Does your interest in the AFL wane when the WC is on?

My interest doesn't wane. I enjoy the WC but I love footy. I'd only change the channel to watch the WC if it was a poor or uninteresting game of footy on.

I don't watch soccer much but watching the World Cup made me realise that I understand soccers rules/officiating more than AFL currently.
I'm not sure on exact details but I'm fairly sure that soccer has seldom changed rules over the history of the game. It makes it very consistent.

The AFL seems to be very much about interpretation.

I've watched about 15-20 minutes of it. First thing I saw was a bloke throwing himself on the ground after being brushed. Then about 10 minutes later I saw 2 blokes rolling around on the ground as if Plugger had run over them. Still not sure what happened to them. I almost thought I was watching Rance.

Some would say it’s crying out for a bit of a refresher.
There is definetly a few things that I personally believe need to be looked at, especially more gradients on the (especially penalty) fouls and maybe another two offside referees.

WC? I haven't watched a 2nd of it. I only follow soccer when Holland are playing.

And I rarely watch AFL anymore either.

So Geelong have now lost their last 2 against their once bunnies, and now it's "I rarely watch AFL anymore." The way you've talked shit around here for so long, I would have sworn you'd watched every game. A fair-weather supporter maybe? Surely not.

But let me guess? "The games played shit now, and there's been no good teams for the last 6-7 years." Ok knackers. :$

I tried getting into Soccer a few times, if it's not interesting it's just not interesting. I used to at least watch a few WC games but the corruption is a joke so that's a bit of a turn off, if they're willing to be bought and paid to put it in Russia and Qatar so Qatar can use slaves to build stadiums and Russia can gloss over their human rights issues, where do they draw the line? A bit hard to doubt they'd rig a game or two, that's for damn sure.

Does anyone know the average km's these soccer players run per game? Watching big boner brown top the charts with almost 13 km
(as full forward ) in the North v Dogs match got me thinking. Thats not even taking into account the other factors that take it out of the AFL men, like tackling, bumping and rucking just for starters. Our game must be close to being the most physical TEAM sport in the world.

Seriously!

WC lose 2 games & everyone comes out of the toilet & threads like this are started?

Try playing entertaining footy whilst missing exciting key forwards, but even so I reckon you would need to run a Mile to see a more Krusey side.

Not uncommon for strikers in soccer to run 15km+ from memory.

There's some pretty impressive beep test results floating around from soccer players too because they don't carry the same upper body bulk AFL players do.

I can understand why casual sports fans struggle to get into soccer sometimes. It's a much, much better sport to watch when you're emotionally invested in one of the teams than it is when you're watching as a neutral. That's when you start riding every pass and really get drawn into the tension of the build up play and the defensive aspect.

I watch every game I can of the WC because I love international sport, but I don't often bother watching neutral club games.

This is very true. Its incredibly tense when you are willing your country to win.

Its same reason i find those exhibition games played here during winter when big name teams like Liverpool or AC Milan visit. There's nothing riding on it therefore hard to get enthused

I've been to 5 VFL/AFL Grand Finals and 1 World Cup Final.

For sheer tension and excitement the 5 Grand Finals cannot touch the 1 World Cup.

So, yes, my interest in footy has been largely put in the bottom draw while the biggest sporting event on the planet is being played.

What WC final did you go to

The Dees being a bunch of flat-trackers has sapped enough of my interest this season already, but the World Cup has done the rest. Its a far better sporting event than anything the AFL will ever do. Was looking forward to flipping on the tele for a bit of footy today, and saw the only game on is going to be Collingwood ritualistically belting Carlton, ft. an AFL.com.au Blues Brothers overture to try generate some interest in a whitewash. Pass. Can't wait for 10pm.
