I don’t think they’ve ever looked as bad as Richmond 2001-17..at the same time never looked like winning a final maybe aside from capitulating against us in 2014. Played some exciting footy in patches throughout this 16 year patch, where as Richmond were just plain frustrating. Either way far too long for such a big club.

For the record to be broken Brisbane (2009) would have to go another 5 years without winning one. Next cab off the rank is St Kilda (2010), Carlton (2013), Port (2014) then Hawthorn, North, Freo (2015).

No team has been as statistically average as Essendon this century. Over an 18 season period following the 2001 GF they averaged 9-10 wins per year and a ladder position of 10th-11th. They've had 13 seasons of 10-14 wins out of 18, yet somehow never any better and rarely a lot worse.

I hurt because we’re shit, and have been for a long time. My point is, winning a few meaningless elimination finals here and there doesn’t change that. Say we won an elimination final one year over the past 15. Who cares? Other clubs have done that and been just as shit - and shitter - than us.

The aim of the game is making the top 4, and from there you make grand finals and win flags. An elimination final here or there? Really, who cares. The problem isn’t that we haven’t “won a final”, the problem is we’re shit.
