Matt Balmer ( Afl draft central ) has released a 2 rd phantom.

No idea of his credentials but anything released now is worth reading.

Pick 1 - McGrath
Pick 2 - Taranto
Pick 3 - McCluggage ( no bid for Bowes )
Pick 4 - SPS
Pick 5 - Setterfield ( Matched bid )
Pick 6 - Ainsworth ( our pick )

I don't think this is totally unfair, this far out.

Actually, I'm not even sure what the perfect storm would be for us to take someone like Fyfe.
Would next year make for a great fit? I don't think we really know just yet.

..........anyway.......we hung onto pick #5 :)

Given where our list is at , giving up two first rounders for a mid age player is madness

FA is different though

Ainsworth will be a good player, but that would take the stuffing out of things with both Taranto & SPS gone before our pick.

Nice spot mate, he seems to have some info. So, if GWS did take Taranto and the recruiting staff at the lions have a raging erection over Ainsworth like their fans do............. Maybe McCluggage isn't such a pipe dream?

Wil Hayward may bolt even further just yet who knows for sure, drawing more attention as a bolter into top 10.
Perhaps SOS may reach just a little to get the player he wantS?

I'm all over Hayward. I think he is definitely top 5 in this draft in regards to his potential, not necessarily his output for the whole year, and would actually be thrilled to get him at 5. The all stars game confirmed it for me coz he had some midfield minutes and handled himself well. I'd prob just choose Taranto over him just because he's a safer option, but would have no qualms in reaching at 5 for him.

I'm no expert in picking talent but from what I have seen from him he always avoids kicking on his opposite foot. Giving up a high pick who is limited in one of the most important aspects of the game of footy is a massive risk for a club that is in the position we are in. Maybe a club in the top 8 that already has much better list depth than our would take that risk. Definitely go Taranto over Hayward

I don't think it's a huge issue IMO, Simpsons been doing it for 10+ years, although it is a fair comment and it would definitely be mentioned by our recruiters. I believe his potential clearly outweighs his deficiencies, one of which is his kicking ability, although it's not that bad. Just saw he got an invite to the draft from Twomey's phantom, so someone rates him top 10.

If the player projects a huge upside, the 'reach' is worthwhile.
Was Fyfe a reach at pick #20 in 2009?

I know one won't find a Fyfe every year, but if Hayward, or anyone else for that matter, does rate high in all the categories we require of a player/character, then why not?

While I can see the similarities, no one took a bet on Fyfe until the second round, and he was coming from a fair more competitive league than the SANFL colts.

Additionally, what sets Fyfe apart is how much of his athleticism remains despite how much he's packed onto his frame, and let's not ignore that we're not even sure he's going to be the same player again after stress fractures and fractures.

Does Hayward share all of these attributes? No, but he shares a considerable few, and is arguably much quicker off the mark. That being said, Fyfe might be a more up-and-under kick in his field disposal, but in front of goal it has served him well.

Hayward has to become a guy who can consistently get the ball out after contact to be as dominant as Fyfe (something I don't think Brodie does well at all). I don't see that happening, so I don't think he has the value. I can, however, see it happening with Scrimshaw.

Agreed. This would be an old Carlton move. Embrace the rebuild.

Fyfe is a FA at the end of the year, albeit a restricted one.

If it costs us nothing other than $ to bring him across then it is an absolute no-brainer to do it.

I don't see bringing in Fyfe as a FA being a move jeopardizing or moving away from the rebuild.

SPS or Taranto for me

If free agency was around when we picked up Judd and was then able to keep Kennedy, Pick 3 and 20 then it would be near certain we'd be currently sitting in at least premiership cup number 17.

However, if Fyfe ends up costing draft picks/players like Dangerfield did then I fully agree

How about we just wait to see how he has recovered from fracturing his leg for the 3rd time

Except if the size and length of his contract means we end up losing irreplaceable younger talent.
