one of my favourites was when we played the brisbane bears in , i think 1992, and daics booted 13 goals.. including the miracle one form the behind post.. those who have seen will know what im talking about...

he was by far my favourite player as a youngster and we will be fortunate to see another player as purely skilled and talented as the great macedonian marvel... what a gun..

What an awesome display that was. It was '91 and I was ten at the time, and I still remember watching that game. I recently bought the dvd on name-a-game to relive. He kicked 13.1, missing a very easy set shot, and he dished off two gimme goals to teammates. Could easily have had 16.0, and he did it all without breaking a sweat.

Also of note were the number of rotations we made that night. A grand total of 2!!! Zero in the first three quarters. It's a different game these days.

Incidentally, we had a fantastic team that year. It was basically the 1990 team with the addition of exciting 18 year olds Paul Williams, Troy Lehmann (who was very handy in 91-92, and immortalised as part of the Buckley trade) and Mark Richardson, who kicked 21 goals in his first 6 games (and then none for three years after that). We had 3 and a half wins after 5 games, then came the inexplicable 6 game losing streak, before winning 9 out of the next ten to climb up into the top 6 by the final round, then a loss to Geelong knocked us back out. We won 3 matches by 100 points or more.

Was at that game at Carrara in 91. Sublime.

1990 qualifying final goal is his one best moment though. The pressure in the final quarter, the build-up to the goal and the finish. Incredible.

Also, his commentary in the 2002 prelim against Adelaide... "Reality...is...true!"

I was sitting in the forward pocket looking at the Millane-Brown-Daicos exchange(right in front of me) which resulted in the reverse checkside Daics goal at VFL park in 1990....I was 15 and its still a treasured moment...

Micks running goal in 94 against the blues...i was behind the goals that day is a treasured one and of course the Port Adelaide win in 02 final after coming off 4 straight losses ...watched it at the old social club rooms at vicki park with 8 mates...got in late stood for the whole game but prob the best time ever at a football match without actually having gone to one..if it mke sense...got drunk ended up tipping tables over by the end of the game...

I was the same for that Daicos goal but I was 10, but still remember it and cherish it as well. Wasn't there for Mick's run but I was right on the fence behind him for Tarrant's big hanger against the Cats at the Telstra Dome... 2003 I think it was... that was special because I was so close I felt like I rode it with him. :D 1000 people did, was very lucky that day.

The one where he finally did win Mark of the Year, although I think the Melbourne mark was better than that and Moorcroft's piece of shit show pony mark put together. :thumbsd:

I should probably save this for a Mark Richardson memories thread but just wanted to add to the trivia. I am pretty sure MR not only had 21 from 6, her kicked 7 in his first game and 6 from his second. Then he had a series of two which in those days was very very bad for a full-forward. How did the Pies not have the dynasty that was envisioned? I think our team improved. We then got Pert and Burns the following year and Sav (if memory serves). Damm! And Paul Hawke!

1991 was a hangover, the years after was derailed as the players were shattered with millanes death

I remember his debut in 1979. We beat St Kilda by 30 goals at Victoria Park. Not really specific instances, but when Daics got the footy anywhere inside 80m, you could just feel the crowd geeing him up to go the big torp. More often than not, he'd pull it off. He was a massive kick of the footy when he let rip.

I met him and had a quick chat outside the MCG about 30 minutes before the start of the 2003 GF. He was as excited as any one of the Collingwood fans there that day.

I still think Matthews was too quick to flick him. He deserved to go out on his own terms to a greater degree.

Cant remember the exact year but one game against Footscray at the Western Oval.. I was a guest of my friend and sat in the Doggies members area. Daics kicked four or five goals but one goal where he left 3 or 4 doggy players bewildered by ducking weaving and swerving ...he had the ball on a string and then kicked a running banana from the boundary , it made me feel like I was at Vic Park for the awes and applause from the doggie camp was amazing... just like the macedonian marvel.

I saw Peter play his first game and came from his local area and had the chance to see and meet him often during his early days at Collingwood.

Easily my greatest Collingwood player... just look at his 1990 goalkicking performance and now compare it with Buddy Franklin to get a grasp of how good Peter was

When it comes to great footballers sometimes people say things like Tasmania has produced some greats... just think for a moment about Preston Reservoir area for Collingwood greats alone.

The Shaws, the Roccas and Daicos... and as a kid I always remember Harry Collier living not far from me... not sure what area he grew up as a kid but most of his playing career my father said was when he lived in Preston.

Barassi went to Preston Tech and my primary school buddy from Bell primary and mate Gary Wilson went on to become a real Champion and Captain of Fitzroy

1991 was a hangover, the years after was derailed as the players were shattered with millanes death

The hangover only lasted 6 weeks from round 6-12. The rest of that year we were even mmore dominant than 1990. I really think that had we snuck into the finals (finished 7th, half a game out) we would have given it a real shake.

As for 1992, well we were bitterly unlucky that year. We finished equal first on wins, but 3rd on percentage, thus finding ourselves in an elimination final against St. Kilda which we lost by a goal. 1991 and 1992 were very real opportunities that we let slip through our hands.

