who do you think essendon's most important player is at the moment?
with hird gone its fair hard to decide out of lloyd, lucas, fletcher or mcveigh you'd reckon.

i'd have to say mcveigh.
without his efforts in the midfield we got dominated by st.kilda all night.
the end result doesnt show a domination but if you check the scoring shots we could have easily lost by 12+ goals.

Its a tough one between Fletcher, McVeigh & Lucas
Fletcher holds our backline together
McVeigh is our best and most experienced midfielder
Lucas goal kicking from outside 50 metres. We don't even need to be able to get it inside 50 metres if we can give it to him just outside of it.

All of the above. Fletcher showed his importance a few week s back. McVeigh has done all year. Hille also.

Davey and Lovett are becoming very important also. Davey shows the way when it comes to tackilin, pressure and second/third efforts.

If Hille plays well we win.
If Hille doesn't play at all we really would struggle. Laycock would be forced into the number one ruck posistion with Paddy having to leave centre half back to provide backup. Bellchambers could be thrown in but isn't ready. Hille is most important not just because he is playing great footballl but because we wouldn't have the options to cover his lose.

At the moment Hille and Fletcher would be the most important players in the side, both of them would be very hard too replace.

when you consider our current game plan of "let them kick as many goals as they want as long as we kick more" i think lucas is our most important. i believe saints would have smashed our midfield with or without mcveigh, and fletcher isn't as important as he used to be with michael and patrick down there (i like saying patrick). lucas could have been the difference against the dogs. we probably would have lost to cats and saints even with our best 22.

I'd say McVeigh, he holds the midfield together. Some might say that Lloyd is our most important player, but the team has proved that they can kick goals without him.

Hille and Fletch are the equal 2nd most important players. Hille does a fantastic job in the ruck and also kicks goals and Fletch plays a very important role in the backline.

But if our midfield was better Fletchs job wouldn't be so hard. Our shit midfield means the defensive 50 gets bombarded a lot, which means Fletch has to work extra hard. If our midfield was better the defensive 50 wouldn't get bombarded as much.

How would the midfield fair without our number one ruckman?

1. Alwyn - we completly disentegrated last year as soon as he got injured. Gives us forward pressure, spark and genuine class. Only small player we have that can hurt a side.

2. Lucas - gives opposition coaches nightmares as far as matchups are concerned. Not many backmen have got his tank and the ability to provide a genuine marking option. Not to mention his devastating left foot.

3. Fletcher - backline general who sets up much of our rebounding forward play.

4. Hille - provides a classy ruyck option who can hurt opposing teams the other way. Matches it with almost evry ruck in the league one on one.

5. McVeigh - tough, hard and experienced who can play any position. You want him in the trenches with you.

We are now missing three of these players. To put it frankly - we are f**ked for the moment. :(

either laycock or dyson. big call both extremely talented............NOT!

But in a strange way he is right. These types of players are the most important, if they don't lift, we don't improve. While most of the above are reliable week in week out, it is when these "second stringers" take the step up that we can be brilliant.
