I 'll start early this week. After listening to Phil Harper on 5AA today it appears that Bassett is almost certain to miss next weeks match against the eagles and Mark Stevens is expected to return. So here is my take on what our 24 will look like:

FF: _ 10. Matthew Bode _ 22. Ian Perrie _ 5. Ronnie Burns
HF: _ 40. Chris Ladhams _ 19. Mark Stevens _ 9. Tyson Edwards
_C: _ 11. Michael Doughty _ 20. Tyson Stenglein _ 24. Brett Burton
HB: _ 15. Jason Torney _ 16. Ken McGregor _ 34. Ben Hart
FB: _ 7. Nigel Smart _ 25. Ben Rutten _ 18. Graham John****
1R: _ 4. Matthew Clarke _ 36. Simon Goodwin _ 23. Andrew McLeod

Int: _ 35. Rhett Biglands _ 33. Brent Reilly _ 38. Jacob Schuback
_ _ _ 44. Nathan Bock _ 39. Martin Mattner _ 1. Andrew Crowell

IN: Stevens, Schuback
OUT: Gallagher, Bassett (inj)

Crowell keeps his spot for the sake of team balance. As you all know I am a fan of Gallagher but something tells me he will get dropped in favour of Schuback. If Stevens doesn't take his place we will need to rush one of the talls. Hentschel would be a good option if he is available but if not maybe Smith or Parker:confused:. Massie is also a bit of a smokey to be included into the side.

Thoughts??????

Pretty close to the mark Stiffy. Stevens to CHF allows Rutten to go back to FB where I think he will be more comfortable and at least physically a match-up for Troy Wilson.

Gallagher was very disappointing, although he only got very limited game time. Might be worth blooding Schuback as he won't go any worse, but Massie might be a real possibility as well if he has pulled up well this week.

Rutten would get smoked by Wilson on the lead, which is how Wilson does the most damage.

You might well be right as Rutten does lack pace. Who would be your choice to stand Wilson?

Rutten is not a man for Wilson. I think Smart will get the first crack at him.

Macca23, in case Stevo doesn't play who do we bring in instead of him. Do we go with Parker as FB and continue playing Rutten and Perrie as forwards (possibly play Rutten at FF and Perrie at CHF) or do we go with Matthew Smith who I think is not quite ready?????

Cheers;)

If Stevo doesn't come up, then it's either continue playing Rutten and Perrie as the key forwards or move Perrie to CHF and Bock to FF. Smarty will probably get first crack at Wilson and it wouldn't hurt to give Parker a try as the 3rd tall in defence if required. Smith isn't ready yet for a key position role.

Where is Hentschel when you need him??????;)

Likely looking team, after catching the ade/port match, from what little I know of the crows, thats pretty much exactly what I would have expected. I've heard some okay things about Schuback, do you think he'll play onball, or in the forward line?

Anyway, I'm going to post a preview as to how we match up against that team, stay tuned.

Schuback is capable of playing anywhere. He usually switches between forward line and midfield but he is also capable of playing as a defender. I don't know if he will play against u guys but I think he more than deserves to be given a chance.

Since we are allowed 2 extra players on the interchange bench because of the humidity and hot weather in Darwin here is my revised line up:

FF: _ 10. Matthew Bode _ 22. Ian Perrie _ 5. Ronnie Burns
HF: _ 40. Chris Ladhams _ 19. Mark Stevens _ 9. Tyson Edwards
_C: _ 11. Michael Doughty _ 20. Tyson Stenglein _ 24. Brett Burton
HB: _ 15. Jason Torney _ 16. Ken McGregor _ 34. Ben Hart

Int: _ 35. Rhett Biglands _ 33. Brent Reilly _ 38. Jacob Schuback
_ _ _ 44. Nathan Bock _ 39. Martin Mattner _ 1. Andrew Crowell
_ _ _ 21. James Gallagher _ 37. Trent Hentschel:eek: :D

Gallagher gets a second chance. I was very close on including Massie but decided to go for a tall for the sake of team balance. I went for a selection out of left field a bit in Trent Hentschel. I know Trent hasn't played or trained for about a month and its a huge punt. I think a couple of players will get a very limited game time. Hentschel being KP player gets the nod and since the game is payed in his home town I thought it would be a nice gesture by the club to select NT boys for this match if they are available. After all its only a pre-season. I think it would give Trent greater incentive to do well in his 1st game and in front of family and friends.

Thoughts??????

Not a big difference and I think that Massie is far more versatile as Hents is basically a forward.

The Crows also don't seem to want to play Rutten down back which is interersting.

Gallagher deserves another run, as by all accounts has been burning up the trackat training.

If Basett is out we need to add three players.

