G'day guys

I'm O/S with work at the moment, and have limited net time, could anyone give me a "soldiers five" on our drafts picks please?

Thanks

Smokey

We went with a pretty flexible theme taking complimentary players who could potentially fit into our team nicely if given time.

Stocked up on a couple of forwards since our forwardline is looking fairly shallow with both Lockyer and Medhurst retired.

Picks:
45: Alex Fasolo: Relative bargain and could have gone as high as Fremantle at 20. Ready to go kid who can play forward + midfield well. Stands at around 180cm, but plays taller than his height. Think of him as a goal kicking mid. Strong overhead. Good in trafic. Good decision maker and good by foot. One of the better players to come out of WA. In a bottom 8 side might have managed a couple of games but at Collingwood expect him to start to push for a spot from season 2.

46: Daniel Farmer: Stoked to get this guy and coming into the draft he was one of the players I really wanted. Half forward flanker with the versatility to play anywhere. Really dangerous player around 188cm with a nice long kick, strong overhead, has pace and feels like a real weapon on a forward flank. In short I think he will prove to be a really good value pick at this stage. Won't play right away but late season 2 - season 3 he should be pushing for a position in this team.

60. Kirk Ugle: Really short kid at 171cm. Reminds me allot of Jarryd Blair and possesses similar attributes. His standout quality is his speed. Ugle can play both midfield or forward well but expect him to start out as a forward. There was some talk West Coast were going to take Ugle at 29, but in the end they went tall. Not a huge Ugle fan and thought possible Matthew Rankine might have been a better alternative with a little more upside. Ugle isn't ready to go, but if any of these draftees play in season 1 I think Ugle might be the one because he probably will start off in a forward pocket.

76: Paul Seedsman: Another 188cm kid? Coincidence? I think not. Very, very skinny kid and very, very outsideish. Seedsman is a mid who likes to get forward and kick a goal. Skills are generally pretty good and speed is ok without being a standout feature. Really needs to hit the gym, pack on some muscle and win some of his own contested footy. Won't be seeing this one for a couple of years and is strictly a "project player". Earliest he might push for a position in this team is season 3. Not a huge fan, but from a late pick like this really all you can do much of the time is hope for the best.

77: Trent Stubbs: Stubbs is a really interesting one and was part of the Hawthorn NSW/ACT scholarship program. Haven't watched Stubbs play because I never pay a whole lot of attention to any of the NSW boys, but those who have seen him have liked him allot and in 2009 he had a few really good games in the u18 champs. Hawthorn curiously let Stubbs go and were not willing to take a chance on him for a position on their senior list so he entered the draft and we were first to pounce. Stubbs is a medium forward with is strong overhead and has good speed, endurance, skills. Heard a few people knock his attitude but we'll just have to wait and see what comes of this one.

Jarryd Blair + Lachlan Keeffe have both been promoted from the rookie list and we have senior listed Tom Young who was our own NSW/ACT scholarship player who had a fantastic season for us at VFL level.

Of these I have a fair bit of confidence in Fasolo, Farmer and T.Young. The others are really just wish and hope for the best which generally with late picks, 60+ is really all you can do.

Wait till you see his goal kicking ability under pressure.
Which is something that plenty of other players that aren't Daicos can do.

He's nothing like Daicos because no one is anything like Daicos. Alan Didak is nothing like Daicos and he's significantly more talented and spectacular to watch than Alex Fasolo.

It's an unreasonable comparison to make, like comparing a draftee to Nathan Buckley because he's a really good kick - It's still a long way to go before they belong in the same discussion.

You may want to talk to Chris Scott about this as he compared George Horlin-Smith to Buckley. So we missed out on a Buckley but got a Daicos.

Sorry Vinnie, all players get compared to greats when they come into the system.

That is the nature of the way it is done.

lets say there is some brilliance in the guy.

leave it there.

hope he gets up to prove it.

Would've been the way to go to begin with.

Players need to have more than one slightly similar attribute to a great to be compared to them.

But that is what happens. Read all the draft analysis type articles. they compare players to champions all the time. At 17 or 18. It spices up the debate.

Putting on my Kent Brockman hat for a minute, the comparison the sticks out to me for our draftees is Paul Seedsman/Blake Caracella.

Looks to have that ability to hit up a target and make it look easy - if he deveops I can see him becoming a valuable "score assist player" as well as a goalkicker - playing perhaps a half forward/high half forward role.

Similar build too. If memory serves Caracella took quite a while to become a regular senior player being another scrawny type when drafted.

My 2 cents.

Sure, but they're generally based on a lot more than just one sole attribute, such as kicking goals under pressure.

Seems we have determined that we wouldn't get anything from the draft to make any impact in 2011 so we took players needing dvelopment after trading the early picks for players able to play senior football right away.

Be interesting to watch the NSW boys.

By the way, good write up knightmare

"Soldier's five"?? WTF?

.

a "soldiers 5" is term that the australian army uses when someone is needed to give a quick brief (i.e 5 minutes) on a situation or explain how to use a bit of new kit

am guessing that the OP is serving overseas and is on extremly shitty dial-up and needs to get his collingwood fix

edit: sorry just saw the above explanation

not meaning to criticise you knightmare but you say you're not a huge fan of ugle/seedsman, kind of an interesting statement considering i'd back my balls you've never seen them play.
Ugle played country footy all year besides 4 games of wafl colts. Seedsman was not on the radar at all, played school footy for all but a few games.
Lets face it, amateur footy watchers like us struggle to see enough of the main guys, let alone off the radar types.
