First test of the aussie summer

I'd guess the side will look something like:

Elgar (c)
Erwee
van der Dussen
Bavuma
Zondo
Klaasen
Verreyne (+)
Maharaj
Nortje
Rabada
Ngidi

With Jansen probably the next quick in line.
Klaasen is the backup keeper right? Would think they'd have Jansen in for him (at 7). From memory that's what they went with in home tests.

Jansen is at least Starc tier with the bat (Test avg 22/FC avg of 23 on South African decks), and their strength is so overwhelmingly in their bowling squad that they may as well lean into it.

They'll play Jansen and bat him at 6 or 7 if their recent Tests are anything to go by and go in with a 5 man attack. The Keegan Petersen injury makes an already weak batting line up even weaker.
Yeah Petersen out is a shame, was keen to see how he fared in Australian conditions. Looked the real deal in the India test series.

Handscomb still wouldn't be there for the first test. A few runs at the Junction doesn't change that they have already been brainless picking Harris off the Junction rubbish, utterly no shock the bloke got nothing last match! Swepson for me is a no for me, I was far from impressed with him in the matches he played, so much poor bowling, might actually go Murphy as he is the most like for like with Lyon. Tanveer Sangha looks the one but he's injured at the moment. Patterson would depend on fitness bloke can't stay fit.

I think Handscomb could come into calculations for the subcontinent tours possibly. Same with Swepson. Matthew Kuhnenmann is one id include as backup if he’s fit.

Patterson at 5 is a shout but as you said has injury concerns. Would Whiteman be worth a shout. Has reinvented himself opening since giving up the gloves.

First test I’d go.
1. Warner
2. Khawaja
3. Laubschange
4. Smith
5. Head
6. Green
7. Carey
8. Starc
9. Cummins
10. Lyon
11. Hazlewood

The Petersen Markram partnership was the most aesthetically pleasing partnership in World cricket so from a purely selfish pov its a shame one is injured and the other has been dropped. Not that Markram didn't deserve to be dropped but it's not like the options to replace him are banging the door down.

Jeez that would be a long tail. Surely someone like Patrick Botha, Tian Koekemoer or Corbin Bosch is worth a shot?

South African XI
1. Dean Elgar
2. Sareel Erwee
3. Rassie Van Der Dussen
4. Heinrich Klassen
5. Temba Bavuma
6. Kyle Verrynne
7. Marco Jansen
8. Keshav Maharaj
9. Kasigo Rabada
10. Anrich Nortje
11. Lungi Ngidi

Possibly for the Indian tour although only in a horses for courses selection.

Whiteman for sure is a shout as a pure bat although he's been opening domestically. He's always been a very good batsman shame he gave up the gloves he'd have played 20 tests by now.

Surely Jansen isn't a number 7? Doesn't Verryenne bowl a bit too? The tail starts at eight so it's a risk to have a young fast bowler at 7 when the batting is so immensely weak as it is.

They have tended to play 4 quicks lately, it's sort of their best chance keep the scores low, and back their strongest suit- bowling

west indies without holder and where's cornwall :)

south africa missing petersen

no world class batsman in either touring side.

bowling seems to be both west indies and south africa's strengths here.

chase seems to be west indies only real spin option.

Holder was in the squad named by windies cricket below and I can't find anything to say he's been removed?

Get some juice in these wickets this summer and it'll be fun to watch. That's a pretty formidable trio of pace attacks.
You'd think the forecast wet summer might make for a bowler's series against the South Africans. Both side's best bowling looks a lot better than their batting.

If Australia just ruthlessly want to pitch doctor to win a series they should make the pitches as flat as possible and back South Africa and West Indies bats in to still suck against Australia's attack.

I'm not saying that's what I want to see nor do I think that's what they'll do, it's just the tactic I would use if that was a thing.

Agreed but SA are probably good enough with the ball to overcome that and close the gap a bit. Australia should just back it’s batting in whatever the conditions.

Against the West Indies I’d agree.

I think with juice in the wickets we are every bit as dangerous but obviously we aren’t equipped to make runs on it.

Curious to see how the likes of Bonner, Da Silva, Mayers and possibly Chanderpaul go.

Brathwaite has made runs here before I’m hopeful he can do it again.
