The clear evidence is that the board felt there were issues with Harvey as coach. Whether that has come from their own observations or from the end of season reviews, or a combination of other factors also, clearly there were doubts as to his suitability. Whatever the factors that affected our season, the board felt his position was very much in doubt at the end of his contract.

The fact that a suitable candidate became available 12 months earlier than expected basically forced their hand. It would have been mismanagement of the highest order to pass up on the opportunity to get Lyon this year and hope he was still available next year. Remember, he had a 4 year deal on the table from St Kilda also.

And if the media had of discovered this at some point next year, then Harvey would have been dead man walking and the board would have looked much worse. Not to mention the backlash from supporters if we were in the bottom 10 at the time.

No they weren't Shibz, they sacked him when a better coach became available.

Lets say you like your job and you're happy there. Then a rival company offers you twice the money but you need to start immediately....that's what happened to the Fremantle Football Club, they were presented with an opportunity too good to refuse.

The only other way it could have been managed would have been to have a signed MoU from Lyon, then tell Harves his time was up, and after a few weeks or so, have Ross officially give notice at the Saints, sign a contract and be announced as the new coach.

And hopefully all would be well until someone lines up the dates.

Bit like how GC/GWS do it. But that method ends up causing prolonged media speculation and in reality is more disruptive to the club than a sudden single change since you have a dead-man walking scenario and a wasted few weeks.

Trade week is three weeks away and the 2nd year players will start pre-season around the same time so pulling the handbrake wasn't really an option.
