Hinkley has had a great success in his first year... so did Scott.

Sanderson had a great success in his first year... so did Scott, and now Sanderson is struggling.

Can't see how Hinkley or Sanderson are potentially better because of their short successes, for which Scott did better.

I am critical of Scott at times, he has gotten it wrong numerous times... but I don't understand how others are better at this point, when Scott is a proven successful coach.

I think it is fair to ask the question, but the answer for me is yes - at least for the next 12 months, probably 24.

Strengths
- very good list management/transition
- very good in the media
- very good managing the personnel, especially in terms of giving players responsibility and some autonomy
- very open and straight-forward. Good custodian of the culture

Weaknesses
- (as part of the match committee) not able, so far, to unpick Ross Lyon's game plan.

While he definitely deserves more time, everyone's performance needs to be monitored if we are to remain a top club.

Flag, 7th, 3rd.

Im all for looking up but you are kidding right?

We as Geelong supporters had better start understanding how blessed we have been or its gonna get ugly here on a biblical scale when the miraculous wins start to dry up - and they will with the youth policy coming though. Not a criticism but its just the nature of the beast..

It remains to be seen.

As others have said, he's earned himself a little leeway after winning a premiership in his first year, but let's be honest here, he inherited a pretty damn good list in '11. Most of the work had already been done for him in terms of development and culture.

As we move further away from the Bomber Thompson era and into the Chris Scott era, we will really see what kind of coach and how good Chris really is. He will be truly judged on how well he can transition the list over, the list management calls he makes pertaining to that, the way he's able to develop and keep the group competitive, and what kind of tactical stamp he will leave on the group.

I thought he was a sublime selection after we won the 2011 premiership, but I guess the question has to be raised - with the group we had, could just about any other decent coach have steered us to to that same result? Since then, Scott has made some decisions regarding team selection, recruitment, and player management that I would consider strange.

We've won a flag under him, made a prelim, and made three consecutive finals series, so it's not panic stations yet, by any means. His real test as a coach will come when the majority of our senior players have left, however.

Also, Scott needs to understand that he coaches Geelong and that's where his loyalties lie. He does not need to let North Melbourne train with the Geelong football club during the off-season to appease his brother, or accept any players that his brother throws at him for a trade. He needs to be wary of the fact that Brad is looking out for his club's best interests, and he needs to do the same.

Biggy, you make it sound so easy to win premierships. Yeah 2011 was personnel wise largely a remnant of the Bomber era but the significant game plan tweak was Scott's as was the fantastic way he carried himself throughout that year (selection, youth, media policy).

The delicate line Scott and co are walking will only become more and more apparent in the years to come. Respecting the older champs, while at the same time getting enough games into the kids to still contend in two to three years will be a tough challenge.

Premierships are bloody hard to win. GFC since 2007 might make it look easy but ask eg Hawthorn supporters before yesterday what it's like. That's why I feel there is more respect between the two clubs and supporters now.

As I've said elsewhere, he will ultimately be judged on his ability to prevent us from completely bottoming out (Footscray, St Kilda) yet at the same time fashioning a squad of about 30-35 that will be able to seriously challenge for a flag before the end of Selwood, Hawkins and Taylor.

We were supposedly going to fall in a heap when Moneybags did a runner to the Cold Toast and Thompson pissed off to Essendumb. We didn't.
We were supposedly going to struggle when Mooney,Milburn,Ling,Ottens & Scarlett retired. We didn't.

Scott has got a heap of young guys into the team as replacements - Duncan,Motlop,Bundy,Blicavs,Vardy,Guthrie,Caddy,Murdoch,Smedts

This and the post you quoted is why I laugh and cry when people call Scotty a crap coach.

I honestly cannot believe this bullshit. He won us a flag in his first year - 6th and then 3rd all with a list in tradition. This thread is a ******* disgrace and disrespectful - honestly it just reeks of ******* petulance, hubris and a sense of entitlement. We as a supporter base and club are better than that.

He has not missed a finals series. Has won a premiership. Blooded about a dozen kids. Got finals experience into kids.
Yep, he's a crap coach.

Nothing wrong with Chris Scott. Sure he may have made some interesting decisions but in the end we were within a kick of a grand final so he must be doing ok.

I think maybe our assistants need a new injection of life of more recently retired players. We have Rahilly, Amos who never really played at the elite level. O'Bree has yet to prove his worth. Caracella has been there for a while. I think maybe we just need some new voices and ideas from recent successful programs. Look at guys like Jude Bolton who recently retired. Even poach someone from Hawthorn or Sydney or even Freo. Lets do some of that ourselves rather than having it done to us.

That is purely dependent on personnel. If 211 is dominant in the ruck, and is able to gift goals the way he did down at Geelong, then we are in trouble
We beat them easily in Geelong early this year when they were missing stars, and we had DS dominating.

I am a big Scottie fan - I think we are in good hands with him at the helm.

On a related note, I wonder what changes there will be, if any, to the coaching panel next year?. With Shane o'Bree joining at the start of the year and Lappin moving into a development role, the coaching panel may stay the same. I do wonder sometimes if Mathew Knights would like to be Line Coach but I suspect he is comfortable in his current VFL coaching role, developing the younger players and enjoying the autonomy as a match day coach.

We played 8 players in a Preliminary Final who will be 22 or under this year.
Go and and look at Hawthorn , Freo and the Swans teams in the GF and Prelims in terms of age - we are doing very nicely for a team who has won 3 flags since 07
Scott is driving that and he has the courage to see it through. We will be battling it out with Gold Coast and GWS in a few years , don't know about our contempories.

This guy has done jack all. Would seriously love to see Ling come in as midfield coach, Dasher and Scarlo back as defensive coaches and Mooney back as a forward coach. Would be nice having our old players (those who look likely as coaches) back around the clubs inspiring the kids.
