Brown is a required player and under contract so we need to play hard ball.
Here is how I'd like to see trade week(s) work out:

Stevens ---> WB for Pick #28

Brown + Pick #28 ---> St Kilda for Pick #12/13 and Jamie Cripps

Pick 18 ---> Collingwood for Wellingham and Pick #40

Pick #40 + Josh Fraser compensation pick ---> Essendon for Tayte Pears

So in summary:
OUT: Stevens, Brown, Pick #18, Josh Fraser compensation pick
IN: Wellingham, Cripps, Pears, Pick #12/13

And then in the draft:
Pick #12/13 (Use on best available MID/KPD)
Pick #39 (Best available MID/KPD)
Lynch compensation if 3rd rounder don't use, if 2nd rounder (Pick #40) use on Best available KPD/MID

Unless we end up with pick 13 by trading Brown, I would just flat out refuse to trade him. He is contracted and very much required.

Furthermore, he seems to be the kind of bloke that would just cop it on the chin, put his head down and work harder.
Playing the devil's advocate here, but I don't think Saints would give up pick 13 for Brown. As with Stevens, people are essentially valuing Brown based on potential rather than his actual playing history. Just because he has the specs to replace Glass doesn't mean he will step up to the plate when the time comes. One might argue he still hasn't proven his worth at our club.

This is purely because he is behind Glass and Mackenzie.
His WAFL form strongly suggests he will step up to the plate.
Plus he is contracted so West Coast can demand anything they like.

Whoa, trade 2.5 weeks just got interesting.

They don't offer that, I don't see what they have to entice us.

Cripps and their second pick won't be enough.

I do hear what you are saying, but there's 40-odd players on a list, half(ish) are going to miss out on selection every week. And in Brown's case, he was fighting for one or two positions, one an AA captain and the other who has developed more/been less injury prone over the journey. So he knows he will have to wait, in another year or two when Glass goes he's possibly straight in there. Or on the other hand, work harder to replace EMac, or the third option is work on another part of your game (i.e. there was talk of him playing forward again next season).

Maybe all this seemed too hard? Or maybe he wants to go home, who really knows!

he has tried for 6 years to break into the team. how long do you keep trying for before you look elsewhere? he wants to play. not be a backup. he doesnt give a shit about principles that he should fight forever. noone will remember him for that. facts are he will never be ahead of mackenzie and glass. thats not fighting for position. these guys will need to drop off for him to get a game. saints give him playing time. that trumps over being a backup forever.

The Saints must be fairly confident he will realize this "potential" if they are willing to offer a 3yr deal. The same with Stevens, if there are 4-5 clubs interested as reported, then they accept there is potential for him as well.
WC actually hold the aces for both Brown and wellingham - makes a change

He would once Glass retires, within the next year or two, or if there was an injury to either player.

Injuries and poor form restricted him to 51 games in six years, another year as a backup potentially playing 10 games or so wouldn't hut him. If he got a game (and he would at some point) it would be up to him to cement it.

But as I said, I do hear your points and I do concede that he obviously doesn't want 10 games, he wants 22, and good luck to him. I just think if he is prepared to leave when there is light at the end of the tunnel, then let him leave.

We need a first rounder for Brown.

Hoping we have balls this year to not get "Ebert-ed".

If we get 12 or 13 off the Saints for Brown, could we package 12 & 17 and try upgrade it for a Pick 4 or 5 or 6? High end midfield talent is what we need.

That's why I don't think a deal will get done. To put it simply, there is no way Brown is worth a first round pick. He's worth more than Cripps (like the Saints supporters are suggesting), but no-where near a first round pick.

That's why trades aren't done on BF. Both teams have ridiculous expectations and are unwilling to compromise. Luckily, I'm sure our respective clubs are a bit more reasonable.

mitch brown to hawthorn for pick 21 and shane savage, then give 21 to collingwood for wellingham. keep 17, and offer second rounder for pears or lynch compo. Then in the team we get two mids, and another key defender.

Would be a great acquisition for Hawthorn.
Would Hawthorn offer that up for Brown?

dont know, but he could be the difference for hawthorn and a premiership. Exactly what they need and they offered something like pick 16 and 34 for gibson.

So who should be targeting as another key back?

A few are saying Tayte Pears, and I wouldn't mind him, but I have no idea as to whether he is even considering coming back here.
