My understanding if we do then we have to pay him until he is employable again on the terms of his current contract... we must also cover his medical bill etc...

A very expensive decision that could cost the club close to 400k if you count the money for his list replacement..

Much cheaper to sign him up on a cheap 2 year deal... 250k over 2 years sounds fair.

This is my understanding of the situation... if others know more please feel free to comment.

Does that have to happen to every other club eg. North and Nathan Thompson?????

If we HAVE to put him on minimum wage for 1 year.

He injured his knee in the VFL so we'd have to pay him VFL match payments for each game that he would be unavailable due to the injury ($595 per game). The AFL Players Association medical insurance covers his medical expenses. See clauses 11.2 and 11.3 of the players CBA

So if he missed 22 games we would have to pay him about $13,000. Unless another club drafted him, then we wouldn't have to pay anything.

I doubt thats all we'd have to pay him if we delisted him, as thats just damn cruel.

I mean why put your body and livliehood on the line when a knee snap can see you going from 2-300 K a year to being paid out on your contract for 13k?

That surely cannot happen.

My example was assuming he doesn't have a contract for next year. If he is contracted for next year then the club would have to pay out his contract.

There are different provisions if a player is unable to ever play footy again.

that sounds about right to me also - but lets hope our club is better than that.

i hope petts gets delisted - then signed to coburg, with richmond covering his game and medical cost - and petts also obtaining a job at the club somewhere.

if they can secure him to earn at least $50,000 next year, and pay and help with his medical and rehab - and also giving him an outlet (coburg and the vfl) to hopefully re-ignite his career. - that is all they should feel they need to do

that would be more than fair and just :thumbsu:

If he was a better player we wouldnt even be considering delisting him, even without the knee injury.

Fact is, he was on the chopping block after a terrible year before the injury. Everyone is forgetting this. He was probably a more likely than unlikely chance of being delisted. So in reality, that $13,000 is $13,000 more than he would have got had he not got injured. Also, how likely was it that anyone would have picked him up had he not been injured, given he played 6 relatively poor games this year.

My understanding was that he was uncontracted at the end of this year (i recall reading in the Herald Sun an interview with him after he had done his knee). I too would have thought regardless of his knee injury or not, he was going to be in this position at this stage regardless.

Pettifer owes us money for masquerading as an AFL footballer for the last 7 years. If he hasnt set himself up by now he only has himself to blame.
I feel sorry for him only in one sense - every kid dreams of playing AFL football - his is over but he probably played more than he should of so he can be pleased with that.

Nathan Thompson resumed playing.. so different

Ok the $595... is fair enough as match payments, but he would be on a base salary.. which could be what he is entitled to as well. If it was so cheap to release him then we would have not publicly announced we would keep him so early.

fairly sure Freo would want him...they are like a drop in centre...accepting anyone that comes their way

I'm fairly sure if we had offered Royce Vardy for Pav they would have said yes...and given us a draft pick as well

Couldn't see anything in the CBA about base payments (unless I'm missing something) except in the case the player cannot play again in any league, in which case the club would be up for 50% of base payments for one year. I guess its all based on a player being able to sign a contract with another club to start playing as soon as the injury heals, either at AFL or lower level. Players who are delisted with no injury get nothing.

I wasn't aware the club has announced they were keeping him.

Good post:thumbsu:I particularly agree with the bolded section.

hes a hack. Pathetic attitude. Get rid of him. Feel players who I believe give their all ala JON should be given 2nd chances but lazy, half-arsed bums like Pettifer must go

Doesnt mean he cant go out and get a job like a normal person.

Get a job earning 60k a year plus the 13k from footy, plus previous paypackets, decent living right there.

Surely were not going to pay him 2-300k for nothing,

Why not we have been paying him for nothing for the last seven years, so why should 09 be any different!!!!

Could not agree more. I said to someone the other day that Pettifer plays for himself and not the side? Does anyone else here agree with that
