See, this is the tactic many of the Andrewsstans use so effectively. Andrews' rhetoric on his opposition is that they're irrelevant, but his social media foot soldiers will blame anything he does on the influence of a party he considers irrelevant and a media he doesn't engage with.

In any reasonable analysis, you can't have it both ways. If there is very few examples of bad debt, the decision to cut this service is indefensible. But this is a government happy to slug a private school that ONLY educates special needs kids because its fees are high. Why would you want your kids in the public system if Andrews is removing support and you have the means to look after your kid in the way you see suitable? Most of the commentary about private schools completely ignores the basic human compulsion to use every reasonable means to make things better for your own children, a compulsion that is not learned behaviour but human nature - like the belief that if you work harder, you should earn more.

The Andrews Government is solely to blame for this, and governments ALWAYS need to endure a higher level of scrutiny and accountability than oppositions because they are the government. Don't do as they say when they say "look over there".

I'm not suggestion the Libs are making ground. The Vic Libs are dead in the water. Their entire platform seems to be 'we're just like labor, but not as corrupt'. In a fight against a party that lost 6.2% of their 1st pref vote, the libs managed to...lose 0.71% of their own first pref votes! If they were a serious opposition Dan wouldn't have done nearly as well as he did...but they're not.

But back to the ALP....6.2% 1st pref and 2.3% 2PP swing against, and they still won a seat. Think about that for a while. I'm not suggesting anything untoward (cough), but gee those redistributions worked in the ALP's favor didn't they?

I think the last platform was "We're just like Labor, but corrupt in a different way" Why else would they have Matt Guy as their leader?

I think there will be a big swing against ALP in Vic at the next election, but it's a long way away, so unsure if that swing will be further splintering to independents, Greens or back to the Libs. All the Libs have to do is not look stupid and they hubris of this Andrews Govt will bring it down.

I'm not sure they're upsetting a lot of people who weren't perennially upset, but I'm also not sure who is still 100% onside with the Vic ALP at the moment (other than those perennially onside with them).

I don't think they are a big deal, and the cost makes it very hard to excuse the expense, but in end it's a multi-sport event where a number of people who don't get to the Olympics are able to compete and get a lot out of doing so.

I am asking how is it bad, not how is it "meh".

Valid question. Until Dan cancelled the 2026 Games you would not have thought support for the Commonwealth Games went down party lines, but here we are, and we have posters applauding the demise of what is the world’s second largest multi-sports event, and the fourth most watched global broadcast sports event, featuring athletes from 71 nations and territories.

Australia can still become a republic and remain part of the Commonwealth. 36 out of the 56 Commonwealth member states are republics.

What impact will the demise of the Commonwealth Games have on our Olympics success? Athletes are already saying it will impact because the Comm Games have served as a very useful springboard and because it is an event held 2 years before the Olympics, it has served as a tune up for our athletes

That's fine - it shouldn't be a priority. Lots of nice things should not be priorities for governments. But the chief cheerleader up there is banging on about the Canadians finally seeing the light on something intrinsically bad.

i don't think there is a country in the world that could host the commonwealth games that would financially be in a position to do so unless they are happy to throw money away on something with very little prestige

the reality is that commercially it's not a good investment

politically it's not a good investment

so why would anyone touch it right now
