They're taking (at least) two picks. Hawthorn guarantee Newcombe they'll take him in exchange for putting a price on his head that guarantees he'll be there at a late pick.
There was a short video update on the AFL website that suggested the AFL still needed to tick off on the terms; I suppose if they thought choosing specific terms in an attempt to deter other clubs constituted draft tampering they might block it.

Ugh. No more below standard kicks please.
His hands are really really good though. I am undoubtedly very biased about this but I really want him in our midfield haha. Plus he can play forward too.

For a player to make it as midfielder that can’t kick they’d have to be a 6’4” Greg Williams clone...
Well he is 193 cm and about 90 kg.

Oddly enough he has a solid set shot routine,

Dylan Clarke is alright in front of the sticks too, but in general play his kicking is more of a liability than his positives can offset it seems
He's a better field kick than Clarke. His field kicking isn't great but when I said "below average" I didn't mean horrible.

From what I’ve read on him would be happy if the HS was correct and we take Preston. I don’t rate Baker.

Curious on your thoughts (re Baker)?

All the games I have seen of the VFL, he has been one of the more ready guys to play AFL. Maybe a little on the cumbersome side but skills are reasonable and he has size and physicality to play games and early.

For me the needs are:
  • Small Backs: other than Hird who is miles off it, we have no dedicated back depth behind Hind/Redman/Heppell. And Heppell ain't a spring chicken. We can play guys in the position (Cahill/Smith/Zaka/Guelfi) but none of them are really defenders. Between the MSD and ND we probably need two.
  • Midfielders: Currently our only depth is Cahill. Sure we've got bad injuries here, but let me run that again. We currently have one depth midfielder left. Frankly, it doesn't matter if they're inside or outside, we need more.
  • Small Forwards: We have Cahill and Johnson, but Johnson looks a bit off. Mozzie has question marks. This area probably needs bolstering, although Waterman looks good as does Perkins.
Between the MSD and ND we probably want 4-5 smalls, and if a few are options in multiple positions (such as wing/HF, wing/HB) it wouldn't go astray. If we had two picks in the MSD based on what I've read I'd quite like Clark and Preston (based entirely on reading about them here and elsewhere). Clark is inside/outside good mark big size. Preston is wing/HF, good pressure, speed, overhead and user. .

I like to proviso you are going with (re: bulk smalls) and ifany reason to overlook talls it is purely age demographic. Don't want a number of guys fighting for the same position as each other around the same age. Never ends well if none make it.

I do agree that these are the three positions I would like addressed with our next half dozen live draft picks (Mid season, national, rookie), with the success our starting midfield has had this season, perhaps that big bodied mid isn't the be all and end all, a running mid wouldn't be out of my thinking.

A small forward is high on my agenda however most are set and sold on the Davey boys already (even though 2022 draft) but a small forward needs to be in our planning imho.

Small (medium) defender is ironic with how many we have identified and tried to turn over the years.

Being ready to play AFL is way down my priority list. IMO he’s simply not good enough and I don’t think he’ll transition up.

If the Hawks/Suns game doesn't go ahead, do you think they'll postpone the MSD? That game, more than any other, will have an impact on the ladder order:

- If the Hawks win and Collingwood loses, they swap ladder positions
- Gold Coast win and St. Kilda and Adelaide loses, the Suns leapfrog both teams - not to mention the other scenarios where only one of the Saints or Crows win.

They'll probably put it in the too hard basket, but postponing the draft would be the fair thing to do if that game was cancelled.

St. Kilda are playing North, I think they're safe.

Fortunately for all of us, there is nothing the AFL wants more than for things to be fair and balanced, making well thought out and reasoned decisions, so you can be assured they will do the right thing here...

Sorry for the intrusion and i could not readily see an active thread but just curious to see where kaine baldwin is at. How is his recovery from knee surgery going. Really hope he can get past his injury and show the league just how good he is. Thanks for any info in advance

Seems like he’s doing a lot with Hurley in the rehab group judging by the photos and the fact that they’re both coming off long layoffs.

Not sure he’s at the stage where he can really do anything yet so hard to gauge progress other than he’s handsome and built like an absolute bloody house.

Always a mid to longer term proposition. I still think when he gets clear of injury (fingers crossed for him) you guys are going to have a very good player on your hands. Thanks for the info
