I would think that we need a more in and under type with grunt to help Cripps out. SP-S has the skills by the sound of it but is he grungy enough to put his body on the line ? Is seems a bit like he is another Yarran in that he will use the ball well when given it, but does he get his own footy in the packs which is what we need more of............just how I see it !!!

SPS plays as an on-baller. Us supporters really need to get past this stereotype of seeing indigenous kids and assuming that they're all flankers and small forwards.

Must admit i haven't checked the grungy body on the line stats for a while but if you are looking for in and under grunt , apparently there will be a few likely types available at our 2nd pick .

like wise we need blokes to get the hard ball out to start the play, not finish it !!!
Can almost certainly find those attributes at our 2nd pick though.

If we think of the midfielders at 5 and 25 (if we take a mid) as a package. SPS and a bull at 25 might be more beneficial than Taranto/Brodie and the bull in the long term.

Very unlikely we'll find the attributes of SPS at 25. EP alluded to SPS being more likely at 5 than Brodie.

Also a chance we get Barrett to improve our inside stocks.

It was EP's use of the phrase "much more likely" that makes you think Brodie might be improbable. Someone else might be challenging SPS for the pick, but not Brodie...

...or....eric might be wwrrrrrrroooooo.......or just spitballin on this like all us.

Tim Taranto has CLASS guys.

So does SPS but more question marks over his tank and go home factor.

Interesting to see SPS spike in a big way after that little bit of info came our way.

Poor Taranto.........so unloved. :)

It may just be that the club has been over and spoken with SPS, WA prospects have finished there academic commitments and clubs are told to not make contact with the kids during there final exams.
It makes sense as the Vic kids would be off limits ATM and SPS would be in the frame for pick 5.

I'm still not sold on Taranto. Just think there are some massive question marks over his game.
Think if your going to be a half forward/mid you need to be a very good to elite kick inside 50, this is not one of Taranto's strengths.
He also looks a little one paced and not sure if he is clean enough by hand to make it work as an inside mid, at AFL level.
Think he is a player who has finished the year off in very good form and as a result his predicted range has sky rocketed.
Pick 5 is too high IMO.

His hands are elite actually. In close finds space and distributes with class.

Only issue is kicking but it's minor and could be fixed quite easily. The kid has played footy seriously for one year!

He's a player you need to watch 10 plus times to understand how good he is.

Taranto is a funny one. Yes he is a touch slow and one paced. Yes he is a messy kick off the boot sometimes and not technically elite.

But when you looked back after the siren in every big game this year, he consistently got the job done and the game won better than anyone else.

He could...could.... just be one of those special players like Hird or Swan or Bartel or Sloane.

Not pretty, but just keeps on starring and contributing to wins bigtime.

Agree Taranto does have the look and feel of something special, difficult to put into words perhaps X factor. Whether he's in the the top 5 talents in the land is another matter, to me he's a top 10 definely exactly were I'm nor sure.
But with our pick5 I'd have higher expectations.
Our top pick must have the potential to be an outstanding for a long time.

Quality post!
Personally I favour Brodie and SPS over him, but he delivers in big games and kicks goals and will tough to overlook.

SPS oozes class, something at the top of our needs list, though clearly not the only need. Ability on both sides is still uncommon at 18, so a good pointer of his ability. Probably more of a risk being an interstater, but I think you have to back your systems in at retaining him.

I don't know what it is about this years group but I'm struggling to find any real class in this batch of draftees.
I'm concerned that experts might be calling it deep because of the standard. Hope I'm wrong as we need pick 5 to be AFL standard.

Not sure we'll find those level of skills and class at #25, whereas there are likely to be more options for inside/clearance midfielders at 25.

I think SPS @ 5, with SPP (if available) or Drew @ 25 would be a great result for our first two picks.

I think the top end talent is slightly lower than previous years, but it is deeper

I think taking SPS is too big a risk. Need to stick with a Victorian. Personally either Brodie or Taranto will both be 200 Game players barring injury. Taranto also hits the scoreboard which is a great asset.

I can't look past Brodie at this pick but I wouldn't be unhappy with any of SPS, Taranto or Scrimshaw.

Venables and Florent I like but not for pick 5, and I'd hope both would be in contention for 25 should they be available. Hayward seems to be bolting into first round contention so he'd probably be in the conversation too at our second.

I have nothing against English but I don't want us going anywhere near a 19 year old ruckman at pick 5.

Only if Hayward can transition into a midfielder, doubt if he will standout as a forward despite the nine goal haul.
I'm warming to him at #25 if he's there, but not #5.

He really butchers the ball under pressure, and doesn't have the physical development of someone of a similar gamestyle, like Fyfe as a junior.
