Is this the first time that the top 5 draft prospects have not featured prominently in testing

Adelaide's recruits have traditionally featured highly in testing....can we draw anything from the results?

Edwards surprised me

Who do you think are the top 5 prospects? And why have you highlighted some people? Are they they people you think would be around our pick? In that case, you forgot Eric McKenzie who is probably a more ready made version of Reid.

Tippett intrigues me a bit.

Ben Reid's sprints are interesting but considering he is a stick figure, I would think that the pace would "fall off" a bit once he gains 15-20kg he needs to be a KPP.

Top 5 as regularly stated:

Gibbs, Gumbleton, Hansen, Sellar and Selwood (or Thorpe)

The players I have highlighted I would consider possible Adelaide targets .....unfortunately or fortunately two are Tippet who has some good reviews and Jarryd Allen.

Most of the other KPP are not testing amongst the elite...but at 193cm+ I suppose we don't expect that except maybe the beep test and time trials which Meesen and Angwin previously excelled at.

McKenzie is more touted as a key defender....something I wouldn't have thought we would consider.

Another basketballer recent in the game ....can play KPP and ruck....quite mobile with apparent heaps of development in him.....not skinny either.

I agree he has my ears pricked as well

He is over 200 cm and has a HUGE wingspan. If he is mobile and agile enough he would be a match up nightmare for any defence IMHO.

Is he a good mark and whats his kicking like? What about his skills below his knees? If he is a stiff then I would pass thanks.

Where abouts does Jarryd Allen come from?? Just intrigued as my son used to go to school with a Jarryd Allen up in the Riverland. Wondering if its the same w@nker

Exclusive to afl.com.au

In recent years the likes of Queenslanders Daniel Merrett and Brad Moran (via England) have made the transition from rival sports to Australian Rules. From there they have become AFL-listed players in a limited space of time. It is a remarkable achievement.

And this year, another emerging talent from the sunshine state is set to be taken in the November NAB AFL Draft, having previously played another sport.

For 199cm key forward Kurt Tippett, he has successfully switched from basketball - he represented the Queensland under-18 state side - and is on the verge of an AFL career and being fast-tracked through several AFL development programs.

Yet his efforts in this year's NAB AFL under 18 championships, along with his recent performance for The Allies against Victoria during Grand Final week, where he booted four goals, have been nothing short of outstanding, considering his limited time in the game.

"This is my second season. I'd have to say I've played about 40 games all up - maybe a couple more or a couple less - but I've really enjoyed my first two years and hopefully I can get a chance to go on and play at a higher level, which it'd be great," Tippett said at the NAB AFL Draft Camp in Canberra.

"I'd been playing basketball since I was 11, right through the ranks and played rep from under 12s to under 18s and enjoyed my basketball.

"I started playing football when I got roped in to play a school game of football with Ben Merrett, the son of Roger Merrett, and then we played in the school competition and won that and had lots of fun and then I got asked to play with the Gold Coast Stingrays and then we won the flag there … and then I crossed to Southport and had a good first year with (former Brisbane coach) Norm Dare there.

"Being into sport, I did always watch the footy on the TV - I can't say I followed anyone - but I certainly didn't know about this pathway right through, but when I first started playing, I was interested in having fun and playing with my mates.

"I just enjoyed the whole experience and now it's taken off to this … but I'll have to wait and see and my not counting my chickens yet, but it'd be a wonderful opportunity."

Tippett played his first match of football at the end of 2004 with his school, yet reflecting on his journey, he said it had been a "great ride" so far.

"It's been a buzz and I'm very grateful for the people that have helped me out and it's surreal to be surrounded by such great players at the moment and such great coaches, but I'm really excited and hopefully there are some good times to come in the future," Tippett said.

"I enjoyed a lot of sports when I was young, but playing basketball pretty competitively really taught me how to prepare and be professional and that's definitely carried over to football and I've worked pretty hard on my football, because I've had a lot of catching up to do and it's all paying off."

