Jeez, no way to end a season for the kid. Is harsh. At least a couple of weeks too long.

Is gonna burn him all off season, and I have no doubt he's gonna come back a whole lot better next year. Reckon he has been great at time, solid at others, but building nicely all the while.

Some lazy, sloppy aggressive acts, which I see as both good and bad. He's really gotta concentrate, and focus if he wants to punish and hurt someone. He is probably one of the few in our team that has the body, the aggressive intent and hopefully soon - the nous to do it. He goes looking for it, and he will have plenty of opportunity to deliver some pain as an enforcer if he was a little smarter about it.

Cry me a river that it's outside the rules of the game or whatever. There's plenty going on outside the laws, traditions and spirit of the game, that is promoted and accepted as the new normal. There's still room for rough stuff, and I accept - if its sloppy you wear the weeks. We still need an enforcer and Howe is shaping nicely for my money.

Howe has just gotta go about it smarter no doubt, but hope no one tries to temper his aggression. (Actually wish it'd rub off on some others. Looking at you TOB!)

2 weeks for the punch is pretty fair. It was silly and that's a justifiable punishment

HOWEVER,

Either I was out of the room or not concentrating, but I can't for the life of me remember the alleged trip. I remember the Carlton fella walking through the change rooms gingerly but don't recall the actual moment

Anyone got a link for a video of the incident?

What a shit show.

FMD, 3 weeks for incidental contact below the knees....all because of the outcome.

What did we even argue? Bloody hell.

This game is so hard to watch when nothing can be considered an “accident”.
I've read many posts saying our plea was guilty. Is this absolutely true?

If so, it's incompetence. After the leg beak, the ONLY possible defence was that contact was completely accidental. Careless was always going to go for weeks. You don't need a law degree to know that.

Someone please tell me we didn't plead guilty.

Sorry boss, but you already know the answer.

Howe retaliated to a Howe retaliated to a punch with a punch, it happened to connect to a glass jaw and he dropped like a sack of shit (either on purppunch with a punch,it happened to connect to a glass jaw and he dropped like a sack of shit (either on purpose to milk a free or because it was a well timed great punch or a missed timed punch that connected perfectly by mistake.)
Either way its not a negative reflection on his character, it happens every week, it just doesnt hit the sweet spot of the chin or the media agenda every week.

It should have been 1 week or a few grand fine

Exactly, but the two punches Cripps threw first were not shown on any video clips I have seen when the biased AFL media replayed the incident. Howe deserved a week, and as for th tripping, well that was just b/s.

He got a week for knocking Shane Edwards out in a bump in 2015. Should have got at least 2 for that one
Still... he's dodged a lot of bullets our old Buddy.

Sack that lawyer.

Our legal team has been suspect for a long time, but this is the absolute nadir.

Pretty sure Buddy would of got no more than a fine.
From a quick google search, the last time he was suspended was in 2013. He missed 2013 Qualifying against Swans.
Surely that can't be right.

Nope that’s dead on. Every incident since he’s donned the red and white he’s copped a fine at worse. The difference in his treatment at the tribunal/MRP is starkly clear.

Exclusive footage of O'Farrell giving his closing arguments:

I really don't know why we bother to turn up to these things.

“Match Review Officer Michael Christian had graded the trip as careless conduct, with severe impact to the body, meaning the penalty exceeded the AFL's classifiable offence table.

In arguing the Tribunal should uphold Christian's verdict of a severe impact grading, and subsequently a minimum three-match ban, the AFL's legal counsel Jeff Gleeson QC said "the realistic worst-case scenario happened" in terms of Fisher breaking his leg.

However, Howe's representative Peter O'Farrell countered by arguing that Fisher's injury shouldn't be the sole determinant of the impact. He instead suggested his client might not have even been reported had Fisher not been injured.

O'Farrell subsequently argued that the Tribunal should change Christian's grading to either medium impact (leading to a fine) or high impact (a one-match ban).”

Just can’t understand why he just didn’t start with it not being a trip and work from there

Okay so 3 weeks for an incidental trip, how many did Duncan get for this? I must have missed it, 4 or 5? Oh you mean he got nothing, not even a fine? Okay carry on...

Just another example of how pathetic the AFL is, they do not punish people for doing the wrong thing they just throw weeks out if someone gets hurt. I am not even so much worried about the loss of Howe, just angry over how BS the decision is.

the edit at the end makes it look worse than the first at normal speed footage, almost like they edited it to look worse and more deliberate than it actually was...

Looks to me like Howe was lucky he didn't get injured himself when Fisher falls across his leg. For mine, Howe's leg is splayed out like that in what the AFL has decided is a trip because Fisher's momentum has pushed Howe's leg out and away from his body. Just doesn't look like a deliberate trip to me, not even one of those shoot-the-legs-out-to-stop-a-player-as-a-reflex accidental trips. Can't believe they didn't try to argue there was no actual trip instead of the fiasco we've been told they argued instead.

Wow wee the so called trip gets more than the punch? I know which one looked worse. Doubt you’d find a doctor to back up the claim that because the bone broke then the impact has to be severe. Someone with bad Osteoporosis only has to sneeze to break ribs.

Don't think I'll ever understand how that was deemed as severe impact

The INJURY was severe, not the IMPACT; and the blurring of these two very distinct factors will always lead the tribunal to hand out incorrect or unjustifiable punishments.

It did seem like a clumsy action and probably justified a one week suspension, based solely on the action, NOT the outcome; but 3 weeks? Give me a spell.

Of course we all know that the system is inherently flawed, but it isn't changing, at least in the foreseeable future, and players, clubs and the public alike will have to continue copping poor calls like this one on the chin. Just one of the many holes the AFL are digging for themselves

Outrage OUTRAGE!!!.... Come on... watch All of the footage.

Howe threw out a swinging leg which hit Fishers leg and BROKE it. Fact!... I saw deluded partisan people saying Howes leg was stationary. It was Not !

Come on guys, he threw a leg out and tripped a player with chalk bones. That is what happened. I concur with people thinking the impact seemed less than hard but he was dumb to throw the leg out.
The most important thing is that Dan Howe is getting a lesson. If he is told he did nothing wrong, he will learn nothing!

3 weeks is right.

And the punch: as a previous poster wrote: dumb dumb dumb

5 week: = Worpel stays in the team and a chance for Cousins to again show his talent as a blocker for the team.
All good as far as I am concerned.
