What are the chances of Brown leaving the club but not going to St Kilda? everyone's talking about Saints, they did want him of course but I would have thought Melbourne or Western Bulldogs would be keen on a player like Brown. Collingwood as well, got his brother there and if they want Reid to be a fulltime A. Hunter swingman they might like another Brown
pantskyle won't be too keen if he doesn't go to a vic club ;)

I'd be surprised if Brown was only willing to go to St. Kilda. The issue seems to be playing time and he would be able to get that at a number of clubs. St. Kilda also aren't particularly well resourced and look unlikely to move back up the ladder in the near future. If he asks for a trade we should be in an OK position.

Who knows.

But looking at the WA group there is a lot of players in the 175cm - 182cm bracket and a bit of strength in 190cm + players. So id take some bigger bodied midfielders if possible now.
that's what I was wondering, picking the sort of players this year that we may not be able to pick up this year

will waterman be our first pick next year?

I think we will get Waterman for a second round pick as I dont think any other club will nominate him.
At this stage he is a top 5 for next year.
He missed the entire preseason this year with injury, this next prreseason he will do with WCE, so
Iam sure our professional fitness staff will look after him well, and help him have a huge year next year.

What excites me about Alec is his low centre of gravity, he can develop that more and get quicker and more powerful, its
already part of the reason he is such a elite kick under pressure he's able to stand up in a tackle and still deliver the ball
lace out, few young players have that ability.

He a very exciting package that hopefully keeps developing.

If you could compare Alec with any current player, who would it be?

Nothing personal, but isn't this a contradiction? You say he is possibly a top 5 pick but no-one will nominate him in the first round?

What do people think of Tom Ledgar from the Saints? I know he is small ( 1.78m) and 78kg but he isn't getting many games for Saints and think he would come real cheap.

If we got him as Steak knives with the Brown trade I'd be happy but under any other circumstance, no, absolutely not.

The only "father/son" pick that was in the top 10 that I can find since the bidding system came in is Joe Daniher to Essendon last year. Would young Waterman be deemed to have as much potential as Daniher was said to have had ?

Depends of the other clubs. For example many thought that other clubs would put a bid for Viney last year, forcing Melbourne to use their first round pick for him. But ultimately nobody put a bid and the Demons got him for peanuts.

It is looking like North will using their first round pick for their F/S ( Forgot the guys name)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought clubs bid their second round pick, which is why Melbourne had to match it with their second round pick if they wanted him (he was taken at pick 26). Not exactly peanuts, but certainly less than he was worth.

Similar scenario might play out for WCE, guess it will depend on how Waterman develops over the next 18 months.

And on where we finish in 2014 - if we made the prelims then our first pick would be somewhere in the teens and we might have to use it on Waterman, but if we finished bottom 5 and get a top 5 pick then we might get away with using our second-rounder.

Isn't it governed by what other clubs bid? Ie. it doesn't matter where a club finishes, if Club A bids a second rounder, Club B who is entitled to the father-son selection just needs to match that with their second round selection, regardless of where that selection is?

I didn't think it mattered where you finished for some reason...

That is pretty much it it just keeps going till you have to use you earliest pick and it doesn't mater if that happens to be pick 4 or pick 45. It just depends on how interested the other party is.

No, Club A bids whatever pick they have and Club B has to match it with their next pick.

So in the Viney example, I think Port Adelaide bid their first round pick (pick 7), but Melbourne didn't have to use their first-round pick (pick 3), they got to use their second-round pick (pick 26 or so).*

*Melbourne had a couple of compo picks as well - picks 4 and 13 - which they didn't have to use either because they don't count apparently.

So on that scenario, Port bid their first round, but as the Dees finished below (ie. higher draft pick) then their next available pick was 26 (excluding compensation picks)

As an alternate example, if Melbourne finished higher than Port is 2012, then they would have had to pay pick 8-17, but becuase they finished lower, their next available selection after pick 7 was 26...

Yeah that's correct. That's why there was buzz that WS or GC would bid with 1 or 2 to force Melbourne to pick Viney with 3. That is, to screw them a little bit.

Should be noted that FS bidding is done before the trade period opens meaning whichever pick is nominated, it's locked away and you cannot trade it away in order to make your FS pick a lower round selection.

Sorry for the intrusion but just having a look at Fraser McInnes and the possibility he comes down to Melbourne for more forward opportunity considering you have a killer tall forward set up currently.

Seems he's out of contract (no real report on it) but also that many of you are hoping he gets groomed into a CHB much like Lachie Henderson. What would realistically get him to be traded? The only WA tall defender we have is Simon White who wouldn't come close to replacing Glass and Yarran/Garlett are too high a price IMO.

Would a early 20s pick do it? (even though he was a late 20s pick himself).
