crack
"play with a straight bat" - Play it straight
"crack the ton" - 100 obviously
"I need to dig in" - Tubby Taylor style, stay at a job for an unreasonable amount of time inspite of difficulity
"I'll roll the arm over" - I'll have a crack but won't try too hard

Any others worth adding?

I use "off the long run", "sticky wicket", "roll the arm over" and "flat track bully" often, usually to the dismay of my mates who have no idea about cricket.

"Marvellous effort, that" has become a strictly cricket-related expression I think.

The quicker delivery, or the reverse slow ball as it's known these days.

"He's been castled"?

My mates and I now refer to bowling a, well, bouncer at your own feet as a 'Johnny' or a 'Howard'.

When I was about 20, I dated a girl who was considerably younger than me. My mate said to me once - "did you check if there was any grass on the wicket before you went into bat?" We still laugh about that.

Also in the old days of going out and picking up, the boys would always ask the next day whether you had worn the helmet or cap when you went into bat.

"cracked one through the covers" when you get a root
"hit middle stump" i.e Ballyntyne on the weekend
"its just not cricket" for something you percieve as wrong
"carried his bat" first at the pub and last to leave
"pulling up stumps" bed time
"well the pads are on and its time to have a bat" missus is on her rags
"leaking runs" pissed oneself
