Actually, found this on PL site

This is all well & good, but the fact remains his arm is behind his body....Both the refs & VaR's interpretation here are rendered null & void because of that fact.

Defending this BS is laughable.

Is the Maupay one really that crazy? Surely would have been given in previous seasons.
Was a header heading towards goal, he was looking at the player/ball.. as much as I hate United it seemed an easy one.

No, the article stated it wouldn't be given. That's what I'm trying to wrap my head around.

I was thinking maybe ESPN got it wrong. But the article in the Telegraph also says the Doherty one would not be a pen, without explaining precisely why. Unless they are saying Doherty's arm was in a natural position and he didn't have time to react.

The move was also said to be backed by referees’ chief Mike Riley, who is behind the Premier League’s more lenient interpretation of the law for handball offences where a player’s arm or hand is not raised above shoulder level.
That new interpretation will consider the following factors:
  • Whether the arm is in an expected position given a player’s action, including whether it is being used for balance and/or protection.
  • Where it is clear that the player does not have the ability to react.
  • Whether the contact with the arm clearly blocks a direct shot towards the goal.
Half of the six penalties awarded for handball this season would not have been given under the new interpretation: Crystal Palace’s at Manchester United, Everton’s at Palace, and – most controversially – Southampton’s against Tottenham.
The other half – Liverpool’s against Leeds United, Manchester United’s at Brighton & Hove Albion, and Newcastle’s at Spurs – would still be punishable, the latter two under the “shoulder level” clause.

The 'shoulder level' clause? Paywalled for me but Koch's arm while certainly outstretched for balance, was below shoulder level.

Devil's advocate would also say he had no time to react to the deflection (point 2) and after the deflection the ball was no longer heading toward goal (point 3).

When you are referring to natural and unnatural position there is always going to be a fair amount of grey area.

No, they are saying the Dier one would still be a pen because of the shoulder level clause.

The confusing one is the Doherty pen.

Maupay handball is a stonewaller. Hes not even challenging for the ball, has his arms up. The only reason it wasnt picked up by the ref was because it was a small deflection.
It was the most deliberate arm action since Peter Caven headbutted Tony Lockett.

Anyway back to this game week and how Kyle Walker and John Stones are going to contain Gjanni Alioski.

Is he one of your U23s?

the subplot of City v Leeds is waiting to see Guardiola perform fellatio on Biesla at the end of the game. (Safely assume this will happen based on comments read from BigFooty Leeds fans)
Can’t argue with that, all us Leeds fans talk about it...
Apparently pep thinks bielsa is a good manager. Wonder if any media will mention that this week.

The men love each other. Bielsa, like many of us, were in awe of Pep’s brilliant Barca team that swept all before them.

And similarly, Pep often recalls that brilliant Athletic Bilbao side that finished 10th that one time under Bielsa.

Two titans of the game going head to head. Bring it on.

You reckon maybe there's a reason I sarcastically brought it up?

Pep admires him that much that he’ll even try and slip him a note during the game.

Love how salty people get over Bielsa.

Why would anyone in here be ‘salty’ over a manager who has never achieved anything in England?

You would have to ask them I guess?

I'm guessing because Bielsa is taking precious attention and press away from their revered managers of choice? Whiny posts all over this forum already.

Or people just find it comical. I haven’t seen anything in the media about it as I don’t watch it. I get most of my news through here :)

5 pages and we haven't even had a ******* match yet. Calm down Leeds fans.
This soccer board has somehow become worse, I could barely read a lot of it before now.. meh, I skip literally everything 🤷‍♂️
