On Fox Footy’s First Crack Preview, St Kilda champion Leigh Montagna revealed the best and worst when it comes to delivery inside 50. This data assesses the percentage of kicks going inside 50 to a mark out of the top 50 kicks in the competition.

THE MONEY MEN
5. Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera

“This man will be getting a million dollars his next contract that’s for sure. He’s the only half-back flanker in the top 50 kicks inside 50 and he comes in at number five.”

4. Izak Rankine

“Your boy, Kingy! He does it differently to the others, he’s got that deft little touch, he can kick on the outside of the boot and kicks to advantage, he does it all different ways.”

3. Jason Horne-Francis

“Then there’s the Hornet, bursting out the front. 14 of his 42 kicks inside 50 have led to a mark. We know how great he is.”

2. Zach Merrett

“Surprised he’s not number one really… we’ve seen this all year, he’s probably my favourite kick in the competition. He’s the best kick in the competition.”

1. Isaac Heeney

“It’s Isaac Heeney who’s been brilliant. 12 of his 33 kicks, so almost 36% have been marked inside 50 and this is why he’s one of the best players in the competition.”

LEAVING MONEY ON THE TABLE
50. Christian Petracca

“The worst kick inside 50 in the competition is Christian Petracca, only one of his 45 kicks have actually been marked. It’s been a bit of a theme for Christian over the years unfortunately.”

49. Luke Davies-Uniacke

“Only two of his 33.”

48. Connor Rozee

“Interestingly, Connor Rozee, this is the third year in a row he sits in the bottom five for his kicks getting marked inside 50. He’s only had three of his 43 kicks that have actually led to a mark, but he is a long kick, and he does kick to advantage.”

47. Bailey Smith

“Same as Bailey Smith, they’re probably more the guys that tend to go for territory.”

46. Tom De Koning

“We’ll give him a bit of a break, because he’s a ruckman and a lot of those are just dump kicks inside 50 so he gets a let off.”

As a supporter of a team who has lost 3 out of 4 games in Ballarat, good riddance.
At least fans can plan ahead now, particularly as we are likely to be playing off for key ladder positioning in the final eight come that stage of the season. :) As a Ballarat resident, even I thought it was ridiculous when the Bulldogs played Port two weeks ago with the stadium at such a reduced capacity. It wasn't fair to the supporters of either team. Particularly Port, who were reserved less than 400 seats. I am glad that common sense has now prevailed and neither club will be at any disadvantage later this season.

I love the town of Ballarat, we're planning to visit again later this year on our way to Melbourne. But they seriously should not be playing AFL at that ground. Ridiculous that it's always interstate teams that get sent there.

The AFL schedule interstate teams to play the Bulldogs in Ballarat because they know that there is less demand for crowd spaces for opposition supporters. Plus it benefits Ballarat's economy with a $2.1 million injection from every game. A slice of that comes through the hospitality industry accommodating and catering to visitors. If it were just Melbourne teams, the Melbournians would simply turn up by car, park, watch the game and go straight home after the match. The Ballarat games are heavily sponsored by "Visit Victoria". Think of it having a similar effect for Ballarat's economy as what Gather Round has had to the immediate communities that have hosted AFL games in the Adelaide Hills. They are not going to play Adelaide off against Port Adelaide in the Barossa Valley or at Summit Park during Gather Round are they? Simply because Adelaide people would simply drive up, park, watch the game and go home again from areas which they have already likely visited many times before. Plus to host a game with the two SA teams in the hills would require a significantly larger temporary stadium that could seat 50k (+).

In that context, I doubt that anybody from interstate could now seriously complain that Mars Stadium is too small considering that eight interstate teams are allocated to play their games at two grounds in SA that have 10,000 capacity (or less) during the Gather Round. Once it is redeveloped and upgraded in twelve months time, Mars Stadium will effectively (in some ways) look and feel like a miniaturised version of the Adelaide Oval. The new stands will have similar roof lines and red brickwork, while the new standing area will be not unlike the grassed Northern standing area at Adelaide. The redevelopment will slightly increase capacity, offer more spectator comfort and better facilities. There will still be room for further improvements, but my understanding from having spoken with State Government officials and Ballarat Council reps at an information session last July is that further eventual expansion and improvements to the stadium's infrastructure and surrounds are being planned, but just not with this upgrade. :)

Certainly, the Ballarat people love hosting the interstate visitors and to date none have left city or the games in the RAT having felt unwelcomed. Most describe the experience of being at Mars Stadium during games as being more welcoming with a good-spirited friendly vibe among the crowd and officials than the more sterile conditions at Melbourne's two big stadiums or the heavily parochial atmosphere at Geelong's GMHBA Stadium.

Great info. Thanks for that. It's cool it does a lot for Ballarat because as mentioned, I love the town. I hadn't considered the tourism side.

Will the new stands have an effect on the wind do you think? The complaints are often that the crazy wind there make it very hard to display an AFL skill level.

Probably doesn’t relate to the bulldogs as much but we get not much time on the G so us playing Hawks in Tassie or Melbourne in Alice Springs just robs us of MCG games, then you combine trips like that with Ballarat and it gets to us!

I'd have no issue with games in places like Ballarat, Tassie etc. if they were shared around evenly. The fact some teams get lumped with those games every year is bullshit.

This!

It seems the only regional location where matches get shared around across the board is Darwin since Gold Coast started playing home games there, and Canberra.

Why should be always be the interstate teams that have to go to Ballarat, Launceston, Hobart etc year in, year out.

I understand that for a club like the Western Bulldogs or North they would not want to play a club like Collingwood or Carlton at their second venue, as playing those clubs at Marvel is probably important for them financially. Obviously we have a big fan base but we probably bring 5-10k to Marvel vs the 30+ the Pies can potentially bring.

I think the sensible solution would be that if a Melbourne club doesn’t go to Tassie, Ballarat or Darwin then they should have to travel to Adelaide, Perth, Sydney and Brisbane more frequently.

The problem with that is it would likely mean less games at the MCG for a club like us, which is also unfair.

This is one issue where I’m actually fairly sympathetic of the AFL as I think it’s virtually impossible to get the balance right (realistically I think cutting the number of teams in Melbourne is the solution but that won’t happen). This year we have 3 games at the MCG, and now only have to travel to Launceston, so I think it’s worked out okay for us.

Ten years time the picture will be Milera, Laird and Crouch with Laird taking the role of out of his depth midfield coach.

Then you’ll look back on this photo more fondly.
Laird the multiple AA and BnF winner, Crouch the BnF winner in a year we made a GF ??

I'd suggest they've achieved a bit in their careers, as much as I like the 3 in that picture.... they really didn't.
