Opinion Do We Need A Strong Reserves Side, Or Is It Just A Feeder/Development Concept?

I've never drawn parallels between the senior and reserve side.

For me it has always been a feeder/developmental. Somewhere you play to gain some form and momentum. You play with players who aren't even listed with the AFL side.

Depends on your list profile. We have more highly paid “stars” than many or most clubs, and will do for at least five years. We are middling at VFL level, and that is perhaps mostly due to the VFL listed players.

With the salary cap “biting” we are less likely to keep as many mature depth types as earlier. We are adding the Irish boys and probably two or three youngsters at the end of the season. This is highly likely to weaken our reserves further, but should provide a great avenue for development.

Don’t expect our ressies to be dominant any time soon. As long as we are developing the likes of Cowan, Binns, Lemmey,O’Keeffe effectively we are doing OK. Thinking we have had a bit of a fail with some on the list, which will be hard to turn around.

We carry a few players who will take years to come on, if at all. We are definitely using it for development.

You also only need to lose a handful of first team players, who are replaced by the best handful of second team players and it falls apart from there.

Throw Dow, Marchbank, Fisher and Ed back into the twos and they do a whole lot better than they did today.

Reserves any day of the week.
Not only does it serve to build form and depth, but it helps the players build tighter relationships and knowledge of how one another plays.

A team that plays together stays together.

...And goes to War in finals together 😉

does a strong reserves side not happen when the senior side is going well?

If your seniors are aiming for deep in finals and the reserves are poor, is that not an indication of poor depth?

I’d say a strong reserves side is needed to push the senior side, to provide adequate depth and cover for injuries.

We have had quite a few injuries, so perhaps our reserves are struggling with this.

You need strong reserves, if reserves don’t make finals u have no ability to get a run for a returning best 22 player.
Also need a side strong enough to run the same system as the 1s & develop players without them copping a hiding week in week out

It’s not like we are a bad vfl team, we are touch and go for finals and had a lot of personnel change across the season (both with form and injury).

Gold Coast also have currently a larger list than every other club, which would help their VFL team a lot.

Without knowing who finished top 4 in each season, a quick look at the VFL premiers and runners up the last 20 or so years, gives some reference.

2002 to 2013 Geelongs reserves played in 5 grand finals, winning three times.

Hawthorn reserves 2013-2015 played 3 grand finals in a row, winning once.

Footscray 2015-2016 played in 3 grand finals winning twice.

Richmond 2017-2019 played in two grand finals winning one.

Melbourne 2018-2022 have played in two grand finals winning once (two of these season had no finals series)

There is enough there for me to show to be successful in the AFL you need to have a strong reserves side to match

They may have got smashed but the progress of our development department since the reveiw circa teague has meant that some of the c grade types are now playing great roles in our firsts

Cottrell
Dow
Boyd (when he was playing)
Cincotta
Kemp
Owies
Fogarty

Has made a massive difference to our squad to have our bottom 6 lifted in quality.

Players also seem to have a quicker turn around in form when they go back too.

Having a competitive reserves side is paramount for success, it doesn't have to be super strong but can't be poor to the point of being thrashed every week.

We have been competitive this year and would be playing finals if not for the shellacking on the weekend. We have lost 3 games by narrow margins and unfortunately injuries at the back end of the season have robbed us of experience in our 2's. Six senior players out, 6 players out of the 2's. The transition of players from the reserves into the seniors has been faultless this year during our winning streak, our depth and development is looking better than previous years.

Unfortunately, with our reserves out we can bring injured players back through their ranks now that their season is done.