Tippett's ride into football has made him a tantalising prospect for AFL recruiters, with his further development an enormous upside. Already he has had a number of chats with AFL clubs.

"I've had a fair few interviews. I was lucky, I had a few with The Allies and then a couple again here, so hopefully come draft day I'm a chance," Tippett said.

One suspects he will be more than a chance

Now what do you think?

As we're getting Pick #14, will there be any decent KPP's around?

I seriously doubt Riewoldt will be around...Melb will probably snap him up by then.

Is S. Edwards a midfielder?
Is he a chance to be taken at 14?

Not surprised about Edwards performances - I really hope we get this lad as I think he has some rare qualities.
His dad was a beauty before he lost his sight .....but he was a skinny high flyer....taller than son.

The combination of height deficiency and being genetically slim .......jury is out

Edwards is a third rounder at absolute best

Of course there will be a good KPP at 14.....but they are all very different in profile so it's really hrad to read.

IMO we'll take two KPP...so the second choice which IMO probably would be third round could be anything ....this is where the recruiting team skills will be tested.

He is a key Defender which could free Bock up to play permanent CHF. Tippet is being talked up now. He's a bit risky but could be a gun. Many ex-basketballers have made good transitions to footy eg. Maric and Pendlebury. Tippet certainly has a lot of Upside. He is 19 though I think, 1 year older than most draftees...

I hope we can get Edwards with our second pick, 32 is it ?

He'll be brilliant, needs to put some weight on though

I dont see a lot of early picks there. We got Riggio with a second round pick and Swallow with a third round pick, surprised they went that low but it was a pretty even year.

This year a lot of the top picks are KPP types so they are not going to blitz on speed, agility or endurance tests. Seems all these tests are more for judging midfielders.

Most of the important stats are hard to quantify at those camps, like ability to take contested marks/disposals, awareness, reading play, lead to position, 1%ers, second/third efforts, etc.

Good call on the KPPs WW. If you have seen my earlier posts fom a few months ago I was singing both of these boys praises then.

These talls are likely to be picked up somewhere between 8-20.

My preference - Ben Reid - very young and will develop into a fine player a bit in the Buddy Franklin mould. Good left foot kick. Will take time , but he has all the makings of a gun player in 3-4 years time.

Would go for Tippett if he is taken?

Pity we are number 14 - but whoever is taken before will mean that we should pick up someone of quality.

Agree that the second pick may be even more important.

Pity about Chris Dawes. He was the other tall I really liked. If Biggles and Trent had not been cut down for the year I might have taken him early too. He is a beauty!!!

You can now see why Hart was not given another contract. With a very lop-sided age structure and the possibility of 8-10 players all retiring within 1-2 years we needed to start the process of revitalizing our list.

At the same time as we need to do this we have one of the deepest dfafts of all time. Have a look at some of the names on the Mock draft over 80 and you can see how deep the draft goes.

I also think this year there is a lot of talent available in the local league. Adelaide would be negligent to miss out on these key players when the talent pool is so deep.

I fear that one or two other players will also make way for the renaissance of our list begin.

I think we may trade certain players to try and get new third and even fourth round picks.

If we take risks in the draft there is a very good chance the loss of Goody, Roo, Edwards, Bassett, Biglands, McLeod, Torney, Doughty, Welsh, Hudson, etc in 2-3 years will be less traumatic.

The confidence in Maric and Meeson and Huddo to do the job next year is a sign that we will be prepared ot do this. The loss of a club legend, whom we all admire and respect is another.

Yes Dawes....very highly regarded....but with 2 major injuries we just can't carry a third can we?.....even though he would never play in 07 anyway??

Yes the quantity of talls really gives us a chance to unearth some talent for the future .....#14 will probably be know to us all at draft time, but the second tall well that's what's really exciting me

We will of course still take a midfielder at some point in the draft and the SANFL should really help the AFC either late in the draft, the PS or rookie draft

Draft kids dynamite
07 October 2006 Herald-Sun
Rebecca Williams

IT'S the national draft that recruiters have been talking about since well before Marc Murphy's name was read out at No. 1 last year.

