My interest has waned with how unwatchable most games are.

Unskilled, turnover laden defensively dour football where the best players are often loose defenders not on a man.
WTF has happened to footy.

Quality post.

Perfectly sumed up in this article.

"Geelong deserve credit for being the best defensive team in the league but the spectacle they provide with their stoppage-based, kick-down-the-line footy and unwillingness to take the game on lest they should expose their defence is painful to watch.

The Tigers showed why Geelong have only won three finals from 11 in the last six years – because in high-intensity games, you simply don’t have the luxury of slow ball-movement. The pace of the game is forced upon you and if you’re not used to high-intensity footy, you can’t be expected to really compete when the whips are cracking.

Richmond should be commended for saving the state of the game on the weekend, shining briliantly with their attacking footy on a sodden, dreary day."

I don't think Geelong are playing beautiful football at the moment but I don't think the Tigers are either. Don't get me wrong, the Tigers are very, very good at what they do, but their intense pressure style is not good for the spectacle of the game. This affects both teams - the Tigers and their opponent. The 2017 QF was one of the worst games I have ever seen (and not because we lost - we were clearly second best). Yes, the Tigers pressure was impressive, and unlike anything we've ever seen (including Freo 2013 etc.) but these super high-pressure teams generally lead to poor quality football with teams hacking the ball forward and making rushed handballs and kicks just to avoid getting caught with the ball. Pressure will always be a part of the game but when it is this central to a team's game-plan, it leads to some horrible footy.

I, and I assume most fans, would rather watch a game where the best natural footballers can showcase their marking, kicking and hand-balling under pressure, but not this level of pressure. This level of pressure suits unskilled, "role-players" over natural footballers. It prioritises athletes, who can run 15-20km and repeat efforts, over natural footballers. The one Tiger player I love watching is Dustin Martin because of his exquisite field kicking, vision and nous around goals. I want to see more players like Martin, and less guys who are there just to bust a gut.

Which highlights my point perfectly. The fact that merely being physical and close makes it one of the games of the year is an indictment on how far this sport has fallen.

It was still a low skilled affair on both sides with few redeeming moments.
It’s actually sad that this was a contest between two top 4 aspirants and is regarded as one of the games of the year. It was crap footy, no flow, low skills and a dour affair.

Yeah fair enough, it might not have been your cup of tea. I can get enjoyment out of games like that

Hmm, only marginally even though I like soccer.

1. The World Cup this year does not clash much with the AFL in terms of timeslot, so I don't find myself caught up in one league over the other.
2. My interest in prime time games have diminished much earlier in the year given that there were not many big clashes on Friday/Saturday night for much of the first part of the year.

I did watch France vs Australia over Hawthorn vs Adelaide though, a game that I normally would be interested in if the WC wasn't on.

I have been a little surprised at how sour Richmond fans are about Geelong in the past two years. Is this because the Cats have beaten up on the Tigers for the past 35 years? 42 - 10 since 1983. Interesting. I actually don't mind the Tigers, but their fans are fast becoming more ignorant and repulsive than Hawthorn supporters...and that's saying something. I wonder if it's an abandonment issue?

Yeah Geelong's style of play this year has been horrid.

The way australia played against France makes the sydney flood look like a puddle. Soccer is an inferior sport designed for the incredibly simple minded.
so how come most of the aussie rules players are thick as bricks in comparison?
i've played those two footy codes as well as hockey, and in the mensa stakes i'd have the hockey players top, soccer second, and aussie rules a distant last.

How did Eagles go last week

I’m not sure they’re the definite article

Get it? Grammar joke ay? Funny
Great work O'Rourke

Ive always like the definite article seen with The West Coast Eagles. Controversial and deeply unpopular I admit but proper use should always see for example Batman referred as The Batman
