been thinking about this for a few years to be honest, but only got reminded when clarke pointed to his bat.

is this because the bats are custom made? or because they are without a bat sponsor?

i also saw a 20/20 player with the stickers ripped off, but the shading where the sticker had been ripped off clearly showed the bat was a gray nicholls.

Most, if not all professional cricketers would have hand-made custom bats. There's not as many operators around anymore, but there's still a couple.

They are then sponsored by the mass-produced bat-makers who 'design' an imitation of their custom bat for sale to the public. In some cases those companies subcontract directly to the original bat-maker, but in many cases it's merely a "look-a-like".

If you can ever get hold of an "international players bat" you will see a 10%+ increase in your performance....seriously they are amazing. (or maybe I'm just REALLY bad at picking a store-bat).

Clarkes bat was blank because he didnt have a sponser. He pointed to his bat becuase he had small stickers of the McGrath foundation on it

Yeah, apparently his manager is negotiating a new deal with him, as he was with Slazenger. Most tailenders will have stickerless bats as I don't think they are allowed to carry a bat in with a logo if they aren't sponsored.

I went to primary and high school with Sehwags first cousin. Sehwag gave him one of his old international bats and I got to use it in the nets for 30 minutes.
I'm a natural number XI but it felt like every ball was hitting the sweet spot.

I remeber Steve Waugh went through a 'stickerless' stage with his bats once. I think it might have been an Ashes tour.

Aren't they all Millichamp bats covered with a sticker from whoever is sponsoring the particular individual?

I know Fisher makes a few of the distrct class and state cricket bats, if anyone's interested in getting a quality custom made bat. They're pretty cheap too!

Millichamp apparently has made bats for many international batsmen. Including Ponting and Hussey. He makes an awesome bat I use a screaming cat which is made by him you can't go wrong.

As pointed out earlier, basically all bats are made by a couple of companies and most good players get them made specially. Then the managers go out and get the best sponsor deal and thats the stickers they put on them.

Clarke has been with Slazenger all his career, but has now changed managers and his cotract has run out. No doubt he would have remained with slazenger if he had the same management but i think he will go elsewhere under new management.

According to reports, it was Slazenger who didn't want to take the contract up again.. unusual. Captain of his country and they won't sponsor him, just shows you the value of his stock with the Australian public.

They said they couldn't service his needs now he was Australian Captain.

According to Gilchrist (in his autobiography) they are all one type of bat (can't remember as it's been awhile since I've read it and cbf'd searching for it right now) and then they whack the sponsors stickers on.

I understand that it would be hard to refuse a million odd dollars (which is what Clarke is likely to get) but I'd love for him to stick with the sticker-less bat. He'd have no image problems whatsoever if he did that.

I think it was between his time with G&M and MRF. If I remember correctly he said that the right deal just hadn't happened so he was happy to wait. He had some good form and MRF - which are an Indian tyre company or something - wanted Waugh, Tendulkar and Lara all on board.

MRF = Madras Rubber Factory who do indeed make tyres. They were after what they believed were the three big names of the time and got them. Exclusively only sponsoring them. Now they sponsor Gambir:D

Apparently to be a sponsor you have to make a certain number of cricket bats for commercial sale. MRF did this through rebadging another suppliers bats and making them available for purchase. That's probably what Adidas, Reebok and Nike do too.

I'd say if tailenders don't have a bat sponsor, they (or their management) wouldn't want to be giving someone free advertising, as well as making potential other sponsors believe that they were already sponsored.

Clarke is entitled to seek new sponsorship, especially given (pre 329) he felt the commercial value of such a sponsorship had risen.

However, I do feel it was a bit of a slap in the face to Slazenger to immediately strip all his bats of their stickers the very day the deal expired and go out and bat cleanskin, given Slazenger sponsored him from the age of 12 with no guarantee of a commercial return in the future.

Slazenger, to their credit, regardless of what others might say, do support plenty of young cricketers they have no obligation to. I went to school with Shane Watson, and he and another bloke chased sponsorships when they were about 14. Most of the manufacturers offered them stickers and thats it, but Slazenger came back to both of them with full support, pads, gloves, 5 bats each, bags, training gear, whites etc. They got 5 bats a year from them for the past 3 years of high school.

Both of them were outstanding prospects, and after the first 2 years a few of the other blokes in our local Lord Taverners side (under age QLD rep cricket) chased manufacturers for deals. Slazenger knocked them back, but did supply both my school team and my Taverners team with a new communal kit which included multiple sets of pads, 6 bats, gloves etc.

This was great for me, as I was a genuine tail ender, so I got to use some quality new gear when I did bat, as our team kit was of elite standard. Prior to that I just grabbed old gear of the sponsored blokes!