And after three days of prodding, measuring, testing and interviews at the draft camp, little has changed the view of this year's crop of budding AFL stars.

It's a gem.

The popular view of this year's group is that it's the best since the famous 2001 draft that produced Luke Hodge, Luke Ball and Brownlow medallist Chris Judd.

"If we wavered towards thinking it wasn't the best (since 2001), I think we'll walk away from this thinking it's pretty close to the best," Melbourne recruiting manager Craig Cameron said.

This year's class boasts standout talent at the top, a string of quality talls and the depth to ensure there will be prizes well beyond the first round.

But the top picks aren't as clear-cut as in previous drafts.

Many recruiters agree there are possibly five names that would not be out of place being read out first.

For the past year, most of the talk has surrounded Glenelg's Bryce Gibbs.

He is the standout midfielder in the group, a poised and well-balanced playmaker who has played senior footy in the SANFL.

West Australian Scott Gumbleton is regarded as the pick of the key-position players. He is a 195cm key forward, who has played senior footy for Peel in the WAFL.

WA ruckman Matthew Leuenberger has also attracted plenty of attention. Gippsland defender Lachlan Hansen is another top key-position prospect, while Bendigo's Joel Selwood will come under strong consideration despite a year hampered by injury.

Gibbs' 195cm Glenelg teammate James Sellar is another who has been highly rated throughout the year. He can play as a ruckman or forward.

Adelaide recruiting manager James Fantasia said the No. 1 pick was still wide open.

"It's still up for grabs, I would suggest," Fantasia said. "There is clearly five or six players that could take the honours.

"It may well come down to the club's needs. We'll all be wondering until draft day for that one."

St Kilda recruiting manager John Beveridge agreed the top players were hard to separate.

"I don't know how Carlton are tracking or what they're deciding to do, but I think Gibbs, young Hansen from Gippsland, Gumbleton and Leuenberger have been mentioned fairly consistently as the top four," Beveridge said.

"It's a good group, but it's not an easy group to rate because it seems to be pretty even."

The quality of the talls is a feature this year, a fact not lost on Essendon coach Kevin Sheedy.

"It's probably not the fastest draft camp. But they said it was always going to be the tallest and they certainly got that right," Sheedy said.

Carlton recruiting manager Wayne Hughes is the man with the No. 1 pick.

Interesting comment from Sheedy saying it's not the fastest draft camp ......probably supported by some of the test results that I already posted that has some lesser names outshining the supposed stars

AFL trade week info
07 October 2006 Herald-Sun

The rules for AFL trade week.

Starts: Monday 10.30am Ends: Friday 2pm

Officials from the 16 clubs will formally meet on Monday at Telstra Dome from 10.30am to 2.45pm.

Trade rules
1. Clubs can trade a player for a player(s) from another club.
2. Clubs can trade a player for a pick(s) from another club.
3. This year, clubs can trade one or more national draft picks for the selections of another club, without a player involved in the swap.

Last year 13 players were traded from eight of the 16 clubs and 18 draft selections also were exchanged.

National Draft: Saturday, November 25.

All clubs must have at least three selections at the national draft, but there is no maximum. As such, any pick beyond Round 3 is dependent on whether clubs delist enough players to have those selections.

However, any traded selection must be used at the draft.

Looking forwrd to clubs being able to trade for picks in future drafts.......starting to get some support here

Whooda thunk it

Too many athletes...Luke Jericho I am looking your way...are drafted in the hope they can find some getting the ball ability.

Matt Priddis can be as slow as Greg Williams but he knows where to go to get the ball

I'd be very dissapointed if Ben Reid was avaliable and we didn't get him. Do the results mention his weight? I heard somewhere it was around 83 - 84kg's, which doesn't sound too bad for a bottom aged kpp.

his height isn't too shabby either

Edwards dominated!! No surprise at all, the kid is a gem. I really hope the Crows draft him so he can stay in Adelaide and play another season or two with the Roosters. He will develop into a star for the Crowies too.
