So they've changed the rules because of the outrage over an incident which they wouldn't have changed their decision on. Ha good one FA refs

The outrage hasn't just been about the Spurs call..

Spurs have been on the end of two ridiculous ones in successive weeks actually. The one against Southampton where it ricocheted off one Spurs defender onto another (ball heading out) was equally ridiculous.
It's not new for us. Lucas last season. Sissoko season before that

Some sanity prevails - still a stricter interpretation than previous seasons (article goes on to say the Dier and Maupay penalties would stand), though some of the penalties awarded this season would not have
Is the Maupay one really that crazy? Surely would have been given in previous seasons.

Would the Koch MD1 still be a penalty? Feel like there's going to be a whole lot of grey area now, which is probably more fun.

Easily, arm up and away from the body. Similar to Maupay.

Just noticed it mentioned it still would be because the ball travelled some distance - I guess some people still don't realise it took a huge deflection off his leg?

Probably because it didn't..

I'm not sure what the difference is going to be then?

The difference is they are not going to give handball against a player who has the ball played into them at close range with their arms by their side even if they move towards the ball. Ie the Everton pen against Palace.

If you look at the rules a deflection is irrelevant if arms are in an unnatural position. No pen against Koch if theres a deflection and his arms are by his side.

You seriously need your eyes checked.

It literally ricocheted off of his thigh into his hand.

It brushed past his thigh on the way to hitting his hand but there was no serious deviation of the ball. Serious straw grasping over a stonewall penalty from Leeds supporters.

"Brushed"

Geeze you're right, the ball is firmly planted on the ground in that image.

How about now Stevie Wonder?

Fair chance the ball deflected that much it would have missed the goals completely had it not hit his hand.

Weren't you a ref?

Between this and the Jota handball, you aren't having a great fortnight....

What handball?

In the above it does take a deflection but it doesn't meaningfully change the direction of the ball. His arm is out unnecessarily, pretty clear handball.

What a weird thing to bring up, yes I was a ref about four years ago for a season and knew the rules as they were written then, and I would have paid the above as a handball penalty under the rules then, and under the rules now.

The rules state a ricochet is irrelevant if arms are up. Not sure why this keeps getting raised re Koch penalty.

OK fair enough.

I'd love to know what your definition of a deflection is then.

That ball is clearly on target then clearly off target following the deflection off his leg.

The fact that people are stating his arm is so far away from his body, contradicts the fact that it could have been a small deflection.

Yes, but as stated above, it's a grey area as to whether it would be handball under today's interpretation.
