Re: 1st round draft pick 2010 (part deux)

Can we rename this the "Draft Discussion thread"? I'm far more interested in who we take at 26 and 28 than 4.

Re: 1st round draft pick 2010 (part deux)

C.Garlett as a rookie listed player guys? Played in the pre-season match at the start of the season I believe. Started the WAFL season well but finished not so strong.

What does the WCE public think? Swannies as a swan districts man what do you think? ;)

Re: 1st round draft pick 2010 (part deux)

What do people think of Anton Hamp? He did well in DC with a 71cm vertical jump and a 2.91s 20m sprint, so he's a powerful athlete. I've never seen him play so I'd really like to hear others opinions.

Looked good in his highlights video

Kevin Sheehan says: Anton is a versatile type who makes good position and has a good work ethic. He has clean hands and his pace is also a feature. He represented Western Australia at the under-18 championships.

In his own words
What type of player are you?
I am a key-position player who can play forward or back. I have mostly played forward this year (either FF or CHF) and as a temporary ruckman. I am a leading target who can connect the midfield with the forward line and can also kick goals.

Re: 1st round draft pick 2010 (part deux)

Rookie list? PSD?

Btw, is Blayne Wilson a KPD or just a tall defender ala Spang.

Re: 1st round draft pick 2010 (part deux)

Can we take him with our last pick or will that be to late?

Could depend on what our last pick is.

Fremantle might be looking to pick him up given their obvious lack of quality young talls. Im thinking they might look at him for the rookie draft.

Neither. Spangher was a third tall, had the height but not the strength to be a KPD.

Wilson is 187cm. Ala Waters and Butler.

Oh right, for some reason I assumed Wilson was KPD height.

I've heard he has midfield potential, if this is the case I'd actually be excited if we got him in the 2nd round.

Will the rule change of 3 interchange, 1 sub, affect our drafting strategy?
If so, how?
Gaff's endurance will become more valuable.
Heppell's versatility likewise.

Personally think it will significantly help us. A lot of our young midfielders and players are very much endurance athletes. Also cue the big q stick as our substitute all the time. Naita to go hard for 60% of the match then the Q to come on and relieve cox in the ruck/provide an option up forward. This isn't necessarily what i want but i can definitely see it happening. Only hope would be that any of your emergencies could be listed as substitutes but with the ability to only bring 1 on.

Not that it helps us but more doesn't affect us...
WC were not one of the high interchange teams. It was not part of the gameplan. Collingwood are going to be hindered a bit with Swan and a few other players. I'm glad they changed the rules also that they didn't use a cap. Injured players, young players, returning from injury players all need to be subbed off a lot - capping would prevent this.

For our picks I would prefer Heppell over Gaff ay #4 but either way I'm pretty either could slot very well into our team quite quickly, Gaff probably more AFL ready but Heppell with a higher ceiling.

At our second rounder and PP I would love Lamb to slide this far but I doubt that will happen. I think Mithcell could be worth taking as a replacement for Lynch eg. pitch hitting in the ruck and also as FF. I also love the look of Josh Green. Had a friend watch him play in Tassie and thinks he has the skills and pace to dominate at Subi.

So Heppell, Mitchell and Green for mine which I think fills our needs nicely.

After considering for a long time, i think i am on the Gaff wagon. Here is how i see it
Gaff is the girl who is your best friend, she is smart, beautiful, funny, caring, you have in jokes, you talk all the time, and she is secretly into you but you never consider her for a relationship because she doesn't have that wow or X factor. Now i know Polec is quick off a wing, and Heppell has a great kick, and Lynch has great endurance for a tall, but I think this is a very important draft and we don't want to screw it up. Thats why i think we should play it safe

We always hear the word "upside". to me it means little. all players will improve in an AFL system and while some may improve more than others it is incredibly hard to judge that from this early on. Mcdougall and Sampi had upside. Gaff has consistently beaten his opponents, which in the end is all you can do, has destroyed draft camp, and clearly has all the tools to be a very good to top line AFL player. Well thats what i think anyway...

......ok?

Heppell is similarly a safe pick. He has proven himself in all competitions and has few, if any faults to his game.
Polec admittedly is a bigger risk, but he fulfills a positional and characteristic need of ours.

We have a fairly "safe" young midfield already with players who know how to get the ball and can do it all day. Gaff doesn't add anything different to that. Heppell (through his excellent skills and marking) and Polec (through his pace, goalkicking and flair) do add something different, things we sorely lack.

based on that I would take Heppell, safe but with some flair thrown in
