I think moving up the ladder with a level of seriousness and competing for finals in 2028 is a real possibility.

We've had a couple good drafts of late, we will have another one this year, so by 2028 I can see the following core helping win us games and rise.

Mccarthy (28 - 4th year of AFL)
Hough (25 - 7th year of AFL)
Hewett (24 - 6th year of AFL)
Ginbey (24 - 6th year of AFL)
Harley (23 - 5th year of AFL)
Shanahan (22 - 4th year of AFL)
Duursma (21 - 3rd year of AFL)
Pick 2 (21 - 3rd year of AFL)

That list will still be young, and might not be enough for finals quite yet, but I'm expecting us to start bringing in mature talent by then like Chad Warner etc. so that's why I think 2028 is really possible. With any luck we will hit real hard on one of our other early draft picks from 2026 or 2027 and find ourselves an Ashcroft type who's ready to contribute right away.

We should have decent depth around these centrepieces given how much young talent we will have cycled through by then, including all the NGAs. Plenty of other guys with potential to get into the tier listed above as well like:
Maric, Allan, Gross, A Reid, pick 13.

An interesting mock! With Duursma at 7. CDT and Sharp to us.
Where did you find that? That's basically pick 3 for Duursma without trading.

On YouTube - can't recall the guys doing it, Think he is a Freo fan as the anchor jumper was proudly displayed in the background. IF YOU find it on YouTube and listen to it, his reasoning is sound.

Is it the app guy?

It's Dart's Mock Draft / [link]

Thanks for sharing. I've just listened to the first few picks and I tend to agree with his reasoning.

Assuming we pick up CDT we need to give him the keys to the ruck/ 4 mid straight away. If we are investing heavily into a Luke Jackson lite roll he needs to be developed and given the keys asap more reps he gets the better long term

If we draft CDT, he'll spend most of his first year in the WAFL.

I wonder how true that is. Archer Reid and Jack williams played 14 and 13 games this year respectively.
I personally don't see any reason why he couldn't successfully compete for a spot in the team against those guys. I would be dissapointed if he couldn't displace Jack Williams based on his output this year.

18 and 16 games for Flynn and B williams. Think those will be harder for him to compete with in year one, but it's not impossible if he has a really good pre-season given how average they are.

I cant really be bothered listening to it, but what how could he reasonably explain skipping the best talent ?
The short version is that he doesn't rate Duursma as the best player in the draft

He has some elite traits.

Particularly in a weak draft, with mid-range picks, you look for elite traits and try to build a solid footballer around that.

Guys that are good at everything, often get found out at AFL level when everyone else is stronger, bigger, fitter and faster.

Fred's pre-draft profile basically mimics Clay Hall's. I don't think we need to keep doubling down on those types. We need to see if what we've got already can develop and play.
ok, point of difference then and get Curtin instead of Frod. Although Frod has a much better tank than Hall and can kick off both sides very well.
There are solid footballers with less athletic profiles that are more viable picks than Williams. The kids at the top of the draft tend to have both good footy skills and good athletic profiles. Use the later picks to find kids with the good footy IQs on them not kids with good athletic profiles that we might be able to turn into good footy brains

1. Duursma (West Coast)
2. Duff-Tytler (West Coast)
3. Robey (Richmond)

4. X Taylor (Richmond)
5. Cumming (Essendon)
6. Sharp (Essendon)
7. Grlj (Melbourne)
8. Schubert (Melbourne)
Is it clear cut for CDT at pick 2? There seems to be some whispers that he could slide. I know there is plenty of love on here for Sharp, but I feel like it will come down to CDT vs Robey at pick 2.

CDT had plenty of haters on here for a long time but some have come around now. Robey hasn’t got the runs on the board but when things clicked for him late in the season it was very impressive. All draftees are speculative, but these two have plenty of question marks to go along with their high ceiling.

So if you sat in the Eagles final draft meeting, and had the last say to split the vote between Robey and CDT, who would you take?

CDT the athletic freak ‘unicorn’ ruck/forward, who lacks ruck craft, but then does it matter? Tim English coming off AA went almost a full season without winning a hit out differential. Our tall forward prospects are strong so where do we play him? Or do you just back the talent regardless? New ruck rules and extended interchange, versatility can’t be a bad thing? If Luke Jackson can play as a part time midfielder then maybe CDT can too.

Robey the prototype explosive, physical big bodied mid/forward. Small sample size of his best form but it came at the right time. Is he a flash in the pan or can we cut him some slack due to a huge growth spurt and role change? We need mids so badly, but is he the right type with Harley and Elijah, or again do we back the talent and the more the merrier attacking mids to suit our run and gun game plan? If he doesn’t cut it as a full time mid maybe he ends up as a Zurhaar/Stringer type, best case he could be in the Petracca/De Goey mould.

FWIW I don’t mind the idea of splitting and taking Sharp/Cumming at 5 & 6. But I’m curious if it came down to Robey vs CDT who people would pick as both are maligned in their own way. Especially if we weren’t sure to land another decent mid with our next pick and with Duursma possibly being more of a utility than a pure mid.

For that reason it would sway me to Robey. We need midfielders more than KPP, and as has been mentioned there is good ruck prospects in the next 1-2 years.

Would love to move 13 up to 9 and have Sharp slide there, end up with Duursma, Robey and Sharp. But more likely we might land Farrow at our third pick which would still be okay.
