Rodda would be handy as a WA junior state defender ( FB ) , probably in our pick range also .

The AFL site has WCE getting a second round pick for Lynch , maybe even mid second round not end of second round . If WCE were lucky on Friday in this regard about pick 32 would be well recieved .

I still don't get why we didn't rookie Nelson last year. Players who were rated early, but fall down the draft order due to sickness/injury or discipline issues are the guys we should be targeting with our rookie picks. High risk, high reward.

I kept hoping we would pick him up last year, I simply do not understand why he was passed over.

My guess is maybe because he would play a similar role to Masten or Newman but the kid has pace, can win the ball and alright skills.

Even if we would be stocking up on a similar type surely sometimes ability trumps positional needs.

Get Nelson, before Freo does.

I reckon we burn more late picks as a proportion than any other big side.

Rookie or late in the draft, we seem to just chuck them around like confetti.

In today's hyper competitive environment the overt long shot, or super high risk possibly high reward type picks are just poor list management.

Some teams like Collingwood, Geelong or even Fremantle seem to have a decent strike rate with late picks, or rookie selections.

If we want to be the best then I think our recruiting department either needs a beef up or some changes. Collingwood turned a rookie selection into a first round pick, we burnt two rookies only a year after being drafted.

But Cox and Priddis are massive. There aren't many teams who can boast about players of such quality.

We are either boom or bust with our picks.

Just looking at the number of 2nd/3rd round picks from the last few years that may end up busts worries me a little.

Financially, we are in the same bracket as a Collingwood, not a NM. More money for scouting/recruitment staff, development coaches, equipment and on and on. Teams like Sydney, Geelong and Collingwood are renowned for their excellent strike rate, as should we be. Not burning picks like a Melbourne or Western Bulldogs.

I actually think it's because we have taken a little more risk with our picks than we would have a few years ago, where we were notorious in taking the safe pick, now we don't so much. Just my interpretation on what has been happening, but certainly not enough to worry me.

Yep, last year Nelson was a safe, boring and vanilla pick while Papertalk fit the profile of a high athleticism, high upside player. Nelson took his game to another level and completely bought in to what they were doing down at West Perth while Papertalk floundered in a professional system.

When you have a look, most teams are hit and miss with the draft. Sure we have picked some duds but so have others. We have drafted some real quality with Naitanui, Shuey, Gaff, Darling etc I think people are looking at our recent rookie drafting because of Freos couple of successes with it of late. We have had guys like Cox, Priddis, Lynch etc over the years and no doubt will come up with the odd player in the future through the rookie draft.

His speed and agility where questioned last year by a few no nothing's, when really his only issue is his size.

So was size the only reason he was overlooked? How do you rate his disposal; he did well in the kicking tests, I know, but not having seen West Perth this season does it stand up in game situations?

His disposal is Good but not elite imo. Definitely not something that should of stopped him getting drafted. I really feel like there is something we don't know about with him that the recruiters do, wouldn't have a clue what that would be. For not even one club to give him a rookie shot just baffles me.

I'm fairly certain we were one of the clubs that asked for him to go to the combine. One of my uni friends is close with him and reckons West Coast and Geelong are circling.