I would go with Schuback Massie and one other, which should be either Smith or Jericho in my view, just to get a look at them.

Hents is just recovered from injury and will no doubt play for the Eagles against West on Friday night at Ricmond

Wouldn't surprise me though if the Crows brought in Nelson for another go or even Shirley. Both would be a backward step in my view

Which reminds me perhaps Skippy should be given a chance. Only if we drop another onballer though.

Disagee with you there Jars. Massie is not a KP player he is more of a flanker. Hentschel is not basically a forward because I have seen him play a few games at CHB and did very well. Hentschel is capable of playing at both ends of the ground in key positions something Massie is not. But you are probably right Massie will get the not infront of Hentschel

Cheers;)

I have to agree with Stiffy that Hentschel and Massie are totally different type of players. Massie is a hard at it utility who is very good at ground level, while Hentschel is a high leaping high marking KPP (who is quite good for his size at ground level.)

However, it would be silly to bring Hentschel straight in after a period of injury, so I'm sure you're right that he won't be considered for the Crows this week.

On the basis that Bassett is out and Stevo is in, and there can be 2 more on the bench, my two would be Massie and Schuback.

If a 3rd player is needed I whole-heartedly agree about not wanting Nelson or Shirley. We've seen them before and know their limitations. I would much rather see Jericho or Smith get a taste of the big-time than watch these proven battlers.

I am an Eagles fan and have never seen (or more relevantly read) about Hentschel playing in defence. The kid really has a natural eye for goal and I think has amazing potential

Did he play in defence in the training trial matches?

I agree he is much more likley to play a KP than Massie, but my main point is Massie is more versatile and I think is the ideal replacement for Smart when he retires, as he can play short or tall (ish).

I don't have a problem giving Smith a go but Jericho is a big NO NO IMHO. Leth him make his senior SANFL Debut before he is given a chance at AFL. Remember what happened to Skipworth. He made his AFL Debut before his SANFL debut and after a few games his confidence suffered. Only towards the end of last year did he show the glimpses of what he is able to do. I say avoid temptation to give Jericho a game until 2004 unless we are hit with a lot of injuries which we are not.;)

I am sure I have seen Hentschel play as a defender as some stage. Cannot remember where but I am sure of it. You are right he is primarily a forward but he is capable of playing as a defender.

I also see Massie as a replacement for Smart when he retires because of his versatility and toughness but I was just making a point that for the sake of team balance we shoud have a ruckman and 2 KPP on the 8 man interchange and Massie IMHO is not a KPP. Having said that it is more than likely that Massie will get the nod for the eagles game. I just thought it would be interesting to have Hentschel make his debut in his hometown thats all.;)

He has not been ruled out but he will be tested during the week adn if its not 100% I think he will be rested hence the need for another KPP. Even if he is in for the sake of team balance I would have another KPP on the bench along with Bock and a ruckman in Biglands.

With the humidity & heat in Darwin, we would be better off stacking out bench with running players...hence Gags should get another chance being one of the fittest at the club.

If there is a spot to be "filled" ie just to give someone a run and see how he goes, I'd like to see Aiden Parker get a run.

Proven WAFL player and close to ready made defensive replacement should we need to cover for a long term injury in defence. But we don't know if he can cut it at AFL level. Only one way to find out in my opinion.

Aiden would be an OK selection. particularly if Stevo doesn't get up.

Could be handy too. He is a very negative type backman who spoils spoils spoils - doesn't like his opponent touching leather. Not the right type for Wilson but is very suited against a ruckman type resting in the forward pocket.

Ok here we go again:D . Considering that squad to face the eagles was named today here is who I would pick as my 26

FF: _ 10. Matthew Bode _ 22. Ian Perrie _ 5. Ronnie Burns
HF: _ 40. Chris Ladhams _ 19. Mark Stevens _ 9. Tyson Edwards
_C: _ 11. Michael Doughty _ 20. Tyson Stenglein _ 24. Brett Burton
HB: _ 15. Jason Torney _ 16. Ken McGregor _ 34. Ben Hart
FB: _ 7. Nigel Smart _ 25. Ben Rutten _ 18. Graham John****
1R: _ 4. Matthew Clarke _ 36. Simon Goodwin _ 23. Andrew McLeod

Int: _ 35. Rhett Biglands _ 33. Brent Reilly _ 21. James Gallagher
_ _ _ 44. Nathan Bock _ 39. Martin Mattner _ 1. Andrew Crowell
_ _ _ 26. Mark Bickley _ 13. Matthew Smith.

There is some doubt about Stenglein's availability. If he doesn't come up Shirley is the likely replacement. However, I would much rather select Begley instead of Shirley and give Mattner a crack as our tagger, probably on Cousins.

Thoughts??????
