In a weird way, McLaren is still hurting Dan Ric's career.

If not for McLaren's incompetence on the pit wall and preferential strategy treatment for Lando, they would likely be 30-40 points closer to Red Bull, almost within striking distance and RB would have had to make a call on Perez sooner.

I’m not sure he’s too worried. I’m sure he wants it to be a car that can win races, but the combination of it being a dream of his and the massive cash will probably be enough to get him through a season.

If it can’t compete it might bring forward his retirement though as I can’t see him putting himself through years of it.

I don't think that's unfair at all. Liam has driven what, 5 races? Tsunoda may not be setting the world on fire but it'd be a bit of a gut punch to be overlooked for someone that's not even racing in the category.

By all accounts there are 3 drivers in the frame for the second Red Bull seat, for the second half of 2024. Yuki isn't one of them...

I don't think Yuki has the mentality to spiral once Max inevitably beats him, which Red Bull clearly agree with.
He's quick but it can unravel pretty quickly for him.

DR knows where he's at, he won't be any worse than Checo and is the most vanilla, safe, Max pleasing bet.
Lawson is pretty chill and I doubt he will be broken like Gasly and Albon were, but is still mostly unproven.

Checo belongs at Centrelink.

I think what makes the most logical sense

Perez out mid-season
Daniel into the main car, given 10 races to see if he can produce better than Sergio
Liam put into the RB, given 10 races to see if he drives like he did last year.

Then at the end of the year
If Daniel proves to be better than Sergio, then give him that seat.
If Daniel fails, and Liam exceeds expectations in the RB, then Liam gets the seat.
If Daniel fails, and Liam underwhelms, then put Perez back in (or go to the external market).
(By all reports, Yuki is not considered an option)

If none of the alternatives prove themselves to be at the level (highliy unlikely that none of them at least match Perez), they might not be left with any choice.

This. It's Ferrari. Loads of drivers still wanted to join even when they were shitboxes.

Knowing Hamilton, though, it would definitely hasten his retirement if they continue being plagued with issues.
