If they feel he needs a babysitter, why re-appoint him. I don't see the need to overcomplicate things. Either he can do it or he can't imo.

If Bucks gets an extension does the club reinstate the role MM & Balmey knocked back and appoint a ' Director of Coaching?
That's up to Geoff Walsh.

Buck probably needed a DoC the first 2-3 years but Malthouse deserted the club despite a very lucrative contract.
No point now, Bucks is just starting to come into his own.
LOL's at idiots still suggesting cast offs like Lyon and Scott et al.

Who is suggesting Lyon and Scott pmsl

I wouldn't be surprised if Rodney Eade returned in a similar role...or as a senior assistant?

No Thanks. Did a Terrible Job at Suns and is Past It.

Better off doing something with the AFL

The win, loses column was not great but the off stuff he had to deal with was more than the coach should have to deal with. With those off field problems to consider, then he has done a very good job for the next coach

I assume you don't read the football media....
Brad Hardy claimed Ross Lyon had approached Collingwood for the job and numerous outlets are touting Brad Scott, even after we beat North and even though Buckley has a better coaching record in a shorter period of time.

Lyon and Scott are 2 very different prospects.

Scott - No. There has been nothing in his time at North to suggest he is particularly better than Bucks.

Lyon on the other hand took two seperate teams to 3 Grand Finals, was very close to winning 2 of those games (with poor kicking the problem in the 3rd), and had a lot of those players punching far above their weights.
I would absolutely take Ross if he wanted the job here.

I do read it but no supporter has suggested them

I rkn he might be past it

What would a director of coaching do?

A few ideas about what would be in the Job Description:

(1) Develop the coaching structure. We take for granted that there is a person called a "Senior Coach" and that they are supported by three line coaches, nominally Defense, Midfield and forwards, also various development coaches, fitness staff, etc, etc. Is all that optimal? For example, does it make sense that the same person who runs training is the same person who moves the chess pieces around on gameday?

(2) Develop systems of measuring coaching performance beyond W-D-L. For example, how to measure a coach's ability to effectively and efficiently impart knowledge? To inspire? How do they measure that in the teaching profession?

(3) Develop systems of assessing coaching candidates. How to effectively assess if the person sitting on the other side of the table at a job interview is suited to the particular needs of the coaching role? Writing and fine tuning job descriptions.

(4) Identifying coaches' training needs and how to fill in skills gaps.

(5) Introduce feedback loops to contually improve the process around (1), (2), (3) and (4). Hine and Co do it for players. Why not do it for coaches? Also monitor what other clubs and other codes and other industries are doing around (1), (2), (3) and (4) and feed that in as well.

-----

Given the number of coaches we have across all our teams, and the number of different types of coaches ranging from the dietitian to a netball assistant coach, to the AFL senior coach, to the biomechanics coach ...

... IMHO there is plenty of scope there to keep a person very busy and to add real value. We've long had Moneyball methods for players, why not for coaches? It could be the next frontier of improvement? (Although Hawthorn have started it to some extent with their practice of recruiting assistant coaches from the teaching fraternity)

As for who would make a great DoC? It's probably best that they aren't from an AFL background so they don't come with prejudices and preconceived ideas of how things should be done. Their key competency would be somebody who is a good analyst, a good strategist, and be able to relate well to people.

I don't think so, I think he's probably learnt a lot the last few years....it couldn't hurt but I feel our footy department spending could be better used elsewhere. Like a skills and kicking coach!

I think our number 1 priority should be get the best possible footy department boss and to retain him!

Haven't we just had around four in the last four years? We surely wouldn't want to change it yet again?

Yeah it's screwed...5 in 5 years. If he's the best option stick with him, we need to make a long term decision!!

Strategies only work if you stick to them. You keep changing bosses they all want their own strategy

Geoff Walsh stays, tick.

Sanderson stays, tick.

Keep improving the list, priority!

Kicking for goal training, priority!

Director of Coaching? See Geoff Walsh.

Leave the place alone.

I'm not a Lyon fan. Has lucked out getting to a couple of clubs with a few absolute guns but can't get them over that final hurdle and ultimately leaves the team in a pretty poor way. I'll watch with interest to see if he can rebuild Freo. I doubt it, he's already taking shortcuts. Doubt he'll be at the helm when they next are ready to challenge.

Love Walshy to commit to the role for the next 4-5 years, set the club on a clear direction so we get some consistent direction, particularly on the recruiting front.

We got very lucky there Pie Eyed.
The Mick and Bucks partnership was doomed.
They were paired up. It wasn't like Mick had any say in his successor.

I'm glad that they parted company.
It would have been a media soap box!
Nathan and Mick reportably didn't have a great friendship.
Having Mick To steer Nathan.?
Nathan was always going to choose his own path.
