Perhaps we would have taken McCarthy as the project tall and gone for a more developed tall with the 2nd. Regardless of how we got them I am pretty happy with that combination, and a very clear emphasis on marking and running.

With Clarke unable to establish his forward credentials there is a door open. Hannath may be feeling some competition. There is certainly a lot of tall timber around, with more to come next year down back.

We are going to have to keep Clarke around by dangling the first ruck position to him for when Sandi retires. It seems to me Freo have decided Clarke is a ruck option only.
Next years draft is going to rock. We will almost be free to take whoever we want with no real consideration about position.

Maybe Leon Cameron is still wondering just what might have been if his old team, the Dogs, had an extra KPF or two?

'Cause he certainly aint gonna be left wondering at his current campaigner of a club.

GWS know that they will lose some players, they've stockpiled forward talent that they can trade in the future. This is surely the forward thinking they've done (no pun intended).

I don't think that plan really works though because when the talent actively wants to leave the club losing the talent doesn't have much leverage in making a fair trade happen.

we're gonna be flush in the forward line in a couple of years with mccarthy and hogan coming home.
It's going to be damn hard to get both. My first thought when gws took McCarthy was that they plan on trading him in a few years and they know they can get something good for him from us. Watch us offer something a lot more than #17 for him in a few years.

Epic lol, GWS have already earmarked McCarthy for a role down back:
"We just think it's difficult to find talls. We see him as a possibility to play back. He's got an outstanding work rate and we saw him as the second best tall in this draft." Stephen Silvagni
We'll see him in 2 years.

Happy to get Apeness, he is massive and good height for us. Wish we got Giles with our next pick or even Marsh (but from all reports, he isn't a quality footballer.. time will tell) If we manage to get Lester-Smith and Throp in the rookie draft, absolute bargains.

Certainly different than I thought we'd go but then again they have a whole team of recruiters watching these guys over a long period & access to all sorts of information to assess them on.

Gotta trust their call.:thumbsu:

I was WTFing back in the Sheridan, Crozier, Forster, Neale, Sutcliffe draft.. wondering about the players we took when other 'better' players were available.

Now look... 4 of the 5 are breaking into the senior team and the two last picks played in the grand final, with a 3rd as an emergency

In Bondy I trust

Have to admit so was I. But Neale at pick 70 something has been a revelation, Sutcliffe went from being sub majority of his career to starting in the GF and Sheridan was an emergency. That draft ended up nicely, with all of us questioning WTF Bond was doing.. In Bond we trust.

Spot on. The less we know about them, the more I think they might be good.

And Spurr and a RP. He played like a jet this season.

I remember thinking - 'who the **** is Sheridan?' and then we took another skinnny tweener with our 3rd skinny tweener pick in a row (pick 20) with Croz 'oh great another project player, but with great highlights, but another project player' ... I was hoping we'd snag Kavanagh or Kersten or Yeo... We did alright in retrospect, so what the **** do I know.

Have to agree. Especially when the departing player hasn't played much in the seniors. Can hardly call them a required player and demand top picks for them.

Don't know what GWS are thinking. We can let them bulk McCarthy up for 2 years, then get him to come home for a 2nd rounder.
