Of course, the reason they wore the green vest so often is because the gulf in talent between them is as wide as the Pacific Ocean.
So it had nothing to do with experience, especially in M. Crouch's case?

How about we compare M. Crouch with his peers?

http://www.footywire.com/afl/footy/ft_player_rankings?year=2015&rt=RA&st=CL

Ranked3rd amongst his peers/Rising Stars in the AFL

1. Patrick Cripps 79.6% T.O.G.
2. Nick Graham 67.5 % T.O.G.
3. Matt Crouch 59.8% T.O.G.

Here's the problem...
  • Brad Crouch is perpetually injured. Who knows if/when he'll be able to run to a centre bounce without injuring himself.
  • Thompson is likely to retire at the end of 2016.
  • CEY, Grigg, Lyons are all quantity - not quality.
  • Gore is a complete unknown at this stage.
That leaves Sloane, Douglas and Matt Crouch. Sloane & Douglas are both high quality, but neither are primarily inside midfielders. Both are adept at playing that role, but they're not monster clearance winners in the same class as Dangerfield & Thompson. Matt Crouch is primarily an inside midfielder, but he's still a significant step down from what Dangerfield & Thompson provided.

To put this into context, here are the league rankings & averages for clearances in 2015:
7th - Scott Thompson - 7.19 (clearances per game)
8th - Patrick Dangerfield - 7.17
54th - Rory Sloane - 4.33
58th - Richard Douglas - 4.19
60th - Cam Ellis-Yolmen - 4.09
64th - Matt Crouch - 3.94
100+ - Jarryd Lyons - 2.85

The gulf in class, when it comes to clearances, between Thompson/Dangerfield and the rest of our list, is as wide as the Pacific Ocean.

Long on quantity... desperately short on quality.
Excellent analysis .....thorough and spot on

Hence why i wanted Curnow and Oliver as first choice (assuming Francis/Milera gone) ......we just have to replenish the inside mids

Watched Knight today .....forget Neale, this Knight can transition into the midfield without any drama, and we have wings/flanks well covered

He's not an inside mid???

First I've heard of him going anywhere near that high.
he is only a little bit behind milera imo a gun.
a part of me still hopes we will get both him and milera.

I guess we can all agree on one thing - Milera should be a priority with our first pick. Crow through and through, fills a need, has some very elite traits in which we are lacking somewhat. Would be the perfect player just about.

The way crow's fans act when Betts gets the ball can only imagine how they will act if we get milera.

Ok understood .......so your preference in order is?
h mckay , weid, b mckay , burton, collins , himmelberg

Mine is
H.McKay (forward)
Burton (if medically ok) (Forward/Mid)
Weideman (Forward)
Himmelberg (Forward)
B.McKay (Defender and Forward)
Another Midfielder

Collins
More like for one of the picks as I think we need at least 1 KP .....not my overall preference which is more like

Milera/ H McKay/ Francis/ weidemann / Ah Chee/ Collins/ Burton / Hibberd/ Balic/ tucker

I wonder how the league average rankings will change without Danger and Thompson in our clearances, replaced by two other players.

Because you can't have six AFC players getting high average clearances per game, as there are only so many stoppages per game.

I expect Matt Crouch will gain significantly more average clearances per game next year due to Dangerfield simply not being at stoppages

Really in our whole list who are our inside mids?

First 22 Inside Mids: Thompson, M. Crouch
Backup Inside Mids: CEY, Lyons, Gore

First 22 Inside/Outside Mids: Sloane, Douglas, B. Crouch
Backup Inside/Outside Mids: Grigg, Atkins

Our predominant inside clearance winners will be Thompson and M. Crouch.

Sloane, Douglas and B. Crouch will also float through stoppages, with players like Smith, Knight, Hampton, Henderson, and others on the outside

You're right in terms of players available .....but wrong in saying Essendon's decision is irrelevant

Their decision could affect whether we get Francis or not .......now you may not have any interest and may not even watch the telecast at that point ......but i sure as hell will be watching intently what Essendon and Melbourne do

The Players i want depend on earlier decisions ......i guess you're comfortable taking whoever

Last year weall watched intently to see if Lever would drop ......are you saying zero interest in this scenario?
Would I like Francis? Absolutely. But Essendon's decision just eliminates him as an option, crossing a name off the order of merit. There's not a damn thing we can do to influence the decision. Francis is there, or he's not.

You need a bit more emotion in your football ;) .......you can be too objective

Me...I'll be sweating over every clubs call before our picks

Forget Crows fans, I hope the Cats flogs who said they wouldn't do a deal grimace whenever he gets the ball

So after all the YO-Yoing ......we're still a chance for my boy Curnow

Think though if it's Curnow v Home Grown ......i think we'll go home grown

There are a finite number of hitouts/clearances to be won, and we'll assume it's fairly constant (i.e. Jacobs performs similarly in 2015 and 2016).

These hitouts will be directed to different players (i.e. Matt Crouch instead of Dangerfield). The question is what % of taps Crouch converts to clearances, compared to the % converted by Dangerfield & Thompson. Dangerfield & Thompson received most of the taps, because they were the best at converting.

End result - Crouch's clearance numbers go up, but we're still well down overall compared to Dangerfield/Thompson.

My guess.. Crouch will go from a 4-clearance-per-game player to a 6-clearance-per-game player. Similarly, one or more other players will step things up as well. I think the overall team will end up being down 3-4 clearances per game, compared to a midfield with Dangerfield/Thompson. Losing 3 clearances per game would drop us from 4th (40.6 per game) to 14th (37.6 per game).

Rioli is a bigger surprise....

What position was he?

I wouldn't be surprised if he went earlier than expected. His overall combine results were on point and he showed some good signs throughout the year as well. Having that last name probably helps a little too.

The best WA talent always seems to have slid retrospectively. The Vic clubs must not have as many recruiters in WA as they do SA. Wouldn't surprise me if Ah Chee has been underrated.

I agree with this, which is why I think we need to draft a predominately inside midfielder if possible/available

Pick 15 with Richmond's 1st, effectively Pick 11 after Academy picks taken into account. He is one player I do have some personal intel on having watched him live this year in the TAC Cup Comp, does some flashy plays but goes missing a hell of a lot, surely if he goes that high the club is doing a hell of a lot of projecting into the future, had hardly rated a mention prior to the combine other than he was a Rioli.

I fear for Wayne's World sanity if the draft doesn't go the way he prefers it.
Nah ....what can you do

It's just num-nufts who post willy-nilly without any forethought or research that irritate me

Happy to debate reasonably put arguments

That said .....my signature says it all
