Who do you rate as the best selection for pick 5?
Someone ready to step up in their chosen position from round 1 next year.

None of the mollycoddling nonsense where Pagan ruined Gibbs by playing him in the backline. No more project players in Yarran or Bootsma. No more 'sliders' like Lucas. No more 'we hope this kid can one day rotate the midfield' like Menzel.

The only players meeting that criteria in forever have been Weitering, Murphy and Kreuzer. I want a player we can throw in the deep end in round 1 and expect them to play 250 games for the club.

No excuses. And from the 'experts' on here that's Taranto, even if he doesn't have the ceiling of Setterfield, SPS, Ainsworth, Brodie, Bowes, McGrath or McLuggage?

Yes SPS says he wants to play in Melbourne now, however two years is a long time. Just ask Cam Macarthy.

Did McCarthy stipulate pre-draft that he wanted to get out of Perth and play in Western Sydney?

If not you're basing your argument on one player supposedly suffering mental health issues and wanting out to be closer to family.

How about the countless examples of players who have been drafted outside of their home state and have gone on to have long and successful careers?

Tambling was highly rated as well and we all know how that turned out.

Tambling was a talented junior who turned out to be a failure at AFL level like many before him, and indeed many after him.

Why you've chosen Tambling as the comparison I can only speculate and the reason isn't a particularly great one...

My point is we will have a choice of Taranto or Brodie and would immediately give depth to our midfield.

SPS would give depth to our midfield also, and could be right to go pretty well straight away.

He may not have as immediate an impact as the other two mentioned...but the recruiters have a responsibility to draft the best player for the long haul, not just for 2017.

With our drafting history this should a priority. Selecting someone like SPS is not what our list needs right now.

Maybe not, but you're yet to mount a legitimate case as to why you believe that to be the case.

I'd argue that SPS could well be the best of the lot...and talent is exactly what our list needs right now.

I watched the Vic Metro vs WA game last night and was so underwhelmed with SPS. The way some of you guys rave about him is extraordinary! I was expecting to see an inside/outside jet. Unfortunately I did not see that. He went large chunks of the game without any impact whatsoever. He had some nice disposals in the third quarter but if I went into watching this game without the hype I would not have noticed him at all. Not the kind of play we need. The risk is simply unacceptable. He is a flashy outside mid who won't have an impact on AFL games for years. What is wrong with taking the safe bet -'Setterfield, Taranto or Brodie.
So you watched one game and are willing to put a line through him? I watched the Vic M / Allies game on the weekend and could say the exact same thing about the "safer options" Taranto and Setterfield and Scrimshaw as well. If they didn't have hype you wouldn't have noticed them.

You could also go back and watch Bontempelli in his draft year and watch him struggle at the champs and make a strong case that the doggies should never have drafted him

SPS strikes me as more inside mid than RT was and thus a better prospect

I saw a fair bit of footage last year and Sam was winning plenty of ball in tight contests and using lovely side step and pace to find a way out and then hit targets

The issue with Sam is whether he can become a good consistent accumulator

Don't want a perennial 15 touch player at pick 5

SOS needs to know how he will pan out

SPS averaged 23.2 disposals in the WAFL this year and his kick/handball ratio was 2 to 1.

Where is this notion he is a 15 disposal player coming from? Even averaged 19 in his 2 champs games.

And this was coming back from a hamstring injury as well.

But ODN, he didn't get over 15 disposals in the WAFL last year, as a 16 year old...

Wanting someone to hit the ground running come round 1 next year, can be unrealistic at times. Some of the best players in the competition had limited game time in their first year.

I agree with you in terms of drafting someone at pick 5 that is considered a midfielder, rather than talented flankers that could become "A" grade midfielders

For me, the number one criteria, they must be able to win their own ball, on a regular basis. After that, whoever is ranked the highest for other facets/point of difference

I too think a traditional midfielder that can win his on ball and kick precisely beyond 40 meters, dual sidereal and high footy IQ.
Let's face It if a player up is selected to play in the engine room of a team these prerequisites are the minimum.
Of course if you can get Xfactor too, as in Sam case you have a champion on your hands.
Go Baggers

Well it's true that some mightn't cope with the initial workloads - Brodie tapered off this year and mightn't be fit to play 22 games. And Dangerfield had the talent but was simply too young.

By the same token, we shouldn't gift games to players (*cough* Clem Smith) but JW and Jack Silvagni this year showed by their third or fourth match that they weren't there just to make up the numbers.

Talent, a willingness to succeed and a competitiveness that they won't need 2 preseasons to become AFL-ready. Different with KPP, generally, but we're going for a midfielder here.

I think youtube assessments are quite limited. Its like betting on a horse - you need to go and have a look at the specimen in the flesh.

I got lambasted for putting up a V2 :) .............O.K. not quite lambasted but questioned.

I know we can change votes but we just won't.
O.K. I'll get V3 up, but maybe on the weekend.

By then we all would have well and truly settled on who we may realistically get, or who we may realistically want.

I'm going to start a poll.

How many poll threads will we have for pick #5?

V2.......vote
V3.......vote
V4.......vote
V5+.....vote
