Did Carlton made the right decision choosing Voss over Ross?

We have no good half forwards and the small forwards are either too young/not good enough on a consistent basis. Hollands and Cowan are going ok but shouldn’t be walk up starts and we still don’t have a good ruckman.

Losing all our running half backs kill us as we compliment the slowness around the ground with the run generated by Saad, Doc and Williams.

We have too many permanently injured players on our list as well.
Yeah it's a shame for you guys that Fisher hasn't really come on as he looked good early and exactly what you need

Blues will have to get smart with their recruiting this year. Melbourne were very good a few years back when they saw some obvious deficiencies in their list and found some important players without breaking the bank. Not sure the Blues would have the cap space for a big fish

Did SOS run Saints drafting this year? Because the Pou looks pretty handy
no arrived 3 odd months later Toce is the recruiter

Best-22 is a wasted stat really. In majority of lists, after player 15 or so it’s really a case of ‘throw a blanket’ over players 16-26, depending on form, fitness, the role they are playing, team balance etc..

So it really should be more “How many bonafide ‘walk up starts’ - guys that play seniors no matter what when available, are missing?

Coffield and Billings are not locked in the side no matter what. Webster is borderline. King definitely yes.

Missing players 16-22 doesn’t hurt you too badly. Missing lots of ‘walk up starts’ does.

Webster is easily best 22, played 20 games in 21/22 and 1st 2 this year, the only reason he's missed is because of an injury
Coff and Jack have had a tough 2 years with injuries
Coffield was the leading intercept marker in 2020 20 more than Wilke and Howard
Billings was huge at the beginning of 21. 4th in the b&f end of rnd 7 before injury

all 3 are best 22, the relevant question is, who comes out for them and that's a far harder one to answer as the side is doing ok atm

Voss seems like a nice bloke but is a dimwit.
Lyon is sharp but ultimately destroys your club, look at the state he left Freo .
Pick your poison.

What about the way Clarkson left Hawthorn? The list was pretty stuffed. Or the position that Leon Cameron left the GWS list in? Not great. I’d argue that that’s what happens when a coach has been in the job for a while and moves on.

Yes, Ross didn't want to go through the application process. It would be pretty negligent for an organisation to hire an individual who thinks they are above the club's processes.
I would have thought so, however after approx 7 months in, I am unsure if it would have necessary. Everyone would have known what u get with Ross. Him changing and being more flexible than 2009 has been a bonus

Nope I don't.
I think teams work you out by that stage.
King's a promising player but he's returning from a fairly significant injury and will probably need a full preseason to recapture his 2022 form.
Maybe that's what he is doing now?

Carlton have some very average players getting regular games
Silvagni staggers me
pittonet is a second string ruck
they rely on Doc,Weitering to much in defense
Sadd was a good pick up and they don't have Williams eithier this year.

they don't have an "X" factor small forward Martin hasn't lived up to the hype and motlop doesn't seem to get to the right spots. Midfield looks okay but Kennedy is hit and miss

Carltons best 22 on paper is as good as any in the league. Look at freo, they're struggling for one key forward, Carlton have two and are travelling slightly better than them.

Their spine is fantastic, they've got an incredibly good midfield including the reigning brownlow medallist.

Carlton's midfield is as slow as a wet week.

A massively overrated list.

Yes, they have no speed, Saad would win their 100 meter dash running backwards
Yes no speed, but the thing that gets me is the contested power in there should be doing a whole lot more. Cripps looks like he could rip some opposition mids in half.

I think there's a whole lot of mongrel and grit lacking. Not so much Crippa, but he's so tall he often ends up giving away head high frees.

You've got George Hewett who was recruited for that role, he's either injured or playing on a back flank. He'd be full time mid in most sides in the competition when he's fit, contested ball winner, tough, not good skills but you can hide that

Broken hand in round 1, hasn't looked too good since. Suspect its still effecting his ability to tackle etc

How well did that guy fall on his feet?!? 50 years from now, Jack Martin will still be telling the story about how Carlton paid him $1m for 15 games of footy.

The coaches can only use the players that the club provide to them. Those player recruitments can be for upwards of a decade and more before the coach ever set foot in the club. They are at the mercy of the list provided.

When he was at Freo. In our contending years, I personally think we were borderline 8 with anyone except for a few exceptional coaches, we had some exceptional talents (Pav, Fyfe, Mundy etc), but we didn't have a full 22, we were fielding a few players that would have been depth in any other team - no disrespect meant to them, they gave their hearts and full effort on the field. Plus, Pav at 192cm, we didn't have functioning KPFs for a spine, Pav could dive and take marks that the opponent couldn't do anything about - but he couldn't bring the aerial ball to ground for the smalls to crum, plus no effective 2nd tall. So, using the tools at hand, our team was the "great effort" team - in absence of enough talent put pressure on them instead, when you have lemons make lemonade kinda thing.

We all see the stars and go Ooh and Aah, but it's a team game, Ross will get more out of the team he's given - not just the magical 2 or 3 stars. Oh for some differences of umpiring and/or player decisions, he'd be revered as multiple GF winner at Several clubs.

Your mob is not as good as you think is all.
Again, last year, same scenario and look how it panned out.
Not to mention, Ross' game plan is very taxing. You should really know all this already (Saints 08-11).
If you can’t tell the difference between how we played and won our games in the first part of last season, to how we have won them this season, they you’re obviously not watching our games now.
