Essendon have just set an new AFL era record

Yep. I doubt Carlton's two EF wins during that time means anything when they won 5 wooden spoons and qualified for only 3 finals series (2009-2011) since 2001, although they also played in 2013 when we were kicked out.

Carlton have no doubt been terrible, but at least they didn't try and use PEDs to get their list up and about. That, combined with the no finals win streak makes Essendon objectively the worst.

Because that's entirely what we're talking about. It's not like Carlton didn't have a scandal during that time either, but that's besides the point.

Let me simplify it for you. They have a worse win-loss record, average finishing position, less finals played and four more wooden spoons during that time. It's not even a debate.

How many times did they bring the game into disrepute and almost get booted out of the competition?

My question to you is, were we statistically better than Carlton? Yes or no?
Why are you ignoring it? Doesn't suit your narrative does it?

As for your commentary, we were never almost booted from the competition. Look at the title of the thread. Look at the OP. Completely irrelevant. Talk about that stuff in the bay.

I hurt because we’re sh*t, and have been for a long time. My point is, winning a few meaningless elimination finals here and there doesn’t change that. Say we won an elimination final one year over the past 15. Who cares? Other clubs have done that and been just as sh*t - and shitter - than us.

The aim of the game is making the top 4, and from there you make grand finals and win flags. An elimination final here or there? Really, who cares. The problem isn’t that we haven’t “won a final”, the problem is we’re sh*t.
Chin up soldier. At least you have won 2nd most grand finals in history (well tied on 15 with collingwood).

When did GFs replace flags in the record keeping?
Seem to have missed a memo....or was it a wallis spreadsheet?

For the new title, id say he's above average.
Not great, not poor. But has held his job for an inordinate amount of time based on his record.

Now, with that said can we close this thread
Its turned into nothing more than a potshotting fest

I don’t think they’ve ever looked as bad as Richmond 2001-17..at the same time never looked like winning a final maybe aside from capitulating against us in 2014. Played some exciting footy in patches throughout this 16 year patch, where as Richmond were just plain frustrating. Either way far too long for such a big club.
Richmond finished 5th in 2013 and 2015, we broke a record in 2014 to recover to make the 8 on the final round of the season. We played some very good footy during that time it was just we couldn’t win a final, however the seeds of success were planted long before 2017.

Incorrect. They won the 3rd most grand finals in history. They are not tied on 15 grand final wins. They won 14 grand finals. So a clear third.

Funny thing is, Essendon would likely have beaten you in 2013 to avoid this shame had they not injected their players with PEDs.

As I recall they were cooked towards the end of that year with injuries and a form slump, and we had the wood over them. I remember being really flat that we had to play the blues who were a bogey side for us.

Fair enough. Funnily enough, if they dont win one by 2021, theyll be drafting kids who were born after their last win😂

That was 2012. Lost quite a bit after a stint of soft tissue injuries, that led to the beginning of the end with dank and robinson being sacked

in 2013 we were tracking for 5th. We barely scraped a 6pt win against the blues and the game.v the tigers played out like a dead rubber
That game was a shamw because both clubs could have been fighting for 5th spot and hosting port.

We were banned and the tigers ended up facing a 9th placed carlton to lose their first final in quite some time
Tell me the footy gods aren't cruel :p

Just checked AFL tables. EFs would have been Rich v Port and Coll v Ess.

We had spanked port by 41 pts away from home so surely would have accounted for the Power.

Oh well, getting beaten by the Blues had to happen for our current ministy to happen.

Plus, no one was beating the hawks that year.
So do you take a finals win or the ground work laid for a 37 year flag drought to break.
Hence why this "record" is nothing more than a troll

A few meaningless Elimination final wins would mean nothing, anything other than a flag is a failure and we have been an abject failure now for two decades. Despite that we still have a more recent Premiership than many clubs which says more about them than us 😛

More denial in this thread than an Egyptian river!

Denial about what?
We are a rabble no doubt about it but winning a final in that period wouldn’t change that. When you sneak into 7th or 8th like we have (with a garbage percentage usually) we are clearly making up the numbers and weren’t a serious threat.
I can honestly say that leading in to those finals losses that I never thought we were favourites or a chance to win any of them.
Im more concerned that we haven’t assembled a list anywhere near being competitive than I am over losing a few finals.