The one handed marks followed by the 60-65m barrels against Fitzroy at Princess Park, Melbourne at Waverley, Richmond at Vic Park & Carlton at Waverley in 1990. The one against the Blues went 65m plus. Then he decides to slot that goal in the drawn Qualifying Final vs the Eagles. To even consider attempting that at such a crucial stage. I still watch that and shake my head. He was the greatest I have seen in my time!

I loved the murmur of anticipation at Vic Park when the crowd could see the ball move towards him, building as he invariably gathered the ball and headed towards goal, to the final roaring crescendo as he slotted through yet another, frequently brilliant goal.

He only needed the ball in his hands a few times in a match to win the game.

For all the comparisons, Didak, Leon, Thomas or whoever you want to mention, has nothing on Daicos.

In my lifetime and in my opinion, only Buckley was better over the length of his career, through maintaining such a consistently elite standard for so long - but Daicos was more brilliant, more exciting and more capable of a singular piece of play that would leave you in awe.

Too many possible answers to this but I will try

1. His most important - 1st goal 1990 GF. What a goal what a moment. More than any other part of that match it was that that settled the team and allowed them to find rythmn. V important to a team who still carried that Colliwobble burden

2 The Best - 1990 Qualifying Final. Most things in footy evolve (apart from set shots for goal it seems). Those types of shots are more common these days than in 1990 as the idea of trying them has been set in players heads and the technique is practiced. In 1990 that shot was an original thought made deep into a finals match with the game hanging. It took a maestro even to conceive the thought.

Add that it was kicked through the air not run along the ground so the arc the ball followed was harder to control and it was a reversed arc so the way he flew the ball through the air was closing the angle to goal not opening it (the way he was hemmed in on the boundary left this as the only way he could kick.It was a Jordon on the buzzer moment if you like). These facts make this the greatest goal ever kicked I think.

3. A moment- If you were at the Coll v Carl final in Waverly in the 80's (cant remember the year) you will recall in the first quarter the high bouncing ball into a pack with Daicos surrounded by a host of Carl players. If you blinked you missed his shimmy, late take of the ball and deft arch of the back. You wouldnt have missed seeing those players clutching thin air wondering where the f_ck Daicos had gone to as he ran into goal. That was poetry, that summed Daicos up.

Re: Favorite Daicos Moment/s

Too many special moments to list but I did get the honor of bumping into him when I was doing a delivery a few years ago. The best thing was he had heard about me and the Daicos Cup games we used to get going between LSD and Nicks @ Vic Park. He asked to be part of the next game and also that his daughter Maddie wanted to play.

I was on cloud 9.

1990 qualifying final goal is his one best moment though. The pressure in the final quarter, the build-up to the goal and the finish. Incredible.

He was instrumental in winning the flag for us that year, that kick had the slightest of chances to go through and yet he somehow manufactured it. As someone already mentioned, his first goal in the Grand Final was the catalyst that really pumped up the crowd and all his team mates ... incredibly amazing moments.

97 goals that year for a forward / midfielder ... 100 would have been a fairy tale. I guess it was anyway.

91 & 92 were unlucky years... :(

Your whole post is wonderful and I agree.

I just want to add that the whole passage of play that led to that Daicos goal in the 90 Qf was the single greatest piece of play that I have ever seen in my life time. It summed up perfectly the greatness of our 1990 team.

If you recall Gavin Brown ran straight at a contested ball with his head over it (as always) and scooped it up with clean hands under immense pressure, the raging bull Millane then runs in and crunches an Eagles player with a perfect bump, this then allows Browny to handpass the ball over to Daicos on the boundary who proceeds to slot through the impossible goal. I swear I nearly wet my pants with joy. Perfection!!!

I was at that game - Carrara.

My all time favourite (excluding goal of the century - to which I had a perfect view directly behind daics, I saw the ball curve threw!) was against Geelong at Waverly, when the ball neally bounced out of bounds and Daicos without even putting his hands on the ball, took a pot shot from the boundary, whilst being pushed over.... straight through! The excitment that used to take over the crowd anytime the ball went to ground in the Daicos pocket is something that no man will ever equal.

Also, after the last game ever at Vic Park, me and my best mate were walking home after the game each carrying a square foot of the hallowed turf and bumped into Daics - he was pissing himself laughing at us, me being dumbfounded could only spit out that the piece of grass I was holding was where Denis Banks landed after taking mark of the year in 1985, but my mate asked Daics to touch the grass he was holding as it was where he kicked goal of the year against Terry Keays - Daics simply touched the grass, pissing himself laughing and said the words "You guys are legends"

What a great man and footballer he is/was.

So many wonderful memories...thanks guys for this thread. Guy was an absolute legend.

Daicos and Buckley are the two best Collingwood players I've ever seen. Chances are they will be the two best that I will ever see. I'm just glad that I got to see both playing at the height of there careers. We should all value these memories, as they are two of the greats who will be talked about for years to come...when we're all old and wrinkly.

I must admit...a part of my heart was torn away when Daicos was forced to retire...I fear it may be a hole that will never be filled.

Though winning a premiership might go a long way to mend it. ;)
