David Warner

You'd like to think he has learned some serious lessons during his ban, as there is no way Australia are winning either of the big two prizes on offer in England later this year without significant contributions from both him and Smith.

Bigger. Looks like he's injured. So now he and Steve will both be coming back into the wc squad on the back of less than ideal preparation. Did we piss off the cricket gods or something? Deadset we are getting smashed on and off the ground

If he was Asian we'd be making bookiie gags. What a shame of a competition, these Mickey Mouse T20 tournaments, BBL included, are doing more harm to the game than good.

Yeah that was my first thought as well lol..

I was like.. Bangladesh premier league --> Chris Gayle bowling at the death --> Warner batting right handed.. yeap not suspicious at all:p

But then, I do remember Gayle bowling at the death a few times from memory before.

But gee he has some ability does David Warner, especially in the shortest format of the game. That load up for the straight six was almost reminiscent of Dhoni in his peak, when his bat swing used to be like that of an axe wielding woodcutter.

I would take a right handed David Warner batting for us in the world cup instead of Dhoni now lol.

I just hope that next time that shark-faced aggro w**Ker faf doo plessis gets caught breaking the rules on the field like he has done three times before, they throw the book at him like Warner and give him a years holiday
Warner didn't get suspended for ball-tam...

Oh, nevermind.

Fox sports article says he injured his elbow and will be flying home.

Said him in Smith are in danger of missing the world cup because of injury. The first game isn't for 5 ******* months.
Yeah they are no chance of missing the WC, should get a few of the ODIs beforehand in too. Not ideal, but they are at worst 6 week injuries and then rehab, which won’t take over 3 months!

Yea yea I know. Lied about it and brought the game into disrepute blah blah blah. But old faf is like a politician. Knows how to get away with it. Just keeps on smiling and being polite and gets away with everything

I always have a bit of a laugh when people say these guys got long suspensions because they lied about it. Name one person guilty of ball tampering, and there have been many, who came out and admitted it straight away ..... (sound of crickets chirping in the back yard).

Tbh how f**king stupid was Bancroft?. No way did Warner ask him to pull out the sandpaper on field and scratch the ball. Surely the memo was to scratch it up with some minute amount of sandpaper on his finger dressings. Surely. Or were they both that monumentally idiotic to think waving a big chunk of paper around and holding the ball at the same time wasn't going to get noticed? Can these blokes read and write?

This issue is well covered in Rod Marsh's book. He said all Bancroft had to do is say no, and it would have been enough for Smith and Warner to realise it wasn't such a bight idea. He went on to talk about the past Australian captains who seemed to have cracked under pressure after reaching 30+ Tests as captain. Interesting theory.

Marsh laid the blame at the feet of the Argus Review in 2011 and our obsession with the "win at all costs" attitude it engendered, and how the board felt it necessary for the ridiculously long suspensions to cover up for their own ineptitude. An interesting read.

The entire incident can basically be traced back to the moment Sutherland and Howard stormed into the dressing room and announced "we don't pay you to pay, we pay you to win". The actions and message from leaders sets the tone for everyone beneath endorsing such bullshit. Yes it's easy (and partially correct) to blame Smith for taking the easy option and turning a blind eye, Warner for coming up with the idea and asking a junior player to do it and finally Bancroft for not saying no but ultimately the behaviour has stemmed from poor leadership and direction from the top. For them to come down with such a penalties to unsuccessfully try to appease their key sponsors (a bank and a management fund who ironally as it turned out in the commission had also demonstrated evidence of widespread toxic "win at all costs culture") by isolating the behaviour to the playing group and failing to acknowledge that it had stemmed from the organisation at large was another cop out.

What an absolute crock. Cricket Australia gave a bunch of self entitled idiots living in a bubble too much scope. Then panicked when the team went downhill. But they did NOT force them to cheat. Smith was trying to get some stolen redemption when he came out with that dross. He either needs to cop his punishment and stop with the pr bs or appeal. Cos it looks like he hasn't learned a thing. When Dave Warner has you covered in the 'shut ya gob and wait it out' stakes you must be a shit bloke

Well, the general noise is that Warner walks straight back into the side.

Personally I never want to see the little tool represent Australia again, but what is the consensus view?
It's probably fair to say that he walks straight back in and then straight back out if he struggles to score runs. He needs to make serious runs year in year out to stay cos the media will be on him

He walks straight back in and will be welcomed with open arms

Done his time.....back in

All batters need to score runs not only Warner

In an ideal world you'd have batters in the side performing and more in the Shield making mountains of runs, and you'd say he has to earn his spot back.

As things actually are, he clearly should be right back into the side when available. His continuing place would then of course be contingent on making runs and being able to behave himself within the team environment. I'm not saying he has to be best mates with everyone or even like them or be liked. Just has to find a way be professional (as everyone does, I mention it just because it might be more of a challenge with Warner).

And it's not a moral thing for me. He gave up his spot in the side through his actions, and so ideally he should be expected to earn it back through the FC competition. As we are clearly not in an ideal world in regards to the national team though, he probably just comes straight back in as soon as his suspension is up.

So you would prefer we abandon the ideal of selecting Test teams based on ability and the best 11 players available? The past 9 months have shown us how well that works.
