Why does everybody get sucked in by certain posters and keep responding to their crap?
We all know, (well it appears to be the case) that these same posters are clearly out to get a rise from firing people up.
I must admit there are many times I've read certain posts and nearly been sucked in by typing a response only to think better of it and delete it.
Let's just ignore them and and don't give them the attention they are seeking.

I use to but as of today I ignored those flogs

The only thing that annoys me are the ones who derail every single ****ing thread with the same mindless rhetoric and hyperbole and aren't there to have constructive discussions. They are the digital equivalent to those campaigners you see at the football who are going to tell everyone within ear shot their worthless ****ing opinion of everything and who won't respond to you with any valid arguments if you challenge them.

These particular parasites should be IP banned.

Just put them on your ignore list Wooljay......

I've just returned from a big, big hiatus and one thing I noticed straight away is the hostility on this board.

I think a lot of people need to take a deep breath and relax. It's just a message board after all. Digital words on a screen from someone you don't know and will probably never meet. Not worth the energy of getting upset about if you ask me.

I have only been on big footy posting as of this year, and I already can tell through some of my posts who they are. Lots of negativity for sure.

Not sure I agree with you there Good_Old. This is a forum in which people use language and images to interact with each other. It is far more than a message board. The OP makes a good point and I am as guilty as anymore for responding to certain posters who in my opinion have an agenda. The Marsh Injury thread is a good example of how some people use a topic that we should all be in agreement on to try and annoy the rest of the board.

I never understand anyone getting annoyed or even angry with posters they don't like or disagree with. I have enough going on in my life, good things and bad, to be wasting emotional energy arguing and getting frustrated at other posters on this board.

Life is way too short, most of us don't even know each other personally and they are just opinions after all. If you read something you strongly disagree with, put your point of view across if you must, but certainly don't waste your energy getting all worked up and annoyed over it.

I find that this works quite well;

I enjoy a good troll, sadly good ones are hard to find. I prefer to have a laugh than to get upset over someone's comments. If they are funny to me (a BBB move X player to full back thread) i can just laugh and be amused at how many people bite. If they are just childish crap trolls i prefer it if no one responds at all.

I've wondered about this issue for a long time - long before I ever knew about BigFooty.

Anybody who has ever been to a Colligwood footy game will have seen that there are Collingwood fans in the crowd who yell and curse and hurl abuse at their own players - certainly far more abuse than they'll ever toss at an opposition player. Hell, you'll even get those (wearing Collingwood colours) who graciously clap a opposition act one moment, and and spew forth green bile at our own team the next.

If you were to be asked after a game "what were the fans around you like?" - maybe, just maybe you might mention the family with the cute well-behaved kids. But without fail you'll mention the bloke (sorry ladies, but I've only ever seen blokes like this) who will have mercilessly hurled abuse at Maxwell "for being a hack" or Toovs "for his crap kicking" or some other player for his brain fades. Do you just wish that a security would just drop in and hurl them out? Maybe sometimes yes. Sometimes you might think they're funny (as long as your kids aren't with you). Other times you might reflect on what their life must be like outside of footy - what makes them like this?

Some suggest folks here on Bigfooty are doing it for the attention ... attention that they might not get if they were more mainstream. Yeah, maybe in some cases that might be true. But those blokes at the footy certainly aren't like that - they're on their own planet. They likely don't even realise that they're venting out all their frustration with the world on a bunch of footy players who are supposed to be performing for their entertainment.

And so it is on BigFooty. And on the other Collingwood fan forums too. We have many posters on here, every one of them different, but it's those who are contentious who'll often get noticed. You'll see it when people start a phrase with "People on BigFooty are ..." or "Why are people so ...", etc, etc. When you dissect it, the "people" that they're referring to are probably less than 2% of the population on here.

Are other clubs like this? I haven't observed it. Admittedly most of my experience at the footy with other teams these days are with the Swans. The worst that I've ever seen there is some sweet little old lady knitting a red and white scarf for her grandkid, and offering to share her thermos flask of hot tea with me. In a moment of frustration she might degenerate to "Ooo, Adam Goodes, isn't he a handsome lad, I have a single daughter who I'd love to introduce him to!"

Swans fans are a bit unique. Victorian clubs do have their colourful supporters just as Collingwood has - but I've never seen opposition fans turn on their own players in the way some of our supporters seem to.

I've often wondered how our club deals with this? Yeah, things do sometimes get a bit wild here on BigFooty, especially after a bad loss, but I couldn't begin to imagine the stuff our club have to deal with sometimes. All the more so because the club is effectively accountable to their members, their fan base, which includes those very people. I do wonder how they do deal with it? When they're inducting new players, what do they teach them about dealing with supporters?

The good thing about this place is that you can ignore the morons. (so I do not expect a reply to this ;))
The only supporters that have made me change places at a game (I was young) were collingwood supporters.

I also do not mind a bit of negativity - balance is good in all forms of life, nothing is all pro and nothing is all con. It is the constant negativity with no solution offered expect "sack everyone and hire the bestest". Also blaming Buckley for our poor kicking seems silly - as if ANY coach in the AFL level would not address kicking standards seems unthinkable.

I think Tiges fans, amongst others, can turn on their own pretty nastily as well. From dipping into other clubs boards on BF, I don't think we're unique in having some posters with an axe they insist on constantly grinding.

You just need to cultivate a little more blasé attitude - take just a small step back from it all. If you see a deliberately inciteful post, recognise it for what it is and move on to read and respond to someone who is offering intelligent or constructive discussion and will make your time here enjoyable. Unless the forum has become completely infested with trolls, whether you have a good or bad experience here is entirely up to you and your approach to other posters, not the other way around.

This thread needs to be bumped. I've put a few of these posters on ignore and my bigfooty experience has gone up by 100 per cent. At the start you can't help yourself but to have a look at the ignored content but once you get over that it's such a great feeling, it's like all the annoying posters have dropped off the earth or something.

Everyone should make use of the ignore button trust me it's great. :thumbsu:

I have contemplated putting some people on ignore, but then I think that it would make all the forums disjointed and unreadable

and nothing more than group think. Couldn't think of anything worse than everyone agreeing with each other

It works well 95% of the time. Sometimes a bit confusing (posts not making sense). However I strongly recommend to weed out the annoying posters. It does make BF more enjoyable.
There is still plenty of lively debate & an abundance of varying opinions & ideas.
The ground remains fertile......without the serial annoying posters.
At least give it a try. :)

I have recently gone on a Stalinist purge in my use ignore button but a lot of those were opposition trolls who just wanted to waste energy. I've only put two Collingwood supporters on ignore because their opinions were useless and they just wanted attention and to pump up their post counts.

There are still plenty of poster with a wide range of views who I'm happy to debate Collingwood with.

It's really about the annoying poster rather then a difference of opinion as to what makes ignore useful.

As the last poster said it works a treat. :thumbsu:

Golly....how did you choose which ones to keep?

It's pretty easy to work out who's who and what's what around here. The usual suspects never disappoint ... not much sign of them when the team is winning though, funny that.

How nice it was before the mid point of the season not to have the board choked up with the endless Bucks is shit bring back MM, player x shouldn't have been traded or delisted and I told you so posts in every thread.

There will always be the glass half full/half empty outlook on life and that's fine, the board is all the better for it but it's when the board gets out of balance in either direction that it becomes a problem. It's just a shame that some can't recognise their own unrelenting negativity as it limits the amount & level of interaction and discussion they have with other posters.

I've put several people on ignore in the past day based on their work in the Beams threads. Prior to that, just had a couple.

Besides some threads becoming disjointed when people get sucked into responding, it makes things a lot better.
