I hurt because we’re sh*t, and have been for a long time. My point is, winning a few meaningless elimination finals here and there doesn’t change that. Say we won an elimination final one year over the past 15. Who cares? Other clubs have done that and been just as sh*t - and shitter - than us.

The aim of the game is making the top 4, and from there you make grand finals and win flags. An elimination final here or there? Really, who cares. The problem isn’t that we haven’t “won a final”, the problem is we’re sh*t.

Disagree.

Everyone gets pumped up at finals time, and there is nothing like going along, the anthem, the intensity and then having a win.

When the demons finally made the eight and beat the cats in the elimination final in 2018 - I was there and the dees fans were going apeshit. No, they weren't likely to win the flag (indeed they got rodgered by West Coast in the prelim), but it was a great night for the dees.

When the bombers win their next final it will be huge for their fans. And rightly so.

Not really. I’m lucky (?) enough to be old enough to remember when we were a real force and competing for the flag. That was excitement, knowing you were actually in with a shot to win the thing. At no point since has anything compared. I mean even when we’ve made the finals, it didn’t mean anything. We basically scrape into the 5-8 spots but really, it’s mid-table. You know when you come up against a genuine side you’re gonna get beaten. It’s set up for the Top 4 to win it and rightly so.

Even this year... people talk about making the finals and I’m largely just meh... who cares? We’re not gonna win the flag.

Honestly, they’re TV finals. That’s the only reason they’re there. In the scheme of things they don’t matter. That’s what I meant when talking about Richmond. Those years of losing elimination finals. So what? Then they finished all the way down the ladder in 2016. So what? It’s not a set of stepping stones. You need to finish Top 4, they did, and they promptly won it.

And yes, I’m aware of the single outlier that is the 2016 Bulldogs.

I don’t think they’ve ever looked as bad as Richmond 2001-17..at the same time never looked like winning a final maybe aside from capitulating against us in 2014. Played some exciting footy in patches throughout this 16 year patch, where as Richmond were just plain frustrating. Either way far too long for such a big club.
Richmond made the prelim in 2001, was a good side.

Fun fact: from 1983-2012, Richmond made the finals twice. Even Fitzroy and Fremantle made it more times that that, and they didn't exist for half of the time! What's even weirder is in both those years they made the Prelims....

Essendon have still made the finals five times (and qualified a sixth time before getting kicked out), but only one of their finals losses was even close.

File that under ninthmond.

In the same time frame Melbourne, Port, Carlton, Brisbane, Richmond and the two expansion teams have been far worse for longer sustained runs in terms of wins per season and ladder position. Being middling to slightly below average doesn’t get the ridicule of the aforementioned teams who all copped it hard. Essendon still gets regular blockbusters like Anzac Day, Dream Time and a heap of Friday nights and more importantly, regularly wins. Yes they’re false dawns as far as winning premierships or contending but the point is they’ve been slightly below average. Not an embarrassment or a joke. If anything they’re still due to actually do some time for a sustained run in the bottom 4 copping big hidings.

You're not worthy of this glorious record. You've got to own and embrace it.

At least we’ve got that to look forward to

Yep. I doubt Carlton's two EF wins during that time means anything when they won 5 wooden spoons and qualified for only 3 finals series (2009-2011) since 2001, although they also played in 2013 when we were kicked out.

We may rightfully cop some heat for not winning a final with that pathetic record, but they've objectively been a lot worse than us.

I'm more concerned about the fact that we haven't been anywhere near contenders for a top 4 spot rather than the EF drought.

Pfft. This isn't a record the club should care about

The one they should have plastered everywhere is that if we don't win the flag this year, we're officially in our longest run without a flag.
Id like that on a clock that ticks until they win one

5838 days without a final. who cares
But i'd really like to avoid the experience of getting to 3 decades without a flag.

It could be worse. Like 70+ worse

Don't you just love people who take the time and effort to post that they don't care....
