Do you think Ken did a good job with an average list, or did he underperform with the list he had?
I think that he dis the best he could with the players he had available, and when he goes it might become clear that you need to be careful what you wish for with Power supporters.

It’s not over yet. He’s still head coach and may yet win the flag and/or be extended by Port.

What people forget is that Port was on its knees and a laughing stock of the comp when Kenny took over. He built them back up to become a respectable side who have played many finals under his watchful eye.

He’s done the best with what he’s had to work with.

He also gets massive props from me for bringing the fans, senior coach, players and past player media personalities to their knees by mimicking a plane.

I think it’ll be a case of we won’t know what we had with Kenny until he is gone. Which is sad to say.

I just wonder how different we would all be viewing Ken would be if Moore kicked that goal in the 2014 prelim. Or if Hodge doesn't make that smother.

Or Duersma doesn´t drop that chest mark in the prelim against Richmond.

History is littered with guys who almost made a Grand Final and Ken has literally been given more chances than any of them. As in, ever.

hard to say he was 'given' more chances when all coaches are given chances but he took them more than most in his tenure maybe not to ultimate success but more success than many other coaches

Ken has only had two realistic chances of just making the Grand Final in 13 years. Meanwhile, we’ve seen multiple other coaches actually make the GF and get sacked shortly afterwards. Hell we’ve even had a guy win the flag and still get sacked and could possibly see another by year’s end.

In the 11 other seasons we either didn’t make the finals or were absolutely bashed when we got there. Notions that he’s been a success are delusional.

i disagree, 60% win rate in over 280 games puts him at master tier imo

The list has almost always had holes all over it.

Built a strong culture, motivational coach.
I liked him being there, because he always had them overperforming. Never a risk of a flag because they were too good to build a list that could actually win.
Actually, never isn't factual. They nearly struck gold in 2020 when they still had Gray/Boak etc. in their twilight and the youthful exuberance of Butters/Rozzee/Duursma

When Ken leaves, I know there will be short term regression. But it might allow them to find elite talent and they might strike gold with a master tactician.

Imagine if Ken, (or Voss at Carlton or Scott at Essendon for that matter) had a competent recruiting department. Could be dangerous. But all 3 are polishing a turd at the moment. Good coaches, but being set up to fail by the club and board.

What do you mean? It’s definitely over . No way in hell they win a flag this year (finals are unlikely) and Carr is already named as coach next year.

No need to be pessimistic

He did well, would compare him to a Neale Daniher type that had a good 10+ year coaching record without winning a premiership (which are hard to win)

He turned around a putrid team and had them contending for a good period of time.

So even South Australian based AFL supporters should post about Victorian sides?
Crazy to think someone in SA would have more investment in the SA sides.
Why are you taking it personally? I simply asked a genuine question: are you being paid per thread? If you signed an NDA, don't respond to this post and I will accept that you are not allowed to talk about it.

I actually love your work. You are getting 2 or 3 threads out each week. And we almost never get threads about Hinkley.

First half of his career, he overachieved considering where Port were at before he took over. Latter half, he underachieved, especially losing those home prelims in 2020/21.

Rough to say he isn't a good coach cause he didn't get to the ultimate. But we're harsh critics. Would Port have been better without him? I'd say no.

Yup, but to win a premiership takes luck as well as everything else. If he's coached a team to within one mistake of a GF, then he's done a decent job. The rest is up to the players.

Yup - Whilst clearly it's time for him to move on, I've always said the fan base are incorrectly blaming him for the deficiency's of others in the footy department.

The list has never been good enough, and yet we've managed to go close on a few occasions, and often been there or there abouts. It's always been a "nearly there" list, but the over-reliance on Charlie Dixon as the key forward for the best part of a decade shows it all. In 9 years at Port, he never got to 50 goals. He got to 49 in 2017, 48 in 2021 but beyond that it's pretty bleak. In fact, in 5 seasons, he didn't even get to 30 goals. Injuries and all that yes, but who else was the key forward during those times?

In defence, for the longest time he had to make do with undersized Trent McKenzie, Tom Jonas and Tom Clurey as his key defenders (with Aliir as well).

I've been pretty vocal around our list management/selections and how poor they've been for acquiring Key position/ruck talent - but I keep getting told that it's Hinkley that can't develop the talls.. Despite none of the talls that we drafted going on to another club and becoming anything useful.

Infact, I can't think of a single player that has left Port and gone on to become a better player than he was at Port (Billy Frampton the one and only exception). This tells me that Ken has got the best out of his list.

280 odd games without a grand final appearance. Clearly in the eyes of the Port board he hasn't underperformed

Bottom 4 side now and still won't get the sack is mind blowing.

Or Hartlett doesn't get pinged for that deliberate with Rockliff right there. (I actually blame Rockliff for that - had he pretended to go for the ball instead of leaving it, he may have convinced the ump)

yeah true. It was there though. As you said they muffed it.
