why would we want to recruit a mature ruckman that has failed elsewhere, and not back our 19 year old 209cm behemoth?

I'd rather draft a ruckman than recruit some dud that was delisted.

Because Jolly may be gone at the end of the year, so even if we get through this year with just Jolly and Witts, we need to have a future plan.

Spencer Christopher!, stay tuned
Played for Lalor as a junior, would probably have turned 18 this year... what else is worth knowing?

It was in Spicey's meat hook thread.

The synopsis was;
a) he has congenital heart block which puts his future in great doubt
b) the reported limit of 100 BPM specifically was bullshit and has been discredited by the player himself

His problem is he has a condition called congenital heart block. It's usually something seen in unborn babies or in infancy but can present in later life as it has with Toy. His heart rate would not have been significantly compromised when he was drafted.

However it is inevitable his heart rate will be eventually restricted to less than 100 bpm. The wiring of his heart is damaged and will get worse. The conduction of beats from his atrium (upper heart chamber) to his ventricle (lower heart chamber) is being disrupted and eventually his heart rate will be dictated by the ventricles rate alone which at rest runs at about half the atrial rate. For the same reason even when exerting himself the heart will not be able to get its rate up to above 100. When this happens he will need a pacemaker to pace his heart at a reasonable rate and AFL footy will be out

What we don't know is how far the problem has progressed and how quickly it is likely to progress from here. it is those questions that the Docs at each club will be trying to answer to know if it's reasonable to recruit Toy.

Always useful to get a second opinion. In any case, it's pretty evident it's a serious issue which has meant clubs see it as a significant risk and have given Toy a berth.

I went for pick 82 so we can get 4 young talent and may as well use that as a PSD pick to land some experienced prospect on the fringe.

This is my first post so I hope I'm doing this right. I expect the Pies will only use 4 draft picks at the national draft. Depending on who the get with these picks will then decide on their direction with the 5th pick. I suspect there is some interest in Currie with pick 39 but some concern that NM may jump at pick 38. If they get Currie they are less likely to want a mature ruckman in the Seaby mould. If they miss Currie I suspect they will either pick Seaby at pick 82 if he is in the draft or select him in the second delisted free agency period on Nov 23-28. If they get Currie I suspect they will have a number of delisted players train with the club and will select from those either in the second delisted free agency period or PSD. I suspect the club is interested in Currie as he performed very well in the SANFL this year (the same as Giles several years ago and look at his output in AFL this year). The club will definately need some strong bodied and ready for AFL back up for ruck as it is not inconcievable that Jolly is injured and Witts either doesn't meet expectations or is also injured. As we saw with Maxwell in the last round - it is very difficult for an undersized non ruckman to compete with the opps main ruckman. With Jolly we aim to win the ruck, with the others we aim to compete and provide our midfield with a chance to shark theirs.
